I assume because of the genre. ScFi shows normally they dont go well. some are exception and go very well. Others not so well, and sometimes doesnt have to do with the quality. To me season 4 deserve more praise than it gets. We see a crew that spends its time zipping from spacestation to spacestation get stuck on a planet (and eventually in a prehistoric alien cave), and the writers still found a way to make it thrilling. Cibola burn (the book s4 was based on) is much less engaging than the season turned out to be. Season 4 also marked the turned in the VFX quality of the series. I particularly found the rendition of the alien ruins really impressive. Cibola burn must have been the hardest to adapt! It makes you wonder why the 3rd book (Abaddon's gate) which contained so much action got shrunk to just a few episodes.

One thing that the Expanse adaptation avoids is turning characters into easy "bad guy" vs. "good guy" simplistic takes on their behavior. While some characters are just despicable, you can still understand what their motivations are. They just don't behave in simple "evil" ways; they goals and it a questions what means to those ends they'd choose, even if you wouldn't make those choices yourself. All the characters have flaws, and that makes them really interested and fully fleshed-out. The depth of these characters are certainly there in the source material, and much of that has been pulled into the TV adaptation. I think that many people watching might not expect all the characters to be so complex, and when asked casually if so-and-so is a "bad guy", there's no simple answer. Which makes this material so good.

Indeed, for example when Miller kills the lead scientist Dresden because he was making too much sense talking about the advantages that studying the protomolecule offered humanity. Going from book to screen whether the big screen or the small screen is that things that only take a page in a book require the best part of an hour on screen so short cuts need to happen. On the flip side what takes only minutes on screen can take many pages in a book. The trick is to find a balance where the key features of the book{s) are presented without taking stupidly long times to explain them. A good adaptation will make people feel that the story was told as it should have been even with short cuts taken.

It's a fantastic adaption, though I highly disagree with the shows need to add tension and drama between the roci crew. Yeah, it can feel a bit "too good to be true" sometimes in the books, the roci crew are family though and stand by each other through their worst and best. Amos and Holden constantly on edge and the whole "just know I might have to kill you one day" thing really takes me out of it. Other than that, the show does a lot more right than it does wrong. It's not perfect by any means, but when it comes to adaptions, The Expanse is among the very best. Anyway- my random tangent aside, this was a really well made video. Subscribed.

I think starship troopers works well for what it was: it was purposedly adapted not as a direct translation but more like a parody. I have really enjoyed the series. I think it is a great example of how to do an adaptation right. I think probably my biggest complaints with the show is how they don't pronounce things the same way as Jefferson Mays does in the audiobooks. Hearing Roci and Avasarala on the show is jarring. I think of the adaptation of The Princess Bride is another example of an adaptation done right. A big part of it, like with The Expanse, is the involvement of the author. There the book and the movie are very different creatures, and both are really good in different ways. Some of the jokes in the book would not work at all on screen, and they didn't even try to do them. They replaced them with other jokes and bits. I think the book is a bit more of an acquired taste, but I really enjoy both. As an opposite example, we have Cowboy Bebop. The anime is excellent, and the live action is both too much like the anime and not enough like the anime at the same time. Ultimately I think it is a case of the live action people not understanding the source material, and making some really bad decisions. I think it would have been better as a direct beat for beat remake, but it wouldn't have gone over well. Not like it would be any worse.

Just a small gripe: Starship troopers wasn't a responce to the themes of the book, a twisting of its messages, as the director and screenwriter )/(or whatever you call the guy writing the plot) hadn't actually read the whole book, only a few chapters, because he got "bored and depressed" by it. Instead, they took a book about an idea of how to stop the people of a democratic system to become indifferent to their own power and thereby stagnating the system until it collapses through either radical leftleaning ideals or, in heinleins mind, facism taking over the state by promising easy fixes if you just give up that meaningless and useless right to vote, and turned it into: facism, isn't it funny, the movie. And while i like the film on that level, it is a) not a good representation of facism (or nazism (i'd know, i'm german)), and b) it is a rotalbastardization of the source material that doesn'teven understand the basic theory of it.

And what's with the big intros to "chapters" that are only 2 minutes long? Your title was interesting, but then you just start digressing and stop talking about what you promised. That being said, S4 was weird. It had some moments, and to be honest the book isn't the best of the bunch. We get they needed to give Bobby and Specially Khris a big arch, but needlessly reintroducing us to a rehashed husband who not only doesn't look anything like the well-cast first actor, but acts more like a completely different younger assistant/lover character, was head-scratching. And I get Jay Hernandez maybe couldn't be brought back to do Havlock, and the character also starts boring as hell, but in the end he had some pretty badass moments that could've been used in another known or mashed-up character.
