To be fair, he's only doing basic shit with a controller, exactly the same as millions of unpaid internet radio DJ's every night of the week. It's not rocket science, and in fact, is piss easy with the technology available (ie everything is sync'd to the same BPM, all the effects are BPM sync'd too, every drop is set up as a cue point on a pad). Skrillex is one of the few producers I would wanna sit down with and ask a bunch of technical shit to. Not just music but, also branding and image stuff. Cuz, I have to admit. Some producers are technically skilled. Some are great at branding and promotion. This dude is good at both. And he learned all that shit way too fast. Aka, he won a Grammy for a dubstep album….like, bro. Fucking how? Cuz, it’s possible. He did it. It was even more unheard of than it is today. It could happen again. But, how in the actual fuck did he do it? Right now, dnb is gonna blow up. Every edm producer is saying this. It’s just a matter of when. Dubstep when skrillex did his thing was almost prideful in its modesty. It was like, skrillex was the Chad Muska of skateboarding but, for edm. He came out, and somehow became a rockstar. And everybody in the community hated him until they realized he was also one of the most skilled in the field. And, I dunno how either of them did it? Cuz, whereas chad lived an explicitly lavish lifestyle. Who knows what fucking car skrillex drives? I don’t. Who knows how much his fit costs? I don’t. I don’t know a think about the dude, other than he’s hyper as fuck and somehow made dubstep 5 years ahead of its time become relevant the moment he made it. It just doesn’t make any sense. But it worked. Whatever the fuck he did. And I gotta know. I’m tryna think back to how I got into dubstep. It was him. Why? I heard my buddy say “yo. This dude makes crazy shit out of memes.” That was it. And than randomly I was listening. Something about the pop culture references hit different. It was satirical in a way. Dubstep prior was super emotional. And deep. Skrillex made it accessible through memes dude. Like, is that the secret sauce. If something is too technical, just make it seem funny? Cuz I think it is. Looking at some of the more successfully dubstep producers now, most, if not all songs have a joke in them. Than, there’s skrillex’s image. A party animal with over the top energy and charisma. I mean. Maybe there’s a formula here. Take something really hard, technical and complex, make it seem like a joke, than present it like an animal. And people will have no choice but to notice. Than adapt into the mainstream. Boom. But that still seems to simple. There’s something more. And that is what I wanna know.

There's a LOT to unpack from Skrillex and his life Jackson. He was a musician first and foremost, and he just happened to go into production and DJing. But hey, if the guy is genuine, and lives simply, then it's all good!
@Slotherson

Well it's not like he came out of nowhere. He was the face of From First to Last before he went solo, he's known music his whole life; and when he went solo the person that picked him up and put them on their label was Deadmau5. However you feel about deadmau5, the dude is one of the most prolific dj's on earth. For a long time, i fucking hated skrillex, I was listening to dubplates back in 06 and hearing everyone refer to every genre as dubstep killed me inside for a long time. Dust settles, and skrillex did nothing but improve his sound design, mixing and mastering both live and in studio, and then went to try new genres and bring smaller artists that were once in his position to heights they'd never dream of (a reminder that Porter Robinson's Spitfire was one of his labels first releases; as was Skream, one of thee biggest inspirations for dubstep, first foray into house music) Skrillex is a genius, 10 years ago i would've said luck, but he's proven with work and dedication that he's a genius.

Thought I would add my point of view. (DJ RENE) Been in the business for over 40 years and have gone through many changes using various pieces of the technology. Like an artist/performer its all about entertaining your audience. In some cases a singer you may stand center stage with a mic stand and not move, in others cases they dance across a 100ft stage with lights, effects and pyro. The technology used in both cases may differ as well as their delivery techniques but the intention is the same, to satisfy the paying customer. There are many sides to a pyramid but there all lead to the same tip. The lesson here is to learn where possible, improve where necessary with the single goal to incorporate aspects of the trade that will enable you to increase your personal earnings. Thanks Carlo for your efforts and sharing when possible.

I relate so much with Sonny Moore. Started my musical journey with no rhythm at all. Progressively got better with that as I grinded hours upon hours learning guitar. On top of it, I got to play with a buddy that was learning to drum, so we progressed together. Quite the unique situation! We ended up starting a band together, and toured a bit, until tragedy hit. However, I kept all my musical gains and applied it to DJin'. It's really not hard at all tbh! Just have to get familiar with all the techniques and processes. (which you have made incredibly easy) I might seem like I"m fanboying hard here, haha, because I am. You're truly awesome for taking the time to explain everything you've learned over the years. It's one thing to be a teacher and a player. You definitely have both. I call it musical ambidextrous. :P I'm not starting the journey to making my own samples/songs. I know how to Scream and sing vocally, so it's gonna be a lot of fun! What are some cool samples you've come up with for effects during your songs? Anything that is unique to DJ Carlo?!

Good analytics man I like the way you break it down I'm by no means a beginner but the way you put it is super easy to understand and absolutely correct you Don't throw any untrue stuff well I disagree with backspinning at any time but ty hats just my preference it can work sometimes as you mentioned

I really would love to see this kind of video about "Die Gebrüder Brett" simply bc I as a total amateur just don't understand their mixing especially with their pc. Also I would like to see Rooler, but I guess both are a little bit too much out of the normal spectrum, music wise :) Ps: good video as always, greets from Germany :D

People talking about how deep he is going whilst DJing. Honestly this is my first time watching this video and my friends, other djs I know and myself all use all of these methods already

It's funny really, because the illusion of the trade is shattered when you really know what goes on behind the decks. The casual crowd listener though wouldn't know how any of this is happening though!

He is a subpar DJ - This is only my opinion. I am a turntablist with over 20 years of experience. The antics and booty shaking whilst standing over the turntables is kind of ridiculous. Idk how much people pay to go see him, but I would imagine that it is not cheap by any standard. I wince when big name DJ's can't even string together 3 songs without making it a spectacle. Alright, I'm done ranting. Hahaaa. Be well!

Hahahaha, point taken Ryan! Though Skrillex probably puts on a spectacle due to his time in a band. The showmanship can't leave haha

@@djcarlo Thanks Carlo, I think Sven is a little more ´low key´ than the young guns but I like the way he lets the music take centre stage and not the DJ, perhaps a bit oldskool but I like this. I also of course love Hardwell etc. he really gets the crowd going. The style I dislike (hate) is Timmy Trumpet who just not fit the culture of some chilled festivals. A question, why are you not at big festivals like Mysteryland? Would love to see you play live. Where do you DJ now? If in the area (Germany, Europe), I will definitely come to see you as you are an inspiration and love your style.

@@djcarlo Bro, I'm really loving your videos dude! I just got a DDJ-200 Controller a couple days ago, and I gotta say, your videos really helped me get started working on it. I had Musicality from the day I was born to having DJ knowledge for 7 years now. You really helped me in getting more used to my controller, and now all I gotta say is thank you man! Keep doing what you're doing, your videos really expanded my vision on the whole DJ'ing scene now, and I can say, I'm super excited for what's coming next.

Unsure why this has popped up on my feed but this is hilarious! Style over substance. Kids, being a DJ comes from the heart. It’s nothing to do with fame, fortune or dancing around like some clown. It’s about getting two turntables, a box of wax and practicing. Don’t be like everyone else, do your own thing and stay true to what a DJ is. If you need a reference point, google Dave Mancuso.

Backspin is old school. House DJs in the 90s in the UK were doing them then. And Jamaican sound systems were doing them before that. Although it's more commonly known as a rewind.
