I was gonna tell you my theory on this here and say how it connects to Voldemort wanting the Philosopher's Stone in Book 1, but I figured I'd not spoil it in case you'd like to make a video about it. Could a ghost somehow "ride" someone's body after they received a dementor's kiss? Since it would be a vessel with life force but no soul and the ghost is a soul, could someone move a ghost soul into this new container? We know Voldy used the avada kedavra curse to kill and split his soul into new containers so if someone was recently kissed (murder in a sense) then could that "murder" be used to transport a ghost into a new body?

I don't like the heat vision theory. To me, it just carries so much magic, such powerful energy, enough to kill someone by basically directly affecting the soul. But when it passes through other stuff, it interacts with items it's not "meant" to, and some of that power, that energy, is then transfered to heat. The vision isn't a heat ray, it just heats up soulless objects that it interacts with. No, that's not like a laser, shut up.
@pantalonesdemuerto7960

@ crazysasha1374 Agreed. If it usually burns you to death, I feel like an indirect hit would just burn you to not quite death. My favorite plothole in Chamber of Secrets is the idea that "they needed to wait months for the Herbology Mandrakes to be ready" in order to make the potion to restore people. Why on earth wouldn't Hogwarts just buy some already mature Mandrakes to make into the potion or better yet, just buy some Madrake restorative draft already made from a potioneer or St. Mungos... With Hogwarts' resources they should have been able to revive the people within a day or two (however long it takes to find some of the potion), but instead they waited months because it would've ruined the plot to have Nick, Colin, or even Hermione (who is petrified much later) just tell them it was a giant snake
@Bobobear77
Ай бұрын
Because I'm pretty sure Mandrakes are very expensive even for one pot, so buying three would lose Hogwarts too much money, and even if they did buy fully grown Mandrakes, the students and others could just get petrified again, and Mandrakes are very rare, only being sold in the only Apothecary in all of Diagon Alley, in all of Wizarding Britain

I really like this separation of parts in the Venn diagram to explain this so well. However, I feel like one aspect is missed. The container doesn't receive lasting damage, but it is still affected. All the victims were physically petrified. I agree, it penetrates to the soul, thus Nick was affected, but, given that it also has some effect on the body, that could explain why the students needed the mandrake cure, but Nick (who doesn't have a body and can't receive a physical cure) could perhaps be cured by a spell or maybe the ill-effect could have even just worn off.
@Hannah-kx4gq

I'm more curious how they managed to unpetrify Nick afterwards. My personal theory is that the effect is only temporary on ghosts since they are already dead, meaning they can't be affected by anything of the mortal world. But because of how powerful, and dangerous a Basilisk gaze is, it is able to only temporarily petrify even ghosts.
@SeanWheeler100
4 ай бұрын
The effect wearing off at the same time the petrified students were cured? Nah, Madams Sprout and Pomfrey had to get creative with feeding Nick. @Alwarin1

I mean - nobody told that the Mandrake draught needed to be ingested for it to work (how would petrified ppl even swallow). Maybe it works as an ointment of sorts, working through skin contact. And for however my memory serves, Nick was actually solid after he got hit by basilisk, sooo… they could just splash him like all others
@SebasTian58323
4 ай бұрын
Well they were able to move the petrified Nick with a fan by fanning him in the direction they needed to move him. We also know that they can affect things because Myrtle often floods her bathroom and I'm pretty sure when she jumps into the toilets the water splashes, so non solid things like air, fire and water may be more susceptible to ghosts, so it's possible they just fanned him through the potion and that cured him.

If you recall from the duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore in the Order of the Phoenix, Avada Kedavra literally makes things explode! They both have destructive powers, and yet don’t harm their victims? Hmm, maybe Avada Kedavra is secretly just a powerful laser?
@madDjakni

Honestly I feel like while it would have been helpful for Dumbledore and/or Harry to know the monster is a Basilisk (who knows perhaps Dumbledore had already deduced as much) it would only have given more credence to the "Harry is the heir" movement as he's the only known parselmouth in school that year and the basilisk is referred to as "the king of snakes". Still it's interesting how Myrtle spends so much time in that bathroom or in the pipes and never once does she witness possessed Ginny opening the chamber or run into the basilisk as a ghost in the pipes. Of all the ghosts in the castle you'd think Myrtle would be the most likely to encounter the basilisk
@themusicalhallway3422
4 ай бұрын
Maybe Dumbledore had figured it out but didn't want to add to the pressure Harry was already feeling from his peers. That could be an additional thing that could support their theory of Dumbledore's Big Plan. Maybe she was too busy crying to pay attention? But then again, if she did see the Basilisk, she'd end up like Nick...right? Now I'm wondering, if she's dead because she looked straight in the eyes of the Basilisk, would she repeat that experience when she's a ghost as well? That would be a weird deja vu experience for her!

Well, in the films, at least we see Moaning Myrtle's corpse in a flashback, so they're not disintegrated. My guess is it's a play on the saying: "Stare into your soul" The basilisk stare is so intense, it piercers into the soul, which is why it needs eye contact. Eyes are the window into the soul. This kills you, because while you're soul is paralysed, your body dies. Then when your soul is eventually unparalysed, it has no body to return to, making the victim a ghost

This would mean that Moaning Myrtle would not have been killed by the Basilisk, but rather by young Tom Riddle after the Basilisk petrified her. This also explains how she could be used for a Horcrux too. It would be much more poetic to think that it was simply unable to kill versus everyone just getting lucky. Thoughts?

I know the book just labeled Nick as petrified. Black and smoky. Nick got the full blast. The movie provided a better visual. Nick is a ghost because he is afraid of death. He fears moving on. Is his status actually the physical manifestation of a spirit in limbo. He is dead. The eyes of the basilisk kill their victim. The effect is instant. He was rendered immobile and burnt. Whatever makes up his astral form. The visible manifestation was damaged. For an entity that fears death. His vessel/form broke. He may have temporarily been stuck in limbo as he was forced to enter the doors of something Nickolas had fully rejected. Until his ghostly vessel was restored Nick would remain immobile. A form of artificial death.

Amazing. Some inspired ideas: I'd think that ghosts do have a container: ectoplasm. Ghosts do affect the physical world in HP universe: Binns picks up books and they leave cold-feelings in bodies they pass through. It's limited, but it's there so that's an argument for a container/physical body of sorts. The souls have left, so there is no thinker behind a ghost's eyes who can adapt to situations and learn things. But the 'imprint' left behind, aka ectoplasm, which is similar to the memory liquid used in pensieves, seems capable of remembering how they were in life and endlessly executes the same personality till the end of time. Quick question: do you think a basilisk gaze can destroy a horcrux? We know that its venom can, but the venom is more like just a powerful enough corrosive with no (easy) counter; its more of a high tier poison. If the basilisk gaze can truly affect souls directly, and since they'll heat up the container and possibly destroy it too, will they be able to, on will, just off horcruxes?

Remember a line in the Monster Hunter International series where a ghost told the main character that even spirits and ghosts have matter. It’s just finer.

The real question is how do you give them the remedy for being petrified???

There is an inconsistence in this division of life elements - the Avada Kedavra. when used on Riddle family, doesn't harm their bodies. But the same Avada Kedavra, when deflected on Voldemort in book one, causes his body to be destroyed - it would mean that the same spell/power would affect different part of "life" from usage to usage.

Maybe his body was destroyed because his soul is weakened by being divided in so many horcruxes already.

a bigger question I have is if the basilisk initially petrified you why would the basilisk not spend an extra 3 seconds to look at the now petrified person again. Except for I think it's colin who had the camera up to his face I feel like these could have easily been kills. Also it's weird because if they hadn't even bothered with the basilisk I think Tom riddle might have gotten Jenny down to the chamber and come back without the team figuring out where the chamber was. and when all you gained was 3 people who were petrified I don't see why he used it.

Hmm great question - i guess maybe if you are petrified you can't make eye contact because your eyes arent really working . MY question is why doesnt he just kill them with his teeth or venom or any other way 😂
@user-vx7do5sr5q

@@SuperCarlinBrothers because I think that the basilisk is not actively trying to kill them, I think that he is mainly trying to scare them. of course if they end up dead he is not going to care but is not the main goal. Otherwise he'll just eat them hole after he petrifies them, he must be hungry after all those years in hibernation.

@@SuperCarlinBrothers Because that would've been too obvious. Riddle doesn't want the Basilisk to be found. Venom would've been traceable.

The basilisk always reminded me of Medusa… except unlike Medusa, the basilisk’s stare apparently has no effect once he’s dead, and with Medusa, it’s safe to look at her in a reflection. I wonder what would happen if a ghost looked at Medusa. 😄

So, to complete the Venn diagram: Container only = corpse Soul only = ghost Life force only = ??? Someone not yet born, perhaps? Container + Soul = horcrux Container + Life Force = someone who has been dementor-kissed Soul + Life Force = Voldemort's spirit, or anyone else who has their body destroyed without dying? How exactly does that happen? All three = normal living person None = nothing But if Avada Kedavra is like a basilisk's gaze - only destroying the soul, while leaving the body intact - then why was Voldy's body destroyed when the AK rebounded on him?

Hmmm... and what about the "living" portraits and photographs? They aren't alive, so they don't actually have a soul, but they might have some semblance of a life force, since they can interact with people and move. And the physical picture counts as a container of sorts, I guess. But it's not quite a container since they can leave their picture frame and go into a different one. So maybe they are life-force only.

This would raise a few questions: -What would have happened if Nearly-Headless Nick had looked the Basilisk in the eyes himself? If it attacks souls would that mean he would be destroyed? But if it fully destroyed souls how is Myrtle's ghost still around? This raises the question of how exactly the stare kills a living person, to begin with. My theory is that the stare of a Basilisk actually doesn't do any damage at all, even to the spirit. Perhaps it merely petrifies the soul and separates it from the body? This would essentially push the soul out of the body and leave the body to die, similar to how too many Dementor kisses leave you as an empty husk. Perhaps it is possible to keep a husk alive, but given the lack of will and likely immediate shock to the system, I could see this either leaving a person a vegetable if not killing them outright on the spot (especially for a young girl like Myrtle). This would explain why only catching a glimpse of the Basilisk petrifies you. Your soul is petrified but not separated from your body, so long as you can un-petrify the soul the body should snap back to normal.

I've always wondered - what if the reason nobody died was because Riddle was acting through Ginny, and since her heart wasn't in it, she was somehow resisting his wishes a little subconsciously? We do know she goes on to become a pretty formidable witch

But Ginny herself didn't cause any direct harm.... she opened the chamber, she didn't control the Basalisk.

That's an interesting thought. I've always interpreted it as Ginny being the one to initially be possessed by Riddle and controlling the basilisk (you do need parseltongue to open the chamber, same as controlling the basilisk). The reason we see Riddle doing it on his own when Harry meets him is because he has absorbed enough of Ginny's life force to do so by that point. Without it he needed to act through someone.

⚠️Off topic from video, day five of asking for what ifs⚠️ 1: What if Dudley went to Hogwarts? I think he'd be a Hufflepuff and be pretty good at defense against the dark arts and I think it would be fun to have him be good at divination cause none of the golden trio are good at or even seem to respect it. 2: What if Aang died with the other Air nomads and one of the other main characters eventually became the Avatar? I think the most interesting would be Sokka and Zuko. 3: What if Prim became the Mockingjay? The only way I see this happening is if Katniss gets caught hunting and either gets killed or sent to the Capital and becomes an avox, a year or two before Prims game so she gets some survival skills not as good as Katniss but better than nothing.

I have a question... do any of y'all think a container and life force that lost its soul (like Barty Crouch Jr) could essentially live again if a soul or soul fragment was placed inside of it? So if say Bellatrix learned how to fragment her soul and turned him into a horcrux? And if so, would Barty be himself or more like Bellatrix or both?

New question: why is moaning myrtle always sad/crying? Why is that her one characteristic? Do all ghosts just have 1 quirk or personality (like from moment of their death) that they always display?
