great advice and can carry over to so many different creative fields and disciplines outside of photography.

Grizzled 67yo here; 42 in the commercial photography trenches. STILL. To me, Social Media is a joke!; it's a popularity contest....only, tied to tenuous algorithms. Instagram is a mobile "I LOVE Me" portfolio page! FWIW: I still derive ALL my (advertising/corporate) work the old fashioned way....by mailers, industry gatherings, cold calls, outside marketing services/artists reps, and prior printed work. I'm lucky in that I'm a "generalist" in subject matter, NOT following what everyone else did....specializing; I also stayed in a big city....with a huge corporate client base.

Thanks loads for that insight, super valuable 42 years must’ve gathered some massive experience. You’re definitely right about social media, it’s a great portfolio if your work is happening on social media but a lot of people forget there’s a whole world outside of it where the majority of conversations happen.

I've made an entire niche put of not specializing in one or two narrow fields. The niche I fill is being a photographer who can do anything anywhere on little or no notice. The only thing I won't shoot is a wedding. One of the advantages of not specializing in narrow fields is that a narrow niche can limit you to an equally narrow geographic region where the market is saturated with photographers in any narrow niche. A New York photographer usually won't travel too far to do a shoot unless it's to another urban area. If someone wants an industrial shoot in a remote or underserviced area, I can do it, or any other niche I am capable of doing.

Thoughts on multiple genres of photography. Is it worth having 3 different identities? Or best to try and funnel everything back to 1?

It's totally fine to do whatever works for you, but I would avoid creating extra work that isn't being a photographer (if you want to be a photographer)

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I find them very interesting. Social media and my web pages have yet to give me work as a professional photographer. Instead, I came up with the idea of sending pictures to popular magazines where I live-so I started sending material to the local publications utterly free of charge. But only when National Geographic published me did my career jump forward. I have worked non-stop as a professional photographer for four years without breaks. I immediately became known as a National Geographic photographer, although in my case, it was only a matter of one published photo.

I totally agree with a lot that you've said. However to make ends meet as a photographer in a niche that has a lot of competition, wouldn't you suggest specialising in multiple areas? I enjoy the variety of photographing multiple genres of photography and to focus on one area would reduce my income or encourage a lot more travel.

Totally, I photograph a very varied number of things. The point is, if you have a very varied portfolio the client will often go with the specialised photographer that does exactly what they want. But yes, totally take any job you need but it doesn't have to represent you. Most of what I do doesn't make it to my website.

Would you then suggest to create multiple websites for different genres that you specialise in? @@ItsJonnyKeeley

Do you use different specific websites and socials for different niches Jonny? Or just have one ‘main niche’ and everything else is just work that you don’t really share/publicise?
@ItsJonnyKeeley

@@philyoung51 It's probably easier to say that I'm known for different things in different places. But simply I do have different social medias and websites but I wouldn't recoemnd spreading yourself too thin.
