Here's the thing of kicking a banana tree. One, most people would do it on a dead or a dry banana tree. Two, because of how the banana trees are structured the more you kick it the more loose it becomes making it easier to kick and kick. It's one of those marital arts gimmick which looks more impressive than it actually is. I'm from Myanmar and dry banana trees aren't that sturdy. A kid can basically rip it apart with their hands. It's not like you're kicking an oak or a yew tree, which would be a completely different story entirely.

You know I had a trainer who was also a bit obsessed with lowkicks & training them hard, taking full power kicks on your legs as to "strenghten" them. But I heard later on that actually what happens is you don't just make them stronger against punishment but just the nerves I believe around there die off, why you will feel less pain or none if you get kicked in those places. Seems obviously not the way to do it, lol.

I think the "tapping" kicks are because his background is karate. In karate even when we kick hard and through the target, we tend to always return the kick through its launching trajectory. From what I've seen in kickboxing and muai-tai, the kicks go completely through the target and the recovery is just by lowering the leg and finding your footing for your stance. He would be doing it right if he was preparing for karate, but not for muai-tai.

100% true. I don't do any form of fighting, but I play badminton (only on regional competitions and tournaments, but still...) and can absolutely confirm that dancing is indeed perfect for cardio and coordination. It's ideal for learning to move fluidly and be quick on your feet (while at the same time be as efficient as possible in terms of energy usage). In terms of cardio, it's one of the most flexible ways to train that, because it's easy to adapt to a specific training regime and build up from there. Van Damme actually used to dance ballet when he was young. If you know the training regime of those dancers, you know how intense and demanding that kind of training is. It's insane.

Kick me if I'm wrong. But Van Damme, Chuck Norris and Cynthia Rothrock trained kicking in the same school in Korea; Moo Duk Kwan (one of the nine kwans that merged into Taekwondo. It's often refereed to as traditional Taekwondo or Tang Soo Do.) Confusingly the movie stars portray characters of kickboxning, muay thai, karate, kung fu or ninjas; but in actuality they use Taekwondo kicks. That's why he chambers his foot that much and use a straighter trajectory, and also explains the jumping spinning kicks.

This is a guy who actually trained at Chuck Norris's house for a year and held pads for him etc. He damn sure held the pads correctly then. Alexio is a legend and I'm pretty sure he would have corrected him. One thing people gotta remember is that these films were made by an INSANE film company called CANNON. Van Damme was stuck in a 3 film contract with them and it was just a crazy time. So to have any bit of realism in them at all is an achievement.

I think it's by pure default that Van Damme isn't considered "a real kickboxer." Kickboxing was in its infancy in the West when he was fighting Full Contact Karate.(18-1, 18 knockouts) The two sports were nearly indistinguishable from each other because rule sets hadn't been solidified for either.

I think it's because he stopped fighting competitively to focus on acting. He gained a lot more fame and money via that route, but he's not considered an elite competition fighter. Dennis Alexio, who played his brother in the film Kickboxer was a legitimate kickboxing World champion at the time. So the infrastructure was available back then if Van Damme had really wanted to focus on being a professional kickboxer. He just didn't choose that option.

Thank you for your great content, Gabe! About banana trees: Kicking these trees is actually not what most people think. The banana tree is not a true tree, but rather a large plant (it is technically an herb, as trees have hard, wood trunks). I thought of the jumping side kick that George St. Pierre landed perfectly on Matt Hughes’s mid section; it was devastating. It made me wonder if (especially at top level competition) your opponent wouldn’t even expect something like that; making such techniques even more useful. Since people rarely train them because of the lower chances of them landing, they might also never expect them; making them much more effective than anticipated. It’s just something that came to mind when you mentioned it. Btw, thanks for the great content.

Very fun movie, I loved the old wise coach, but it got surprisingly dark at the end with what Jean Clauds opponent did. I was also dissappointed that with all the training, the final fight is finished off by the guy just standing there and taking Van Dammes punches like a sandbag

Yeah all the training was really cool, but the final fight has rather poor choreography. In fact, Van Damme's training choreography was better than the actual final fight choreography!

So are you saying that professional kick boxers and Thai boxers etc don’t hit anything more than the heavy bag and Thai pads to condition the shins?

I must have seen this movie like 10 times when I was a kid. I loved it ... Seeing it again now and how ridiculous it is makes me regret wasting the time on it.. but then again it got me into martial arts so maybe it was not all wasted.

I've seen Buakaw kick down a tree on video, so obviously Kickboxer is a 100% real documentary, and Frank Dukes is a 100% real fighter.

Man, when Gabriel shares I always learn something - even when referencing Van Damme! Today I learned how to hold Thai pads correctly. Thank you Gabriel.

Maybe holding the pads this way was because they wanted to show how much burst and power had alexio's kicks...the story about the run with the piece of meet and the dog actually was reall ...when he was back in belgium his trainer claude goetz....did that...in real to him.

The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. John 1:1,14 KJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. [14] And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, 1 John 3:8 KJV He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT. John 3:18 KJV He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The way Van Damme holds the pads : he used to be a spar for years for Chuck Norris. If he holds the pads this way, it's probably because he's able to absorb the impact. About leg conditioning : how many years do you think they try in Muay Thai and Muay Boran to get this level ? kzitem.infoKsVK9ewKWqo What you qualify of "Karate style", or even "from Taichi" and "from Muay Thai" is incorrect. Everything is already contained in real Karate, I mean the Okinawan Karate. It contains boxing moves, joint locks, throws, ground work, and so on.

just saying - the video where you mention the most fault people make, like in not turning the other shoulder back (and with doing so) turning the upperbody kinda, helped me a lot. thx a lot. (doing just training (for fitness), but I feel I'm quite much faster than with more power)

We're all aware that Van Damme is not a kickboxer, but an acrobat... but yeah, showing off to 15-year-olds is fine.

What is the deal with Van Damme's kicks? I know he wasn't a pro fighter and his movement isn't best for sport fighting but even after seeing years of pro fighting and other martial artists his kicks have a unique look, like he has extra hip dexterity or something? It's like a combination of a Karate style and modern dancer. I've never seen anyone emulate his exact style but I can't tell why it's so unique?

You do realise this is a fictitious movie? it's made for entertainment purposes and not meant to be taken literally? there will be elements that that re far-fetched and elements that fit in with real to life training.

Idc how realistic it is…there’s nothing like a kick ass action movie from the 80s-90s. Perfect way to spend a night off.

Bar fights is the funnest way to get in jail. Its really bare knuckles full contact, muay thai uses gloves. Real bare knuckle fighters target the body cos they dont want to break their hands against a skull

Kicking a banana tree? What are you bananas? Your bone and flesh is no match for a tree. your bone will cave in from the first kick for starters. Just imagine the nerve damage.

NEVER USE STRETCHING MACHINES OR WEIGHTS FOR HIP FLEXIBILITY, They are a great way to cause permanent damage to the hip joint. The end range of hip movement is determined by hip geometry, not muscle or tendon strength or flexibility. This end point varies between individuals, but it is a hard limit for everyone. If you push past this point all "gains" are due to damage to the cartilage of the hip.
