The encounter between King Robert the Bruce and knight Henry de Bohun has echoed in legend through the centuries.
This film explores what really happened during that fatal encounter between the two men by examining the primary source, the Vita Edwardii Secundi (Life of Edward II), written its account within a year of the battle.
Vita: ‘ The Earl of Gloucester and the Earl of Hereford commanded the first line. As they passed by a certain wood and we are approaching Stirling Castle, the Scotts were struggling under the trees as a flight, and a certain knight, Henry de Boun, pursuit them with the Welsh to the entrance of the wood. Before he had in mind that if he found Robert Bruce there he would either kill him or carry him off captive. But when he had come thither, Robert himself came suddenly out of his hiding place in the wood, and they said Henry that he could not resist the multitude of the Scots, turned his horse with the intention of regaining his companions; but Robert opposed him and struck him on the head with an ax that he carried in his hand. Trying to protect or rescue his Lord was overwhelmed by the Scots. This was the beginning of the troubles.’
This encounter took place at Milton Ford on the Bannockburn, the main road from Falkirk to Stirling Castle and entry to the New Park in 1314, a bottleneck where only three or four knights could cross at a time.
