As I recalled, the debt was mainly used to pay EU spending and Greece had to borrow money to meet their EU obligations.

Governments should not be allowed to borrow from outside financial institutions, likewise for treaty membership, without a vote by the citizens.

Greek here. Greece trapped itself by borrowing heavily in the 2000s while benefiting from very low interest rates (same as Germany). That money were used for the noble reason of bribing the voters (more public servants, higher salaries and pensions) while not doing much for the real economy. When it was discovered that Greece had 'cooked' its books and had higher liabilities than they claimed, the interest rates shot up to 30%, thus making servicing the debt unsustainable. Sure, the IMF looked after the international banks rather than the wellbeing of the Greek people, but I can assure you the Greek politicians did not have the Greek citizens' wellbeing in mind either. The Greek public has been voting for socialist governments for too long and now they are paying the price. In any case, I am not buying the premise that this is the fault of international institutions.

Excellent content here. Your thoughts regarding the true nature of the IMF were particularly enjoyable, if a little graphic! To your list of useful voices on this and related topics I would add Michael Hudson and Radhika Desai. Ben Norton produces their joint channel, 'Geopolitical Economy Report', also available on KZitem.

Would this have happened under a Monarchy? Maybe but less likely as power is passed down through family lines. There is more accountability.

@@allykhan8594 people doing it to themselves ...that is an easy go to when it defaults...then it's too late...loaning money that the lender knows the borrower will not be able to pay back this is called predatory lending...by your comment it appears you have never been desperate...desperate ppl do desperate actions...the person behind the 8 ball has no choice ...the lender is not helpful when the goal is to bankrupt the borrower just to resell what the last one lost Not to mention the interest because you are a risk...the lender loses nothing because the principle was paid back hidden in interest and fees...ppl don't do fucked up shit to themselves if there are other avenues

@@HomelessRomantic no doubt, but predatory lenders are an unfortunate reality. You can neither pretend they don’t exist nor can you rely too much on institutional solutions for these assholes. It’s either ineffective, stifles honest lending, and generally suffered diminishing returns on effect quickly. Leaders give into short term pressure from their constituents and crack. Unfortunately, discipline is not something that cannot be manufactured and traded.
