Is tech really dead? The season 2 finale of the bad batch left us feeling all sorts, and I for one am somewhat heartbroken over the death of tech. Afterall the character development he went through during this season and the promise of a deeper romantic relationship with Phee that will now go unfulfilled, it really is a tragic ending for Tech’s story. Or is it? Like any major character death moments, us fans always can’t help but ask ourselves if a beloved character is truly dead after all (scene). So let’s take a deeper look at the bits of information we have surrounding Tech’s supposed death and whether it makes sense for Tech to return from a character and plot perspective.
The first bit to really talk about is the circumstance and manner in which Tech falls to his death. After making the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that the rest of his team mates live on, Tech then begins to fall from a great height. And it's basically a given by this point that unless there is a deep enough pool of water or some really fluffy snow, there is no chance Tech is surviving this. Even if there was water or snow, you can still expect some serious damage after falling from that height. Some fans have pointed out that maybe Tech might have had some thrusters or some sort of equipment in his backpack that could have helped him survive, but honestly I think this isn’t really the case. The fact that we haven’t seen him use such equipment despite several instances for him to do so, suggests that what we see is what we get. The second part to Tech’s death occurs later where we see Dr Hemlock present Hunter with Tech’s damaged goggles. Which seems to suggest and confirm that tech is really gone for good. The show doesn’t really beat around the bush and Dr Hemlock just straight up says that Tech is dead while in the process of guilt tripping Hunter.
And I think even from a character perspective there is a certain finality to tech’s death. Not only was his sacrifice meaningful for the survival of his whole team but it can also be interpreted as a painful reminder of unfulfilled potential especially where clones are concerned. As I have mentioned before, a recurring motif throughout this season is about clones choosing to be more than just soldiers. Making their own decisions and deciding their own fates. A struggle which each of the members of the bad batch have all individually gone through. And so with the case of Tech, it's really about his future being cut short, not having the opportunity to fully explore what he could be besides a soldier. Whether it could have been a racer or a lover, or even both, we will never truly know. And this tragedy that is Tech’s fate is so poignant because it serves as a reminder to the rest of the clones. That it's better to live your life as you see fit now lest it be cut short tomorrow. And so even from a character perspective, it doesn’t seem like Tech is coming back. If at all choosing to revive Tech as he is would probably undermine his sacrifice and really cheapen the stakes. So from a creative perspective, it doesn’t seem like he is coming back.
But what if Tech had to come back and in a way that doesn’t cheapen his initial sacrifice. Well, if we had to bring Tech back, I think it really has everything to do with Dr Hemlock. As we saw during the finale, Dr Hemlock is in possession of Tech’s goggles, and while he mostly uses it as a way to get into Hunter’s head and acts sort of as a confirmation that Tech is indeed dead, there is one other thing it also suggests. That being that Tech’s body is in Hemlock’s possession. And this is a huge point to note as we learned earlier the previous episode that Hemlock is immensely interested in clones, specifically clones for him to experiment on. And so whether Tech is dead or hanging on to an inch of his life, you can be assured that Hemlock isn’t going to miss this opportunity to experiment on Tech. And this is highly likely the case if you also take into account that tech and the rest of the bad batch are mutated clones, which to Hemlock might present a unique case for him to study. Especially on his quest to unlock the secrets of cloning...
