The key to making money in stocks is not to get scared out of them. An important key to investing is to remember that stocks are not lottery tickets. get a financial assistant

7:28 The ROTH IRA withdrawals of contributions to stay below the ACA FPL levels cannot be emphasised enough. We have been using a combination of those and 72t/SEPP traditional IRA withdrawals for a few years.

I like to hear more about the issues around 401K to Roth 401K conversions.

I will do Roth conversions first (thanks to you guys). Then I will do some tax gain harvesting. I have held certain equity funds since 1997 (a lot of gains since then). I'll move part of the funds to a more tax-advantaged fund (perhaps municipal bonds). Part of the funds will go back into a similar equity fund - essentially resetting the cost basis.

What if the conversion is at a tax loss ? Say the cost basis is $100k and the conversion is $50k, how is the capital loss handled?

@3:58 you talked about doing a roth conversion is usually better option than tax gain harvesting when you are younger. but don't you have to pay 10% penalty for being under 59.5 anyway? so wouldn't this penalty offset some of the benefits of roth conversions over tax gain harvesting?

My Wife and myself purchased a new car for our daugther for 24000.00. The money came from our joint account. Do we need to file form 709?

There’s an annual amount that can be given each year by individuals that’s excluded from gift tax (reporting) requirements. For 2023, that amount was $17,000. Married couples can gift up to double that amount without needing to report it. There’s also a lifetime gift tax exclusion which could change significantly after 2025.
