▶️Introduction
Plug valves obtain their name from the type of valve disc used. Plug valves are ¼ turn valves and are suitable for stopping and starting flow. Plug valves are not suitable for throttling/regulating flow although there is a diamond port design that is suitable for throttling applications.
Plug valves are available in lubricated or non-lubricated designs.
Operation
The plug of the valve has a hole drilled through the middle, or a rectangular shape bored through the middle. When the bored hole is in line with the valve body and connected piping, the valve is in the open position. When the bored hole is perpendicular with the valve body, the valve is in the closed position. The handle (actuator) indicates the position of the valve (in-line = open, perpendicular = closed).
Advantages
The plug valve is well suited for multiport applications. Three way valves are often of the plug valve design.
The pressure drop through the full bore plug valve is very low, but the rectangular hole plug valve is slightly higher as only 70% of the piping cross sectional area passes through the valve.
The plug valve is fast acting (all ¼ turn valves are).
Disadvantages
The plug valve is poorly suited to throttling applications.
The plug valve seat is often constructed from plastic or polymer materials, this makes the valve ill suited to high temperature applications.
