Since we're here talking about radio persons shaping the future, I'd like to see a video about Disco Demolition Night where ex-radio host Steve Dahl , in a fit of racist rage campaigned as a protest for rock-n-roll airplay, had thousands of his fans burning black artist records, effectively driving disco into the ground, which laid the foundation for chicago house and juke music that pioneered the EDM of today.

I don't think Steve Smith was doing it with racist intentions, I think he did it because he was angry that classic rock was no longer getting the attention that It once got. Don't be taken in by this "fight the power" bit. People are looking back at this with rose-tinted glasses. Simon Cowell loved every second of this given that the RATM was released on the same parent label as his X-Factor winners. He played everyone like a fiddle to get double the sales for half the effort. The X-Factor winner didn't sell any less copies because of the competition. In fact they sold more than usual. And then he played everyone again by making out that Susan Boyle was some big surprise thing. And every single one of you was taken in by it.

Hard to believe since RATM is with epic records & revelation records. There’s a great irony in telling people to buy a song that has the lyrics “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” in it. Maybe the could release an updated version with the lyrics “fuck you I might do what you tell me” in it. ;)

Rage Against the Machine is NOT corporate media-approved music. That's just one more reason to support this band and their endeavors.

Do they know its Christmas is such a white savior song. Yes, they know. There are more Christians in Africa than any other continent. And of course there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time. Part of it is equatorial and never snows and part of it is in the Southern Hemisphere so its summer at Christmas. No snow. That's just dumb.

I remember that RATM reading list on the primordial internet. I thought it was really cool that they seemed just as real off the stage as on. Never sought out any of the titles, though I see I read some of them (you can still look up the reading list), like The Lorax and Sartre.

The ability of sales charts to produce this kind of unintuitive result is endlessly fascinating, to me at least. (As is how they're struggling to adapt to a streaming era with various algorithms of how to equate a play with a sale)

Yes! Also, I read Walden and Miles in college, both excellent books, and I'm glad that you shouted out both of them in this video. Let's hope RATM does a full tour through the US and Canada for 2020.

I never listened to Rage Against The Machine. May do so. Been looking for bands in the 90s. Usually listen to rock music from late 60s and early 70s.

They’re well worth listening to. A bunch of extremely intelligent and well read guys that used their platform to speak out about things they really believed in. In some ways they’re the worthy descendants of the political folk acts of the 60s.

Rage, Alice In Chains, STP, Soundgarden, you can go crazy man. Also just after the 90s, the first Audioslave album is a masterpiece.

Glad someone finally told this story in short form. Every time I've told it it's piqued someone's interest but I had to tell them the full official doc was removed here. This is really one of the coolest things that's happened in modern music

great video but i never clicked away so fast as when you told people to check out RATM's leftist reading list using a corperation that embodies capitalism (yes i know you needed to shout your sponsor but i wish you didnt segway it like that LMAO) anyway heres the reading list on reddit for anyone who wants it www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/dg33k/rage_against_the_machines_reading_list/
