I love collecting random pokemon sets within sets. My Favorite Pokemon is Poliwrath So I decided to collect 1st Edition Base Poliwrath in Every Language. I finally have it complete. It might be hard to sell as a set in the future but I collected it because I loved it and enjoyed the hunt.

Wizards is definitely trying to appeal more to collectors these days with things like Secret Lairs, alternate art, and IP crossovers, but they'll still struggle to get the wide appeal and product range of Pokémon.

They're trying to force it instead of having a bunch of things with little advertisement and is truly aimed at rich fans. Pokemon has some fairly high class jewelery on the pokemon center website.

The one market for magic with collecting is the older scene who play vintage and the "collection" can at least be played still. I Collect foils of my favorite vintage and legacy and modern cards I use. Thats what i enjoy. I also have all the power and a set of duals that wont go anywhere until its time to go. Pokemon is sports cards for the most part. Cant use them outside the ultra modern so the vintage and ex era stuff are art pieces and thats what many love. The history of the game and franchise is what drives pokemon. Kids growing up having kids of their own who also enjoy pokemon is amazing. parent and child can enjoy the same thing and speak the same language. That aspect of the game is amazing.

Thanks for the vid, Scott! Big Togepi fan here, but also I hope to one day have every pokemon card with a beach type background. I have since been noticing there are so many, it keeps it exciting to discover new ones and add them to my collection one by one! Enjoy your day everyone!

As someone who has been a D&D lover for years, I can assure you that WOTC and their current corporate talent would have F’d this up regardless of Hasbro’s influence. WOTC is detached from reality and as a result they do nothing but self sabotage. Pokemon listen’s to the customers because they realized that’s the key to long term profit and success decades ago.

When you talk about the ips i really think it comes down to one came from a game / collectable / play with em all concept while the other just started off as a card game to be played and the collectability aspect came later.. Magic is indeed very linear, while pokemon always had a lot of branch off points right out of the gate and has only grown bigger and bigger in all avenues as the years have gone on.

This is an interesting video, and I do agree with your statement. I think the most important thing to think about is where each IP started. Magic was initially created as a game and the engine of the game was and is the most important part. Pokemon was created also as a game but as an anime, a video game, a card game, etc. I feel Pokémon started with more roots so it was easier to continue to branch out and sell and market other things beyond the cards or video games. In addition to that, Pokémon are cute and easily marketable to people of all ages, which greatly expands your audience. All things I'm sure Nintendo was aware of when developing the idea. Magic, like I said, was designed for the game play and strategy. Richard Garfield cared so much about creating an intricate, challenging, rewarding, and rich play experience. This naturally lends itself to a smaller market as most people who would play the game or be involved have to learn this new complex rules system. Not only that but the artwork and feel is so similar to DnD that I think most people at the time were maybe hesitant to start playing because of the stigma and view of that sort of game at the time. To give a little bit of information since I'm a big Magic guy, there ARE figures, plushes, board games, etc. of Magic characters actually. I'm talking Funko Pops, plushes of this popular homunculus character Fblthp, and some realistic figures of some prominent characters like Jace and Chandra. I think that people tend to not buy those because either the game itself is far more interesting than these figures or the game unfortunately requires lots of money for the cards if you want to play your favorite formats (sanctioned). Anyway, that's my two cents on this after getting recommended your video on my homepage. Thanks for a small lesson on the history of WOTC, Pokémon, and Magic.

I have kids, so I've bought a few of the classic hasbro board games and such in the last few years (learned my lesson by now though). They purposefully use the cheapest materials and know that kids will destroy it easily so it only lasts a few months and then you have to buy it over again one day. It's like their entire business model is milking IP and putting in the least amount of effort possible to do so.

I loved collecting the great looking arts on mtg cards in 2000. I'm a collector and I would've loved if magic focused on specific people/creatures/monsters and created more lore around that. Big fan of the art styles of some secret lairs though so I'm glad they're branching out that way.

Magic does have some historical branching out of media (i.e. comic books, action figures, novels, etc) and is now doing the Universes Beyond stuff with Lord of the Rings, Transformers, My Little Pony, Godzilla, etc. And I think going forward they're trying to make an animated planeswalker series that might even be on Netflix? So I think it's getting to a point where they can branch out more and popularize some of the bigger characters in the IP (like Jace). I went to a MagicCon recently and youd be surprised at the type of merch they had. Can't compete at all with Pokemon overall obviously, and not saying some of this stuff is even "good" (bc it's def part of Hasbro milking the IP), but I think there finally will be more things for Magic to fall back on soon, if not already.

The number of collector's in magic is a statistical error. It's only players and investors. If there was a significant number of collectors, Magic 30 would have done well.

It's hard to do mtg merch when 99.9% of the people on earth can't name a single character from mtg. Pokemon, YGO, Hearthstone, so many more people can name characters from those franchises. No one knows who Urza is. No one cares who Gerrard is. No one knows Nicol Bolas or any other characters from the storyline. Put a picture of pikachu, yugi, or sylvanus in front of someone and they would likely get at least one of them correct. But no one's going to recognize Chandra. When big box stores carry merch, they don't stock obscure crap. It's all Rick and Morties, Spongebobs, and Nintendo games. No store, outside of a dedicated hobby shop, is going to carry merch for mtg that isn't cards or funko pops. If you try to make money off the core mtg fanbase with merch, then you're diverting resources away from your main product line and the margins on cotton and ink are not nearly as good as literal paper. Why would you spend time monogramming tshirts and leather wallets when you can just continue to print money? They do not have recognizeable characters, which physical stores desire, and they don't have the drive to put money and time into something that makes them less money. And why would you make mtg merch when you can continue to pump out DnD regalia? You'd be tapping into the market of fans that want to wear their colors proudly. But you're also taking money from their wallets that could be spent buying more magic cards. Which have a much better yield for you. I would love quality, official MTG merch but wotc does not have the talent nor the ambition to create anything of worth. For example, take the Jace sneakers. It's a hilariously stupid product. Do you see pokemon shoes made for adults? Quality Control would also be a huge concern. Your foil shirts would begin to warp and bend inside your closet. The print would get faded and worn after just a few washings. The sleeves would split. Maybe if they get their heads out of their asses, they could create merch. But that is yet to have been seen.

I’ve been buying beta cards because they are so affordable. Do you think they are undervalued?
@purpleporygon
Жыл бұрын
I've been involved in both Magic and Pokemon since 2001, and my opinion is that beta cards are properly valued. The players that want those old Magic cards have had over 20 years to acquire them, and although there are new collectors, the popularity of Magic has remained relatively stable compared to Pokemon which boomed over a two-year period. As Scott said in this video, collectors in Magic are much different than Pokemon, especially when it comes to condition rarity and wanting perfect cards. People will pay $5 or 10k for a PSA 10 WoTC card and only a few hundred for a 9. Many Magic players laugh watching how careful Pokemon guys and gals are with their cards because they actually play with them. You can watch Rudy from Alpha Investments toss a $700 Basalt Monolith onto his table without a Toploader or sleeve and no one bats an eye about it. If you threw a $700 mint Shining Mewtwo onto a table without a sleeve the universe would explode. Hope this helped!

@@purpleporygon thanks for the reply! I’ve wondered if beta is the shadowless of MTG. I’m buying many beta cards because the art and coloring is so much nicer on alpha/beta compared to everything released since imo. I can’t afford alpha so thank goodness for beta.
@purpleporygon
Жыл бұрын
@@pikabreww I love beta too! Personally, even if I had an extra $1m in cash lying around I'd still stick to purchasing beta cards over alpha these days and it's not even close. Even if beta doesn't provide you Apple stock returns (it won't), at least you will have some really cool cards that you will cherish regardless of value. And who knows. Maybe in 10 years Hasbro has corrected their course and starts running like a proper company again without green dollars signs in their eyes. I see a few more dark years of Magic before Hasbro get their crap together. Yet Magic has such a rich and deep history that no other TCG has or will likely ever obtain in our lifetimes.
