Falsification of history in Russia is criminally punishable. For an inaccurate statement about the role of the USSR in World War II one can go to jail for several years. Officials and law enforcement agencies suppress any attempt to deviate from the authorities' line of interpretation of national history. At the same time the Kremlin itself regularly twists the facts and distorts history as it wants. Even worse, unscientific lies are now pouring out not only from TV, but also from the textbooks recommended by the Ministry of Education. Pavel Kanygin explains why the Russian government is fighting so furiously for its version of history and why it is dangerous.
