On Sunday, 3 March Pastor Craig Baxter continued the series 'Genesis: God's Unveiling Plan of Redemption and Blessing' with 'How Temptation Works' from Genesis 2:25-3-7.
Our passage tells of the heart-wrenching fall of Adam, as our representative before God, into sin. Here we see the serpent tempt Adam and Eve by raising serious doubt about the Word of God, the integrity of God and the goodness of God in giving the commandment to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. As a result, the appeal of the forbidden tree to the senses of the woman prompted her to eat from the tree and give to her husband, whereby they became naked and ashamed. In this study we learn that we are called to overcome temptation from the world, the flesh and the devil by gaining a thorough knowledge of God’s Word, unwaveringly trusting in God’s goodness and maintaining continual vigilance.
1. Temptation often comes in disguise (v. 1a)
2. Temptation aims to sow doubt about God’s Word (vv. 1b-3)
3. Temptation aims to sow doubt about God’s integrity (v. 4)
4. Temptation aims to sow doubt about God’s goodness (v. 5)
5. Temptation appeals to our senses (v. 6)
6. Temptation yielded to brings forth death (v. 7)
