Your part about Eren seeking freedom so purely he was willing to kill everyone got me thinking. The only way Eren could possibly realistically achieve the freedom he sought was through death, his character never had it in him to kill all of his friends, especially not Mikasa. That ties back to the conversation between Zeke and Armin in the paths, "Perhaps one's final moments brings relief. Maybe the end of days... feels like freedom." His death was inevitable, with this ending, he found his freedom. My main critique of the ending was originally that it felt like it betrayed the theme of fighting for freedom, but with this perspective it absolute doesn't. I'd like to delve deeper into this idea for each character. Through each characters personal lens, did they achieve their definition of freedom with this ending?

Well, essentially their goal was to get rid of titans. The titans brought problems to the conflict, it being the mediator of all the struggles all sides in the world dealt with. When it is gone, it brought peace for time being. Isayama really fleshed out the real truth: War never ends, it only continues in other ways.

I view Eren as a modern day warlord/freedom fighter/terrorist/ warrior, etc... who's only solution or method of solving conflict is through violence and they enjoy it and are good at it. Now, picture a violent person who's obsessed with FREEDOM in modern day.. forget titan powers and this anime ( sounds familiar?) Give that person a "bad guy" to fight across the seas in the name of freedom.. they're able to channel that violence for good so they're seen as a "hero" which is season 1-3 Eren. Sure, they may be fighting for their country, but ultimately, they're doing it because it's innate to their personality. They're born for violence. They're ultimately doing it for themselves which is what Eren said to Armin when he said he thought he was doing it for his friends but he got two of them killed. If you were to remove the "bad guy" out of that equation, these people will still find a way to channel that violence for "freedom" in some way. They may lash out at fellow civilians or even friends. Now, give them God-like powers and you have Eren. tl:dr Eren is a slave to freedom and his method of achieving it is violence. It's only a coincidence, in the beginning, that his motivation aligned with his people/friends and so was seen as the protagonist. When given the opportunity to solve the conflict with various solutions, he couldn't help but continue his selfish desires to get HIS freedom. He was an idiot who got control of too much power, but ultimately got his freedom in the end.

Here's the real reason why people hated the ending: 1: Eren killed his own mother by sending the smiling titan. It was a shtty plotwist that didn't need to happen. It would've been better if it was like, eren tried saving his mother but he wasn't able to change the past. 2: Erens motivation to do the rumbling was dumb. He said he didn't know why he did it, and maybe he was just an idiot. It would've been better if he said that he didn't have a choice, he has the power to do the rumbling to save his people and he was out of options because Zeke only has a year left and he doesn't want historia to become a titan. 3: ymir love king fritz and can't escape his love? That's why she needed to see Mikasa kill the person she loved, just to be free? Lol

Kruger hates Marley and would have them killed which was his mission and Ymir didn’t really like anyone in the alliance and wanted Historia safe with Eren. If she saw Historia has a husband she would of sided with Eren same with Bertholdt 5. Mikasa forgetting her time with Eren in paths when she shouldn’t be affected by Eren because she’s an Ackerman 6. Paradis getting destroyed (it should have shown that civil wars happening or not and Eren should of won) 7. The Jaegerist just allow the alliance to walk freely and allow Marley to still exist (until 100 years)

@@bornanime3255 I wasn't taking into account all of those things external to the anime. I don't think those things matter, a good story is gonna be good whether it's known by 1 person or 1 million people. Also I don't think the fights and action scenes are the bulk of what makes an anime good, I think it's the message it sends and the feelings it makes you feel, also the thoughts it makes you have. Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan accomplished these things equally for me, so that's why I consider them to be equally as good. The issue here is that most people care a lot about fights and are not willing to stay there for the more "boring" (actually deep) stuff. Season 2 had way less action but way more character development and deep introspection into Thorfinn's character, it makes season 2 superior to season 1 for me, but most people don't care about that, and that's why Vinland Saga isn't popular like AoT.

@@DestopLine Art is not separate from the environment around it. Plus, popularity is a reflection of the people and their own tastes. Buzz and attention changes the air around a piece of art completely and how others approach it then and years after. It changes the perception and discussion as well as the people and art around it. Even if the story is the same. A masterpiece that only you know vs a masterpiece you can share with friends are two different things. And I'm not saying action is the bulk of what makes something good, but whether you like it or not things have to have presentation. If I gave the best speech of my life with the most beautiful things to say, but no one's listening because I'm boring then I've failed as a speech giver. Manga, anime, stories, etc are all entertainment. Attack on Titan had better presentation, which greatly improves a work. If all that mattered was the message then you could just read a plot summary. But instead you view anime and manga because you want to FEEL things. Happy, sad, angry, excited, frustrated. You want to join in and engage with this fictional world right? Then you want to be entertained. So fights n junk are important.

Manga Ending and Tone was very different and rushed compared to the Anime, which explains a lot of the things better. So the ending we got in the Anime is actually superbly good compared to the Manga + Extra Chapters. Because people not only hated what Armin said about "Thank you for being a mass murderer for us Eren!" in the manga, but also the fact that they thought Eren didn't achieve anything at all, since after all we see Paradis destroyed. And in the manga, you can't actually see the timelapse. In the Anime, you can clearly see the Timelapse that it took probably more than a thousand of years before any kind of war was fought. And having a war, where the central theme of the series is, is actually normal. There will always be war. But the Manga community thought since Paradis got wiped, it was all for nothing. Not accounting how many years have actually passed.

@@Bingchilling11 The problem with the ending is that no matter how many people of the outside world Eren killed, his actions didn't make him evil. And we keep calling him a 'slave to freedom,' as though the author gave Eren any other options. Before he attacked the outside world, they literally declared war on Paradis. There is nothing evil or wrong about Eren's choices and the problem that people have with the ending is just how much the author tries tell us there is one. Having Eren people team up with the enemy to kill him was just ridiculous since everything he did was doing up to that point was for them. There should've been some additional motivation for armin and everyone to decide to stop Eren. Spectacle became more of a priority than logic at that point. What would've made more sense would've been if they had Eren lose control and somehow people in paradis was also getting attacked. Deciding to kill Eren when the world was literally uniting to kill everyone in paradis made absolutely no sense.

You can find a few hundred essays talking about this ending and giving you concrete issues with the plot and inconsistencies with characterization, as well as underlying ideological issues that are problematic. You just make it seem like people were complaining that certain characters got to live or die, or that people complaining about good/happy endings. That's honestly not what the majority of people were criticizing the show for. You literally gloss over how the ending fucks up a lot of previously established characterization, how the time travel and titan powers make no sense, and ignore the deeper political and philosophical implications of the work (you don't seem to reference the mangaka's problematic political history). All-in-all this is a boring 7-minute essay with literally no depth.

Isayama is really a pro-imperialist, pro-fascist, pro-ultranationalist, and pro-Zionist. It's kind of funny that he represents Marley as the old oppressors, which are the Nazis, and the Eldians as the new oppressors, which represent the Zionist Jews. On the Marley side, they have the infamous Eldian concentration camp, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the Nazis' Jewish concentration camp during the Holocaust. On the Edian side, they have Eren's religious ultranationalistic cult called Yeagerist, for which they have a prejudicial agenda against non-Eldian races that bears resemblance to Zionist Jews' agenda in wiping out all of the Palestinians in their "land". For example, there was a time when Erens' rumbling stomped out all of the Muslim and African nations just for the sake of his ultranationalistic pride.

For me it was more that at the end it shows that there was at least 100-200 years of peace before humanity started its wars again. At least all that bloodshed was rewarded with some peaceful times.

It was at least, at minimum, thousand of years. You can clearly see the timelapse with Mikasa getting old and dying. In the Manga, you can't clearly see that, in the Anime, you can. So it wasn't for "nothing" what Eren did, he brought at least a thousand year of peace between nations, maybe even more than that. Because we get to see all things in a futuristic manner that is even beyond the current day tech in real life.

So saying that it's bad is actually Rage? It's not peak fiction brother. That's all.
