Chicken and waffles are one of the world's great culinary odd couples. A perfect pairing of savory and sweet, the dish is rooted in the tradition of Southern soul food, and popularized by chains like Roscoe's in L.A. But some might be surprised to learn that chicken and waffles were actually first combined in Harlem, a product of the jazz clubs of the 1920s. Now, nearly a century later, NYC's Sweet Chick is using the dish as a blank canvas for blending regional flavors, covering its chicken and waffles in everything from Nashville-style seasoning, to tangy General Tso's sauce. While Sweet Chick might not be ground zero for chicken-and-waffle purists everywhere, owner John Seymour seeks to capture the cultural landscape of NYC in 2018-bringing hip-hop and comfort food together at locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and now Long Island City, Queens.
