Eric Coll relating how Steve Jobs ended the GSM-TDMA-CDMA-1X-UMTS cellular standards wars with his iPhone.
Before 4G, carriers had a choice of different, incompatible spectrum-sharing technologies.
The carriers formed into two camps:
- the camp that used 2G CDMA and 1X (Verizon, Sprint, Bell, Telus and others) and
- the camp that used 2G TDMA/GSM and UMTS (AT&T Wireless, Rogers, European carriers and most others).
Steve invented the world's most popular consumer device... and only let carriers in the GSM-TDMA camp have it.
Verizon, Sprint, Bell and the others threw in the towel to get the iPhone. They agreed to go with the GSM-TDMA camp's plan for 4G, called LTE, and at the same time the GSM-TDMA camp's standard for 3G data, called HSPA.
The result was a worldwide single standard for cellular, starting with the fourth generation, thanks to Steve.
