There is a lot more hidden costs to home ownership than the mortgage. Just wait until your roof goes bad or you need to replace big stuff like siding. That stuff can easily cost 20k. Lots of people can afford the mortgage costs until stuff goes wrong. In the end houses are a waste of money and has only been great to own one during inflationary periods like now.

Who knows what other degrees, certifications she might have in pharmacology, psychology, &/or counseling. Plus, if she is a single mother, she probably maxed out her federal students loans to provide for her family. Another thing not talked about that there is no limit on the amount you can borrow with a Graduate Student Loan Plus. Yes, you need a co-signer & the amount is limited based on full/part time status, but the idea that someone could borrow money in perpetuity to go to grad school or higher demonstrates how the system is not setup to advance people's careers.

I'm a 29 year old millennial. I have zero student loan because my post 911 GI bill paid for both my bachelor's degree and MBA. I served four years in the army. Military lifestyle was very difficult for me (waking up at 05:45 am to do physical training, the possibility of being deployed to a foreign country) but it was worth it. Now I have free healthcare through VA, which saved me tons of money. I also used the VA loans to purchase two houses in nice neighborhoods. The equity from my homes is in the six figure already, a good way to build generational wealth. I'm glad I didn't do the "traditional" route of taking out student loans.

It should be of note that NBC in the last few years started doing reports on “how student debtors” can’t afford homes. This has always been an issue. But with a decline in the housing market it has become obvious. The fact of the matter is student loans are irrational, but they maintained the system when they could get away with it as long as the predatory system pumped universities with money. Right now with high interest rates it’s irrational to buy a home at the moment. But it’s also expensive to rent. The rational thing for young people is move away from the USA and get their education else where. The USA does not want an educated and debt free population.

If it was done like a car loan or other basic loan methods I would have paid a large amount of that to principal. It's holding millennials back but also senior women who have raised families and not made the money they needed to raise their families alone after their husbands left them holding the bag. The debt needs to be forgiven, all of it. It would open the economy and boost the economy. Women would be able to invest in homes and have that to pass on to their kids. Due to interest, my debt has increased 2 1/2 times. $10,000 is insulting. Bernie would have cancelled the it right away, but Clyburn and Obama didn't want to lose their donor money so they put the kabosh on Bernie who was winning the primary up to that point. Biden needs and can do better.🗽👵🕊️🕯️🧐

Bernie would have tried to cancel it and he would have failed. Less than 1/3 of the democrats would sign on to full loan forgiveness. Biden is stopping at 10k because of how conservative congress is. No idea why you people think Bernie would have magically done everything he promised. His track record of pushing bills as a senator isn't very good.

It's not the house price it's the debt to income ratio which makes them too big of a risk even for a lower priced home. The woman had 220k in debt and likely makes over 100k. But 220k is an enormous amount if debt. And that likely doesn't include credit cards, etc....

You will pay for life for a mistake you made when you were 16 yo to 24 yo. For many, sui cide will be the only way out. I'm a 52 yo Gen Xer, I know from experience, I graduated with my masters in 1996 and was immediately in the hole $70K. It's now ballooned to $130K (interest).

Loans, regardless of student or otherwise are agreements between two consenting parties that agree to the terms and conditions of the loan. It is incumbent upon the borrower to understand the terms and conditions they ultimately sign off on. College is not a right, nor necessity to life, rather a decision. It is not the debt hodling them back in as much as it is their decision to take on that debt. Your choice, your accountability.

No one was forcing anyone to take a student loan. You went to college because you’re smart, you’re willing and accepted the terms of the loan, you didn’t complained when you took the money. Now you have a degree, because of that you’re earning more than those who have no degree. Take a big portion of your check and pay off that loan as fast as you can. We don’t need to hear you complaining about interest that you already know. Be responsible and pay what you owed. Don’t ask the government to pay part of that loan. That’s tax payers money. We have nothing to do with that loan.

@paulstandaert5709

@@silo18 I would say a little bit of all of the above. Maybe somewhere in those four years, a person would look at the loan statement and do some basic math and ask, "Gee, is all of this going to be worth it just to earn $50,000 per year?" And it's not like loan payment calculators are not easily found for free on the internet these days. Watching these news reports gives me the impression that they didn't even bother to look at the loan statement, and finally, after four years, they are in shock regarding how compounding interest works.... You know, what we should have learned in about 8th grade. Or if you borrowed $5.00 from an older sibling at around age 10. You learn quickly how interest works and what happens when it isn't paid back. These loan borrowers are going to now have TWO AND A HALF YEARS of interest free financing. And jobs are everywhere. And they just want it completely erased. Gee, why not do that with my mortgage so I can afford to go to college? Why not erase my car loan so I can go to college? It's the same thing. Money is money. You get to decide where it goes, but you should not be able to decide where mine will go. I do not care how another person handles his or her finances, as long as the consequences of their actions do not fall on my plate, and this LOAN FORGIVENESS IS SOMETHING I WILL HAVE TO HELP EAT! This is after I already ate all of mine. No. You dished it up, YOU get to eat it. Learn. I did. Now it's your turn. Maybe these colleges should have a prerequisite class regarding how loans work. If you don't figure it out then, you do not get to finish your degree.
