Great details again Michael !! This is the VERY BEST song that John Lennon ever wrote & recorded !! Stunning work by all involved - especially George Martin.

I have another view of the album & single. "Strawberry Fields" should certainly have been on "Sgt Pepper" - opening side 2. This would have levelled up the Paul & John writing for the album. As at January 1967 "When I'm 64" was ready - along with "Penny Lane". These 2 should have been the single - still would have been a huge hit. And therefore take "When I'm 64" off the album.

Excellent, informative video, Michael. Coincidentally, I have also compiled my own Pepper album with the inclusion of SFF and Penny Lane, which is how I listen to the album.

I adore the Mellotron. Nearly any time it’s used judiciously, it draws me in. Maybe it’s the souls of all the dead studio musicians lol, no idea but it always makes me smile when used well and I love using it in my own music.

I agree. I think it's the greatest rock single ever produced. The only single comparable to "Strawberry Fields Forever" at the time, was The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations". Another amazing song production for its time.

I SOOO agree with you, Michael. My personal play order for Pepper places Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields between Mister Kite and Within You Without You. I then listen to the nine remaining tracks of Magical Mystery Tour with the four fresh psychedelic cuts from Yellow Submarine to complete a second 'full album' track listing. In a way, that gives me a 'double album' representing 1967!

The surreal songwriting, John's haunting vocals and George Martin's production make this such a classic masterpiece. Sir George really earned his paycheck fitting the two different tracks together.

The cut is actually explained in the Strawberry Field museum at Strawberry Field in Liverpool. The explanation of the lyrics is also a story in itself. John wrote the lyrics in Spain when filming How I Won The War. Mainly a self psycho analysis, it also talked about his childhood and the actual Strawberry Field, a children’s home near where he lived. The Lyrics No one I think is in my tree, alludes to his own way of thinking but also his favourite place to sit in SF to think. Nothing To Get Hung About, refers to him getting in trouble sometimes when he went there. So the next time he went out his Aunt Mimi would warn him not to go there and he would reply, “why not, it’s not like they’ll hang you for it”

Such a great song! Take 7 is brilliant. If the ending could have went on for a few more seconds without breaking down it would be perfect. The 'Love' version might just be my favorite version of the song because it starts with John's original presentation of the song to the band, and then includes different takee put together.

Not only were The Beatles brilliant men, they had the good fortune of being surrounded with brilliant men in recording and marketing. Had to have been the hand of God, no one is that lucky.

Micheal-I agree about adding Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane to Sgt. Pepper,. But what songs would you have cut to make room? Or would you have just made Sgt Pepper longer overall? I might have cut "Being for the benefit of Mr Kite" and "When I'm 64".
