Thank you just got my first shimano reel today was a little confused on how the breaks worked I’ve mostly used lews reels so there a big difference between the two but now I understand 👍

I own casitas 150hg. How do i use lure below 5g. Should i turn on more the brake. Or just on one brake. Brake on means unclip the brake shoes while off means clip the brake shoes. Is it correct from what i understood from your review?

Sorry for the late reply, but I have not thrown lures below 5 grams on the Casitas. Yes, turning brake on would decrease backlash. If the brakes are on, they should be able to flap up and down, as that it how they move to contact the brake pipe. If you’re trying to throw lures under 5 grams, you’re probably better off using a BFS setup or a spinning outfit as they can throw lighter lures farther than a Casitas with less backlash. I use my casitas for lures that weigh between 1/4oz and 3/4oz personally.

Depends on the bait. If you have a light bait and are having issues with backlashes I would turn more brakes on to slow down the spool. Example: If I usually throw a senko with 2 pins on, and the dial set to 3 I would turn the dial up to 6. If that doesn’t cut it Im gonna be putting another pin on. And personally i back it down until it backlashes a little bit than turn the brakes on a little bit. I prefer to run my reels fairly loose. Hope this helps

Why does my bait drop at the same rate even when I mess with the spool tension?

Kenny Thao probably dont loosen it enough. If the knob is about to come off it’s something internal. Look at your manuals if you still have em

Kevin Zap I’ve tried loosening it and tightening it with several different lures but it drops at the same rate. It’s a Shimano Slx Mgl 71hg so the manual comes in Japanese which I don’t understand.

Kenny Thao huh. I know the basic reel stuff but that’s probably internal. I’d take jt to your local tackle shop such as bass pro and have em look at it if your not happy with it. Or try to translate the manual idk

I recorded this video years ago but maybe I’ll do an updated video with all their different reels and their braking systems. But basically, to turn the pins off/on open up the side plate and turn one of the 4-6 pins (some reels have 4 pins, others have 6) on the spool away from you until you hear a little click. The pin should now be free swinging. This means the pin is “ on” and you will get more braking force. To turn the pin off, push the pin back towards you until you hear a click. The pin should not be able to free swing. The pin is now off and you will get less braking force. More braking force usually means a “tighter” setting that allows less backlashes but less casting distance. A “looser” setting will allow you to cast further but might give some backlashes in windy situations or with light lures. With this particular reel, I usually run 2 brakes on and 2 off. Also make sure to set them up evenly for example have the 2 across from each other on and the other two off. This will help evenly distribute the brake force. Hope this helps.

@@kevinzap.fishing How does the 1-6 dial coordinate with the 4 pins? For example, is the 1-6 dial more of a fine tuning of whatever pin configuration you have, or do they work independently?
