Unless you are willing to work on your own car or have a good private mechanic, you're going to be paying a heavy bill at the stealerships. Outside of the very basic maintenance package included in the new car, you're then responsible for covering run flats, $100 wipers, $400 battery, $2k brakes and $150 oil changes. That's just the basics. Throw in control arms, dampers and the costs quickly add up. People aren't ready to cover repair and maintenance often because it isn't factored into the purchase decision and blame the automaker. They are delivering on their promises of the ultimate driving experience, and not the most economical transportation. It's not a Toyota Corolla.

A car will last as long as you take care of it. I’m so tired of the BS about driving it so much it’s a machine that’s what they are made to do. My friend has a Mercedes Benz for a little over 6 years and it has never been in the shop and it’s his daily driver. Why? It’s because he takes care of it. It’s that simple. Take care of your car and it will take care of you. Just like your body or health eat healthy and exercise and you won’t have major health issues as you get older.

After owning three BMW sedans over the last 15 years. Question is easy to answer. BMWs before 30,000 miles and 2 years will be reliable outside of doing normal maintenance. After 30,000 miles (3-5 years) you are rolling dice every time you push that start stop. After 50,000 miles you will need coolant system, spark plugs, numerous oil leakage, electronics (including battery), plastic turbo pipes replaced or looked at. Approaching 80,000 miles if you haven't gotten another car already you should just put triple A tow card and $200 cash in your glove box for eventual breakdowns. Between 70,000 miles and 100,000 miles the suspension and any active steering systems will need replacing. Above 100,000 plastics inside the engine and cabin will start disintegrating and deep persisting engine issues will be permanent. Your once $100,000 after 10 years will be ready to be be shipped off to a third world and/or eastern European country to be either a smelly taxi cab or drug mule.
