How Pixar's Movement Animation Became So Realistic | Movies Insider

Pixar gets its characters to move and emote by building them rigs and filling them with controls that allow animators to give them unique expressions and movements. "Toy Story 2" gave them the ability to adapt and reuse rigs for multiple characters, allowing a wide array of characters of all shapes and sizes. In "Finding Nemo," animators learned how to make fish show emotions despite their lack of eyebrows. Major breakthroughs occurred during "The Incredibles," in which animators now had the capability to give humans muscles and skin that moved like the real thing, eventually allowing "Ratatouille" to stretch the human mouth far and control a character's loose movements. Meanwhile in "Cars," a new technology called ground locking let cars drive on a straight path, while new stretchy rigs were created for realistic octopus tentacles in "Finding Dory" and an especially dynamic dog tongue in "Coco." Thanks to new features, like the ability to add tendons onto hands and a digital piano that played by itself, Pixar was able to show complex piano playing. None of it would have been possible without the animation and rigging breakthroughs that came before it.

Pixar: We are not trying to make things look super realistic, we want the emotions that the characters portray to feel real. Disney: These lions look super real. Shame about the lack of emotions though.

We are confusing Walt Disney Pictures with Walt Disney Animation Studios. WDAS certainly didn't make the "live-action" Lion King. There are not only Pixar and a generic "Disney".

As an animation student I feel so happy reading these comments and seeing people really appreciate the amount of hard work and dedication that is required of our career. A lot of times people look down on us and belittle us for choosing this career even though we work really hard to give people a few minutes of joy from what we create. I’m really glad people in this comment session are not belittling us but recognizing our efforts. Thank you ❤️

Heck yes! Let this get general knowledge, please. I'm sick of people thinking, 3D animation is done by simply motion capturing people or that the computer generates the animation :_:::::::: Awful. Animators- and of course Riggers (which is definitely not the same) are so underappreciated in regards to movie success.

We were lucky enough in my college to have one of the key animators for the octopus on Finding Dory come to my class and give us a presentation on it. He literally had one job, and it was just the tentacles. He said they were the hardest thing he'd ever worked on, but the result was groundbreaking. It was such a cool lecture 🐙

You do this because at any time someone may want to tweak the 3d camera for a slightly different shot composition. A few degrees difference could mean seeing all of those things not animated. May as well give yourself a tolerance and animate things not meant to be seen at the edges just in case.

This was supposed to be an educational video, but ended up being one of the most inspirational videos I've seen recently. I love how they made use of the tools from the previous animation. It's as if all of the people who went through Pixar over the 26 year period are working together in harmony, real time. No wonder you can't find a single animated movie that ever flopped of underwhelming from Pixar. Thanks to Insider for the amazing video!

Most amateur filmmakers wouldn't bother spending more time to do their homework and put in 110% like Pixar does. Pixar only hires perfectionists who put heart into every frame. That is why I have so much respect towards them.

As someone working on Animation movies, I appreciate this a lot. I only ever animated and rigged inanimate objects but character animators are the real artists to me. They can make the most boring scene hilarious and the most epic one fall flat. I'm usually in the compositing department, so I make the end result prettier but that rarely can make or break a scene. Good animators and the engineers that support them (and of course often both in one person) deserve a lot of recognition.

@Cat masters, instead of trying to make everything perfect, it's better to start simple and do what you need right now, otherwise you'd never finish anything. Wonder why the first movie was about toys. Then the next movie was about insects. It's easier to design and animate toys. They're the basis or foundation for other iterations. It seems Pixar was following principles like KISS, YAGNI, DRY, continuous delivery, etc. Instead of trying something very complex at the beginning, start simple and add layers gradually. Next time, reuse what you did and improve it. That's "progress, not perfection". Check the video again and compare it with what I said.

I love the last line: this isn't about trying to make it look Real, it's about trying to convey the emotion. That's why animated characters will continue to have great big eyes and sometimes exaggerated brows and mouths. The goal isn't a deepfake, the goal is storytelling, and animation is a masterclass of Show, don't Tell.

They have an incredible render program! I started using it in uni and still do with my projects now and I'm always finding new ways to make something look just slightly more realistic or make the light refract in something seem more 'glowy'. Like how I remember seeing something about cars and how they had to come up with new ways just to get things like dust or scratches on the cars to look realistic.

As a 3D artist myself, I'm sooooooooo thankful for all the advancements that have come before. Now with things like cloth, fire and fluid simulations, they have plugins you can get that make things look pretty good to start with. Also thank goodness for Houdini for simulations and plenty of other awesome things! 3DS max is my weapon of choice for modeling though. It's still can be pretty complicated and I know people who still create new tools as solutions to problems they face but there are so many more options nowadays for both animation and modeling.

I just rewatched the Toy Story series, and the differences are jaw-dropping. Toy Story (1995) is still a great film, because it's built on a solid story and characters in which you feel invested. But the human characters, especially the kids, look just as stiff as the toys. The facial expressions are creepy. By the second movie (1999) they could give the human antagonist a lot of screen time, and it looked just fine. By Toy Story 3 (2010) the teenage Andy had a fully expressive face, and could pull off complex emotions. With Inside Out and Soul, you can completely suspend your disbelief and see the characters as real people. Nobody beats Pixar at this.

It definitely might be. No one has mentioned it here, but the hand-rigged animations not only look more expressive and magical aesthetically, but to grab awards for animation, one can't use real-time motion-capture, only study movement (and they specifically document the process.) Some trivia: "After Cars (2006) lost out on the Oscar for Best Animated Movie to Happy Feet (2006), which utilized motion capture, Pixar placed a "Quality Assurance Guarantee" at the end of their next movie Ratatouille (2007) to remind the Academy they animate every single frame of their movies manually".

Animation is underrated as a medium, period. Absurdly it's still considered a lesser area in visual mediums, with live action having no trouble being taken seriously as true art, while animation, which needs just as much talent and intense work as acting or directing real actors, gets mostly ignored by critics. The work people involved in quality animation do is insane. They control emotion, the external environment, the intensity of the scene - to the nanometre. Everyone involved in this kind of work needs more love.

@Asiel Starlit at least u know what an animator is. But 90% of ppl who watch pixar, Disney or any kind of animation have no idea what rigging, vfx, lightning, rendering so on so on means. I don't even think they don't get "recognition", its just the animation film industry is so complex for an outsider it's hard to understand what goes on to creat a movie, and what kind of ppl work on it.
