I seriously think that ETH just shifted away from his core ideas and plans after the 4-0 loss to Brentford & never returned to them (did see flashes but that's all). 1st season, he identified the strengths in our squad and adopted a style which "protected" them and he has continued with that. 1st season was all about results for ETH and he did succeed but the thing is, you would want to give your 1st and 2nd seasons in building the base to implement your style of play. From the 2nd season, he built his tactics around the nature of the players he inherited, instead of sticking to his forte, possession based football. I don't blame him at all, because if he had continued with playing out from the back, with De Gea, Maguire, Lindelof, McFred, asking Rashford and Bruno to break down low blocks, asked CR7, Martial to press, etc after the 4-0 Brentford, he wouldn't have lasted till 2023 even, because our fans wouldn't be that patient. Now, when the tactics are oriented around individual talent and their strengths, then they are failing him because the supposedly best players at our club are talented but aren't consistent or reliable (I would always choose effort, consistency, robustness and reliability over talent). The severe mismanagement of our club over a decade will still continue to show effects. Sacking ETH will just give you quick fixes, but the same fans will turn on the next manager if he isn't successful in a short time, it's like a new manager is just a dopamine hit for fans. If you could have just given Ole a lethal ST, a solid DM and more depth in defence, he could have continued our development after finishing 2nd in 20/21 and losing UEL. So, Let's be patient for God's sake.

I understand where you’re coming from. You don’t want to sack another manager and restart the process again, I completely understand the frustration it would put on us as fans to go through another restart. That being said, who is this system really benefiting? What player do you see “performing” well in this system? Rashford had 40+ GA in the season ETH came in when he played as a LF or outlet for chance creation, ETH has asked him to be a playmaking touch line winger now. Bruno fernandes is given license to erratically press and vacate space in midfield, kobbie mainoo and Casemiro don’t have the physicality to not only cover that space but also win duels in his man marking midfield system. Dalot and Mazroui who could help in build up are told to bomb forward , and we only build out from the back with maximum 3 outfield players, Martinez , De ligt and Casemiro/Mainoo whoever chooses to drop in. Onana rarely uses his distribution to full effect(which is why we bought him). The press can only work when mason mount is there and he’s injury prone. The fact of the matter is, ETH’s system is massively flawed, and can only work with world class players in every position. And even then, I doubt it would do so well sometimes. Every single time he’s tried to implement HIS system, we get smashed, or a team performs superbly against us. We have a deep line regardless of which centrebacks are playing, we have caverns in midfield regardless of what player is playing as a single pivot. It just isn’t going to work. And at this point we’re all just waiting for the inevitable

Like he asks Martinez to make pin point pitch perfect line breaking passes through high presses or mid blocks. That cannot work 100% of the times especially if you’re playing against bigger teams and you don’t have physical players that can tussle when they receive it under pressure DEEP in the opposition third. Its MASSIVELY flawed, regardless of personnel, regardless of whoever you want to take out of the side.

I'm out of ideas personally. And I don't know if ETH is out of ideas, but the team definitely looks like they have an idea of what to do but they can't do it. The idea is ultra-fast transitions, pressing high up the pitch and switching the ball from side to side to try to create 1v1s. And the team just can't do it. The switches are inaccurate. The pressing sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, but it always feels suicidal. The transitions fail due to strikers not being able to hold the ball up or inaccurate passes. Nothing is really working and I don't know why. I can see the plan and what ETH wants to do, but the execution is not there. The coach has to take responsibility for that alongside his players.

Which is why we should've signed at least one winger to replace Rashford and Sancho, a better play making midfielder instead of Ugarte, and there has to be questions about Bruno when he creates SO many chances, but people are correctly making comments like this about how little chances we create when we aren't forcing counter attacks, especially for our strikers. Granted, ETH definitely couldn't have done this all in one transfer window, which is why I think it's silly that people are doubting him after 3 games, but he does need to finish his business in the next transfer window or two.

I really like the winger shout because, even tho dalot is not left footed, the full backs and wingers aren’t working well together. One of the biggest issues against Liverpool was a lack of penetration because everyone was afraid of losing possession and ending the attack but nobody was making the runs necessary to create danger for Liverpool especially in the first half. Everyone wanted to get on the ball so we ended up having long sequences of possession with no penetration as the wide attacks were horrible. Liverpool often let our full backs sneak behind the press and get free however even when we did use this to create a 2v1 out wide it always felt like our players were unsure of which pass to look for next and they would get held up and the play would break down or we would play it backwards it feels like our fullbacks want to overlap but are hesitant to commit too far forward yet when they invert Mainoo and Bruno aren’t really getting forward to cause problems for Liverpool in the half spaces. It feels like a team that wants to keep the ball and hope that something happens in the final third to work with because our biggest chances this season have mainly come from counter attacks. All the blame can’t go to Ten Hag as lots of individual errors cost us the game but also cost us possession or in the final third sloppy passes didn’t allow us to get a shot away etc also this team needs more time playing this system to get used to playing as a Possesion based team. I think United should use artificial counter attacks more often like De Zerbi does and we have seen United use this a few times this season but with Onana getting on the ball deeper it would allow United to draw out the press and play around it and then create 4v3 or 4v4 or 5v4 opportunities further forward in a counter artificial counter attack which we are familiar with

Great video. Spot on, especially about the back line and Mainoo. I can see and appreciate what Ten Hag is trying to do, but I think it's obvious this his players can't do it. What I will say is that I still think he has the problem of not making a proper decision on how he wants to play and getting the right players to do so. You're 100% right on our back line, Onana, and Mainoo wanting to play slower, possession football. How Ten Hag played at Ajax. Zirkzee is another signing that goes along with that. However, that's impossible with players like Casemiro, Bruno, and Rashford in the team, who want to do the complete opposite. Still playing all of them together makes me question his goals in terms of play style, and Ugarte just confuses it even more. We are very clearly missing a controlling midfielder who can dictate tempo. Ugarte is the opposite, who wants a messier game. 3 seasons in and still a team in two halves, but I trust that he'll continue cleaning out the squad in the next transfer window anyway.

From what I’ve seen at PSG (and it’s not much), he likes to keep things simple - win the ball back, give a simple short pass to relieve the pressure, leave build-up and controlling tempo to others. The reason for space btwn the midfield and defense is when the forward and midfield are attacking and pressing the defenders are defending we need to work as a team not individual. If the players are moving up the pitch the entire team should move up the pitch. If the team is defending make sure the entire team is behind the ball and cutting off passing lane and another thing is player alertness the goal which brighton scored the players were all absent minded.

Very well said, you can notice rashford under ole used to make inverted runs in to the final third thats his job and thats where he excels There was a hint of such a gameplay last yr against Liverpool in that famous 4-3 win at OT in the final 30 minutes he started making those inverted runs the moment Bruno was very deep in the midfield and he scored the equaliser exactly like that. You are clearly right about players being used the wrong way but this is also somewhat a coaching problem as well. If you have a structure and plan ready, communicated to your players it should be executed by those players. So please every united fan out there who is blaming ETH calm down and wait till Christmas. The only players i think are actually being used properly are whoevers playing rb (weirdly cause this an incredibly complex role, but they can both do it) and garnacho whos being used as a low touch outlet and high volume dribbler.

Onana is forced to play long balls because Utd struggle to play through the press. If the ball is always short teams will play higher up the pitch. Mainoo has to run because his range of pass is so limited, if no teammate is within 10 yards he has to run. Fernandes had a striker to “create” for last season and couldn’t find him with a map. Rashford should be able to play out wide and make those runs, it’s not one or the other. He also failed to create for Hojland…..as did Garnacho and Antony. Hojland spent last season making decoy runs for everyone else to get shots off. All of them should be able to mix up the play to make it harder for defences to play against them. That is the only way Utd will start scoring freely. Utd need to move up and down the pitch being aware of the spaces being left to stop them getting picked apart by average teams, that would be a good place for ETH to start.

You really nailed everything in my mind this morning…… Rashford is not a winger like Doku Rashford loves to run into space and he loves playing in between the lines of the fullbacks and the center backs, so for Rashford to accomplish this he needs a fullback from his team to make the overlapping runs most of the time I’ve seen Rashford left on the wing with 2v1 whereas players at man city and Arsenal literally good at this point immediately you mark the winger in 2v1 it creates a space behind their defense and the fullbacks will either make a under lapping runs or overlapping runs in not seeing our full backs doing that with our wingers yet I’ve only seen that on the right hand side with Amad and Mazraoui but Dalot is not working well on the left hand side with Rashford and that’s the main reason we saw a beast Rashford in preseason because he was playing with a proper Left back in Harry Amass and here comes the season it’s difficult for him I wish one of our Left backs can come back quicker after the international break it’ll really help Rashford and if Luke Shaw could make it. It will help our playing out from the back too so that issue needs to be addressed quickly and again it’s high time we need hojlund to bury those chances we’ve been creating because last season the problem was that we didn’t create many chances but now we’re creating the chances but no striker to bury those chances And in that midfield we need a destroyer cuz we already have Mainoo who can dictate the tempo of the game but we need that fresh legs to cover grounds these are the issues now…… Though to be honest we’re not playing that bad in the last three games we just need to start burying our chances and that’s where we need to unleash hojlund and we need to use the width more on the left hand side by getting in a proper left back to assist Rashford This are my take

All our problems come from being forced to play Bruno. I remember the exchange between Messi and Zidane where both agree that football has moved away from the old no. 10 position. It is either two 6s and two 8s or one 6 and two 8s. A good defensive team must have atleast 3 midfielders who would do their defensive positioning with discipline. In the first season of EtH Eriksen and Casemiro did their defensive duties a bit extra to cover for Bruno’s lack of it. Despite people’s impression, Eriksen was the deep lying playmaker with Casemiro as the 8 in that system. Eriksen’s role was similar to that of a Toni Kroos. Sure Eriksen wouldn’t tackle, but defense is more about good positioning. Casemiro’s biggest problem is the absence of Eriksen imo. But Eriksen cannot play these days. The solution, as everyone seems to know it, is to have a balanced midfield with a 6 and two 8s. It doesn’t even matter who all plays. It could be Ugarte- Casemiro/Collyer -Mount/Mainoo. But Bruno just cannot play in that system. Sure, that once in a game hollywood pass will be sacrificed, but United will stop conceding silly goals in that process. The score-lines would be 1-0 or 2-0 wins instead of 4-0, 6-3, 7-0, 4-3 losses etc. Think of Ozil with Arteta. Everybody, including EtH knows this- but no one knows how to manage this Bruno situation. Because he will throw a tantrum if kept in the bench. Fans wouldn’t like it either. I just hope the directors see the problem and get rid of him in the winter transfer window.

ETH has been clear in his style of play and you can see this by the player he’s bought which is his old Ajax team near enough, United only got Casemiro because they couldn’t get De Jong. So clearly he wants Casemiro to that job but he can’t because he not press resistance and his pass choice has been found wanting (at Real Madrid they moved him out of the build up play higher up the pitch). United have this season been much more patient in build up play but in the Liverpool game tried to be too direct at times when moving through the thirds (old habits die hard). The loss has been over exaggerated. United also played through Liverpools press times, played on the counter when they could etc… the difference was the final ball or the ball before final ball was appalling. Finally Zirkzee is not fit enough and understands the pressing structure. He was near enough blowing after 30 mins.

We have a very talented team that just needs to be tweeked tactically (mostly playing in the compact way all of the best teams do) and then I think you'll see us really putting teams to the sword.

Why does ETH still need to assess Onana and Licha’s strengths? He managed both of them at Ajax. You’d think after his third season at the club he’d have a bit more of an idea on how he wants to play football. You’re talking like he’s just walked through the door.

I know how Manchester United can improve. Drop the 4-2-4 formation, I know it says they play a 4-2-3-1 but Bruno doesn't play in midfield. Drop Rashford and Bruno sell Casemiro. Play Ugarte, Mainoo and Mount in a 3 man midfield. With Garnacho Hojlund and Amad up front. The defence isn't the problem it's how easy it is to get to it.

We still have players who can't play Possession based Football like Man City or Barcelona, and that's when individual mistakes come from. If we need Possession based Football, Ten Hag should only pick and play players who are good on the ball which Bruno, Rashford, Antony Santos and Maguire are clearly not.

I think Jason Wilcox would need to play a musical instrument such that the players understand what position to take on the pitch when the music is being played. Because the players's views are all limited, only the guy from above can know the ideal position. Each player need to wear an earphone to hear the music. For example, if high note is being played, everybody need to press and defenders would push up. If low note they can relax and sit back. If they want more instructions from the musical instrument, they can use more than one instrument. For example a piano and violin can create a discrete number of distinct tones. So thats the job for Jason Wilcox to figure out.

We played better in ten Hag's first season. His obsession with being the fastests transition team in Europe is destroying us. There is literally no system. It's relentless pressing for 90 mins followed by hoofing the ball up the pitch as soon as we get it only to lose possession immediately and start pressing again. It looks like basketball, not football, and we show zero control over games. No wonder we have so many injuries. He needs to revert to gaining possession and retaining it and finding ways to break down low blocks with the likes of Hojlund, Zirkzee, Amad, Garnacho, Antony and Rashford as options up top and Bruno, Mount and Mainoo as options for providing the creativity from midfield.

Martinez is being given too much grace and escaping any objective criticism. We know large swathes of the fanbase don't actually know what they are watching when they tune in to our matches but his limitations are ignored because he's "passionate" and dives in( a symptom of poor positioning and lack of athleticism) his ball playing ability is vastly overrated he has a average to good long passing range but his descion making is erratic when pressed and dribbling isn't great. When you combine that with a lack of athleticism and physical stature it's clear varane carried him.

Kobbie’s 2nd season as a starter. Garnacho’s 2nd season as starter. Hojlund’s second season, De Ligt’s first season, Mazraoui’s first season, Onana’s 2nd season, Mount’s 1st season if you really think about it. The team has taken a lot of changes and genuinely needs time to gel. The Liverpool team is very well established even with a new coach. Rashford’s form is worrying and Fernandes’s decision making at times has been questionable. Trust the process. Easy to blame the manager when the players are not doing the business. Ugarte hopefully plugs a massive whole in the team and completely transfers the team.

@@thiagogusmao1397 During his tenure, Ten Hag has won two trophies in 2 seasons so how about that? The team should be performing better but the players need to take far more responsibility. It doesn’t all fall on the manager’s shoulders. Rashford for example should be hitting his peak goal and assists numbers in a United shirt but it’s not happening. The less said about Maguire, Antony, Casemiro the better but these guys with big names and on big wages need to start performing.

Ten Hag can improve under 1 condition, he must grow balls and bench Rashford and Casemiro and let Garnacho play at LW while Amad at RW and play Ugarte at DM after the International break and let Collyer and Kone be the backup. Since coming to United, he has lost his ruthlessness and become a coward, keep using players who are not suiting his system and throwing him under the bus. I understand loyalty but this is turning into stupidity.

Garnacho has scored in 4 of his last 42 league games. 5 assists across 50 games in all comps last season. He has virtually no end product, but as last season showed he is much more effective on the right than the left. It's not as though he hasn't had opportunities on the left, he played on the left 37 times last season, scored in 3 of those games. Dropping a player you hate and putting in a lesser player that you have a boner for isn't going to change a damn thing.
