As a retail manager, i can say i don't have a favourite (never understood picking favourites), and i spend 99 percent of my time on the shop floor helping customers and staff. I say this as just because you have had a couple bad experiences with managers, it does not mean we are all pricks it just creates a bad stereotype that people new to the workforce will carry into a job. I saw thisfirst hand in my first job as there were staff that outright just did not like any manager despite how much time the managers helped out staff where they could all because some people said on the internet retail managers are bad. Sorry, little bit of a rant there, folks.

i just quit my retail job 3 weeks ago, i worked night shifts and i quit without a backup job to go into due to the amount of mental and physical strain i had to endure and let me just say the type of behaviour you described from supervisors and customers is no different over here in the UK. it got to the point where i’d be physically sick regularly, going into work after being awake for 20 straight hours before coming home, throwing up my lunch and crashing in bed before waking up an hour before my shift later that night. take care of yourself people, no job is worth sacrificing your health.
@TAlim_1994

Very true indeed. Health and well-being should always take priority above all else. Unless one wants to literally die of overwork, as is unfortunately a fairly common phenomenon in some mainly Asian countries, to the extent that there are even local words to describe it: it is known as _karoshi_ (過労死) in Japan, _gwarosa_ (과로사) in Korea, and _guolaosi_ (过劳死) in China. Obviously the ideal scenario would be to enjoy one's work, but if that is not possible one should at least aim to limit undue stress from work so that health is not adversely impacted. Particularly, if you find that you are excessively having to use coffee or other artificial methods just to continue to do your job for days at a time, I think that is a good cue to either try to work more reasonable hours or find another job, or potentially suffer fatal consequences.

I have to agree with you. Retail jobs will definitely do a number on your mental health. Spent 19 years in retail being abused by multiple stores and their horrendous customers. Basically being a doormat with a smile. What’s crazy is after a while I did not know how to turn it off. I would be in doormat mode 24/7. And people in my personal life began to treat me like a doormat too. It’s a slippery slope, and you have to be careful not to allow the subservient persona to bleed into your personal life. It’s been 5 years since I left. Though I no longer allow people to wipe their feet all over me, I’m still processing the trauma.

I live In Australia, and it appears that we have a relatively similar model regarding cashiers not sitting at the register. The majority of retail stores I have visited (I have never actually worked in retail myself) do not usually have seats for the cashiers, with the exception of a supermarket chain called Aldi, which does usually have their cashiers sitting. However, it appears that the staff at the cashiers do get rotated fairly regularly, which does reduce the need for seats for individual cashiers, since they will have the opportunity to sit while not on duty.

When you said how managers often are harshest to good honest workers, and even lash out on them over the more lazy ones - that hit hard. Reminds me of how bullies target the weaker kids (I’m not saying good workers are weaker), Or even how emotional abuse can take place in a relationship if a person is too agreeable and the other isn’t. It just shows that some people don’t mature that far beyond some schoolyard mentality.

I can appreciate that sentiment, though I never worked in a warehouse. I think my favorite in-store gig was 'freight manager' at a dollar tree. I did the front end thing for a while and I like to think I was great at it, but it burnt me out severely. At the time, the pay bump to freight was okay and basically all I did was work on receiving trucks with a small handful of people, and work the new stock in the rest of the week. I found ways to keep each of us on the freight team working in the back... each of us would get a day of managing the pallets and prepping boats. Half a shift killed on the truck itself, even if it is moderately hard work. I loved truck day. I'd be back there vaping and tossing boxes in a wifebeater lol. Half of my crew would come in stoned, which was fine by me cause they kept us above pace of the unloader in the truck regardless. And they're stacking the very pallets they'll be working, so it's not like they have any reason to wanna stack em poorly. And they never did. Chemicals was my favorite dept to throw. I could pick up a box with 12 gallons of detergent in it, spin it 180 on my right arm to then grap the top flap frontwise with my left and flip it forward, at which point my right hand comes up and clasps that side and rests it over my bicep, allowing me to quickly get the rest of the box open with my left hand. I would manage all of this while walking and kneeling to the shelf to throw them out lefty, never take the box out of my right hand because I break it down immediately after. Nobody was faster than me at chems. Getting good at stacking and tossing the heavy stuff can be a fun challenge, too. I really enjoyed the physicality of it and made my own fun of it, so the days went quickly. I just like being strong, being in a state where using my body and seeing what it can do feels good. It kept me healthy in an environment that does a lot to chip away at your well-being. The best part is, nobody on the sales floor interrupts truck. Like, on slow days cashiers would offer to help on truck because of how it then keeps them off of the sales floor completely lmao Dang man, there was a point where I talked the store manager into letting us stock on overnights. Our crew was short two people, and being on the floor with customers basically halves the boxes per hour we can do because we have to keep it clear of pallets and u-boats and have to help/work-around customers. Top brass wasn't gonna give us the people, but they could pay the few of us there an extra $2.50/hr to get it done overnight. We were first stop as well, so trucks came before opening, at the end of our overnight. That was an absolute joy. I honestly did love it. Just chillin and listening to music as I work through filling departments and building the next promo displays, or goofing off with the rest of our little tight-knit unit. We were kinda free to just... get it done and do our own work our own way with nobody to bother us. Keep one register open to sell each other snacks and drinks. Easiest management gig ever, staff manages itself and all you do is basic administrative in the morning to prep for opening, and then you fricken leave. You know the main thing I noticed though? In groups of people who work front end and anything else more on the sales floor, the hostility shoots wayy up. I actually had a few different crews across the overnight gig, but things always went the same. We got along like friends would. And by that I mean, the phase where you've been friends for so long that sometimes it's nice to just be around each other, not directly interacting but doing your own thing, nothing more needed from each other. People didn't need to argue. We just kind of understood each other and conversation was easy. It's amazing what not having your social battery ripped through does for crew morale. I tend to think most people have some likeable traits about them that you can form bonds over, but not under duress. In customer service everyone is traumatized and drained, and people forget how to be good to each other. It's incredibly depressing once you spot it, and it becomes very hard to stick around if you can do ANYTHING else. I started with lot clearance - like, housepad prep. Hard fricken labor was more appealing. I had an in with a friend who's dad was in the business, my friend being his front end loader operator. The money I made in a day was wayy better, and you got paid at the end of the day. My body was haggard, but my mind was finally at peace. Out there, everyone was equal and nobody gave a crap about formalities. Do the work like everyone else and all is well, worry for nothing. I'm like you, I can't go back. For a while I was on jobsites, lots of amazing experiences. Ultimately I went the HVAC route and got my refrigerant certs. So now I have all of this building experience, and skills in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. But I can also do drywall repair, painting, floors, so on. So where do I take these skills? A church and school that just so happens to have 37+ problem units and a need for maintenance with those qualifications to tend to them on the spot. They pay me above what I'd make starting as a lead in my field, and the benefits rock. They still have the full old-school package, full spread like it's an 80s career gig. Not to mention, everyone is so genuinely nice there. Kids are the best, they know a million ways to make you smile. It's nice to work around people and not have to pretend to be happy. My work is feast or famine. Sometimes I get to sit in my back room and play elden ring on my itx rig for 3 hours. Other times, I don't sit down for 6. It's the total opposite of retail's repetitious monotony. I have to size up each situation appropriately, many times needing to learn new things! And I mostly act as a free agent. I am the on-site property manager. I call-in bids for jobs, I decide what gets done when and how. Another administrative head coordinates with me on property budget, determines what gets spent, and works with me on getting budget needs across to finance. So he basically handles the BS part. I just buy what I need and get it done, or get someone else on it at the best price and makes sure it's up to our requirements by the end. Retail just has nothing for me in terms of work fulfillment, I don't know how I survived to be a halfway happy person, to be totally honest. 10 years of my life. The one perk I miss is that it was pretty easy to get laid, even find a steady partner. You'll see lotsa people come and go, lots of chances to make a connection with someone. The proximity makes it easier to grow a relationship, to the point where twice I totally skipped the dating phase and wound up in an actual, full-blown relationship. We already spent so much time together, we both just kinda knew we wanted to be together, and nobody else was surprised. I guess one thing that I will say about retail, is it made me much more capable and dynamic in a social sense. I find that even as I go into different work environments, there are situations everyone else struggles to know what to do with, that feel like nothing to me because of my retail experience.

Old comment, as someone who had worked in a warehouse. It's not a bad job, I didn't have to worry about customers, I was able to get certified on 2 machines. What sucks is that if you like socializing you won't do much well at least in the place I work at, so if you're fine not doing much socializing it's okay. The other thing is, it's currently slow at my work so I'm laid off at the moment, it's the third time I've been laid off due to lack of work, may very for other warehouses. Other than that it's not a bad job if you don't mind the physical labour, listening to sound of a loud rollers, if you prefer to work independently, and not wanting to deal with customers.

I worked in a grocery store for 4 months as a bagger when I was 16. I would work after school 4 days a week. my main duties were bagging, facing, pushing carts in, and cleaning the bathrooms at the end of the shift. I was getting $7.50 an hour. After a few months of hard work, I felt unappreciated for never calling out and always doing my work effeciently. I started shoplifting. I would stuff bags into my pockets during my shift, and use them to bag stuff and then walk out the back door to my car after my shift ended. I did this every week. After 4 months I got fired, not for shoplifting, but for walking into an area of the store I wasn’t supposed to. I walked above the stockroom to check out what was up there cause I’ve never been up there before, and it was a computer with the store’s security cameras on it, I came back down and the deli clerk told the manager I was up there. I was fired the next day cause they thought I tampered with the computer. If I wasn’t allowed up there should be a door or signs. But there was neither. I know shoplifting is wrong. I don’t do it anymore after I left that job, I’m now 22 and a mail driver, and make 3 times that.

i made some good friends at work. Its all in how you deal with situations at work, at the end of the day we are not employee's and our titles are just that, words on paper. At the end of the day we are all human beings with a mind body and soul, so when you treat people like you want to be treated, it makes it easy to deal with tense situations at work. And for me i rarely get tense situations because i keep communication a must at work, i always make sure my staff is happy ( in a realistic way ) and i make sure we all have a good time at work, when you have a happy staff the job gets done 100 times faster compared to depressed and mad people. I learned over the years of having idiot bosses that i will never become that and now that i am a supervisor i always try to be as human as possible and try to avoid low IQ scream sessions lol...

I was in the big blue hell for almost 6 years. I have million horror stories I swear. I'll just leave two here for ya. 1. My First day of working frozen products a woman came in and asked me all nice it i could find some vegan chicken patties for her, i tole her id check the freezer, had to move 6 pallets with a manual jack and i came back out and said *I'm sorry ma'am, we don't have any" and she hits me back with "OH HELL NO HONEY YOU AIN'T GONNA LIE TO ME LIKE THAT, MY HUSBAND IS A MANAGER OF A FROZEN DEPARTMENT I KNOW YOU HAVE IT" then i told my manager and he pretty much said he hopes she has good luck with her husband then lol. She cussed at me on my first day (she said more than just that obviously) so that set the mood for how that job was gonna be for years.. 2. After 4 years i finally after practically begging for a promotion got into a department manager role, and i told every supervisor in the building i had a vacation that i needed to keep, even told the store manager and the CO manager too. I come back from my vacation and we have a round table meeting of all the department managers and the CO manager in front of everyone to my face tells me my department looks like s***. I went to the store manager and told him i didn't appreciate gettinf called out like that in front of my peers and his response? I quit retail after nearly 2 years due to mental health reasons. My biggest issue with my particular store was we had shoplifters all day everyday. Largely due to being next to a school, so kids would come in and steal during breaks and after school. It was company policy that we were not allowed to confront thieves or even demand to see in their bag. Having to watch it wore me down. On top of the terrible attitudes of customers. It was shocking sometimes how people would behave.

I can 100% relate with job training sessions that were just a massive waste of time lol For me, my first job was like hospitality job. And the training was like 7 hours of me just sitting in a room watching these old corporate training DVDs from like 20 years ago, about how to treat people with respect. Most of which was literally common sense. It was the most obvious shit ever like "Greet people with a happy expression", or "Make eye contact when you talk to people." just things that are obvious. At the end, I had to take this written test, and not even lying, I didn't even pay attention to most of the training and I still passed no problem. Because again, everything that was covered was basically common sense that everyone already knows. Thankfully, the job wasn't actually that bad. But the training was just a massive waste of time. I didn't need to sit there for 7 hours watching training videos on stuff literally 90% of people already know, because its common sense.

The amount of immaturity and cheapness has really ruined good jobs and good professions. It’s so frustrating dealing with these companies and they do mind games to their employees it’s sad. Thank you for sharing pro, another thing I noticed is the store you worked for did highly illegal things such as not letting you go on your break I’m sorry you went thru this pro.

The whole point of working retail is to eventually leave retail, ive been doing it part time alongside taking classes at college for 2/3 years or so. leaving either when i graduate next semester or start getting paid more for being on the tik tok creator fund. 20 minuets in the video and just by looking at the timestamps i can tell you about 95% of this applies to almost every retail store in america.

Around 11 to 12 years ago, I worked in retail. I had a good boss, and a cool manager whos now my friend. I really didn't like people, there was some regulars I enjoyed chatting and serving, but there is a reason I hated register and preferred to work on the floor. Especially since a lot of people smoked and expected you to automatically know all the brands even when you don't smoke.

@@kellio8087 glad i got out of that place. Most grocery stores just hire the bare minimum of staff to reduce wage costs, and its ruins the business on all fronts. You have to brush customers of or Manager A will yell at you for not getting your work done, but you cant be obvious about that bc then Manager A will also yell at you for being rude. (not to mention they defend rude customers when they complain, which there were a lot) On top of that they just put you with some random 15 year old kid on your first day at work who also doesnt know what they are doing and how to guide new employees (kinda expected), and then they just expect you to know random stuff you never did before (and finish on time with work on the first day, while the load is the same). Its just walking on eggshells the whole time and it gets really depressing. As said before, i had 1 good manager who never yelled but just said he should have done so (from management, he knew it was bs), and when he did show disappointment in your work it was always justified (like being extremely slow or making a mess).
@ArcanePower1

@@kellio8087 they intentionally short staffed their shop to save on wage costs, it was also common pratice among stockers to brush off customers bc otherwise you could not even finish in time (a few customers asking for help could already cause you to not finish on time). Manager would always yell at us for that, (which is understandable if the work wasnt so much) but also yell at us for not finishing on time. Customers were also very rude but luckily i sometimes had customers sticking up for me and 1 even yelled at the manager for defending a rude customer (managers always did that, that was the best moment ngl). Im glad i quit, i do feel sorry for that 1 nice shift manager who has to put up with all this crap, atleast when he got mad it was justified.

This poor kid, retail is a horror story. It’s only gotten worse… I worked entry level retail jobs in the middle 1980’s, and it was horrible then. I think the worst I dealt with in retail/ fast food is when a customer who was trashed off his ass actually picked up the computer monitor to the register (they were pretty large CRT monitors then) and threw it at me….or tried to. That was my last shift. 😳 It’s 10 times worse now🥺

(english is not my first language, so I apologize if there are mistakes) I also work at Winn Dixie and they are doing exactly what you typed. They hire a lot of people and cut our hours. My biggest problem with the store is our manager, because everyone in every department makes the exact same pay ($12.50). Another problem I have is their rewards program, because as a cashier, I despise my shifts more and more every time I have to explain to an eldery person how to put in their phone number, or reward numbers to finish the transaction, (because at least with my store you need to enter a rewards number to finish the transaction). Once again, another problem is that during my breaks they will kick me off my lane to train someone else, and while they train that person they ordered me to help with shopping carts (which I have never done before). All I did was nothing as I did not know how to use the one mechanism to hold multiple carts at once. There are also a lot more problems I want to write, but I've already wrote an entire essay just now. I also plan on quitting this job due to our crappy manager and coworkers that our manager/HR will also defend. Now that I'm done with my essay, I wish you the best of luck at Winn-Dixie (That is if you're there still).

I think everyone should work retail atleast 1 year. I think it'd humble some people. One thing that blew my mind is that the company I worked for chose a near retirement age assistant manager over 4 early 20s workers that could have easily taken over her job. When they did that that's when I knew to leave. Now I make almost 10 more an hour and have great coworkers and supervisors, almost no stress.

I have ASD(Autism spectrum disorder) and ADHD and I'm be honest with you, it's hella difficult to secure any job. I work in the automotive industry because it's my passion I enjoy working on cars. However, I hated the director so much for being a Mr.Nice guy and the rest of the managers because they're assholes being such offensive sex jokes or calling retardation to people. I often got written up because they knew I had these conditions because I told them after I made a simple mistake many times that wasn't a big deal, they did this because I was an easy target to be terminated by reasoning for safety policy violation for a car battery is smoking, we do pictures and video recording for inspection on 3rd party app and I tape it a battery to upload. I wasn't self-aware til afterward when they used that against me while other people would easily get away with it as are bigger than that. If a director ever tries to counsel is the biggest red flag because I remember when he said the line I'll never forget "If you have these conditions then why do you choose to work here" like they're saying people like me are not good at jobs nor I cannot read their minds either, self ashamed, comparing other people that are better than me. I know a guy who has OCD who quit because he's been using him often for company. Believe me, they do not take seriously about your disability as any excuse. I was miserable forced me to sign a termination form and didn't ask me for cash out of my PTO hours (lost $450). Out here still seeking a new job and having a very difficult time I never called back after I submitted 23 applications and 4 interviews while doing DoorDash to financially support myself even though my parent helping me.

I also have adhd and autism and I want to make you some questions. Do you have any problems with reading? Because I can't ever focus and remember things and I want to know if I'm the only one because not a lot of people have adhd and autism at the same time they just have one not two, it's really difficult to find a person with these 2 diseases at the same time. Do you get tired faster? Because I do get tired fast and a lot of people call me lazy when I'm really not. That is why I still don't have a job. Because I know they would get me fired fast. Do you find it difficult to make friends? To me it's difficult to make friends and especially to have a girlfriend(this makes me depressed) Do you have depression? I think life is difficult without any mental problems, is more hard with one mental problem, and it's very difficult to have a life with two mental problems. I'm undiagnosed but I know me very well and I know I have adhd and autism. My family doesn't know the symptoms to those diseases and they say I don't have nothing, they say I don't have autism and that I don't have any mental problems.😢 My life f-ing sucks, it's like I live in a paradox and that I don't have any solution until the day I leave this world. Don't worry I will not take my life because I want to think I can do so much more with it. Last questions : do you take any medication to help a little bit your life? And do people makes you have anxiety or anxious?
