This series has sufferred the same failing and sickness of other programmes. Yes I do realise that this is an imaginary survivalist disaster scenario. And its fantasy, yes I get that. But you have to have some realism as to how would people really act. How many times have you seen tv series, movies etc. Where a situation has arisen where lightly and poorly armed individuals who have been constantly defenceless because they have not had weapons available to them. Suddenly in a position to be able to pick up good quality automatic weapons. Even with suppressors and bucket loads of ammo. But what do they do? They trot off, do not pick up any of what would be a massive benefit to them. Instead they stick with low capacity revolver. A single shot hunting rifle which may be advantageous to have in some situations. But at least one automatic weapon between them. With a few mags and a few spare rounds would I am sure be seen to be a massive advantage to have. But no, what do they do. They go dondering off, taking nothing with them. We see zero effort by them to have packs with gear to protect them from the elements. Nothing to heat anything up with. Just a small holdall. Those that write these stories have to inject some realism into these programmes in that what would people REALLY do if they were forced to try and survive travelling over a very long distance mainly on foot? Why do we see zero scavenging? There would be more of a story line sometimes even if they spent an hour with them doing all the prep work and planning

YES! Yes Joel is a bit of a Terminator in the game (although that depends on difficulty, playing on Grounded is a lot more realistic) but you have to gather and manage resources, conserve ammunition, craft things, use stealth and everything in your arsenal to overcome enemies. In the show it feels like they just get lucky travelling across the entire country and only coming across a few people. Even when they adapt an action sequence from the game like the car crash in the city or escaping the university lab, or even fighting the horde of infected with David, it all adds to the intensity and brutality of the world and how it forces you to trust eachother and use your instincts, but in the show it's either completely removed or Joel just fights one guy instead of a group, or they don't even show them getting shot. There are so few momente of gore and horror that it feels like it's got the child filter on a is PG13

Great video! People complaining about the lack of violence/reduction of infected compared to the games fail to see that it all serves a greater narrative purpose, one that better fits a tv show format than a game format. The world is still shown to be just as dangerous and sad, but the characters don't have superhuman strength or abilities like in the games. It's about the emotions behind the violence; the humanity, selfishness, and the lengths people are willing to go to protect the ones they care for. But at the same time, violence isn't inconsequential.

@@drawfull ohhh yeah. that’s been one of the main things that other gamers are complaining abt and say makes the show “not good”. Which is ridiculous bc a show doesn’t need to focus on constant action scenes if they want to show that the story is more abt the human characters, their motivations to live, and the world building. And the games already exist, so ppl can just replay the games if they want straight-up action with 3 minute cutscenes spliced in between.

As someone who legitimately thinks that The Last of Us Part 2 is the greatest story ever told... I really hated this show. Just a poor imitation in every way. They spend the entire season looking for a cure for a disease that seems hardly relevant at all. The show feels like a generic post apocalypse show without any tension or thrills that are essential to the story and worldbuilding. The violence is needed, it serves the story and characters. They ruined Joel here as he opens up way too fast to the point where his arc has zero zero weight. The pacing is awful. Just a terrible show in my opinion.

the show was fine but I did not find that it did anything that the first several seasons of the walking dead didn't. All those themes about humanity and caring for children and adopted children were there too (early seasons i mean, as i stopped watching later ones). You could literally call it The walking dead and change the zombies and it'd fit. its not bad but i didn't feel it was particularly special.

@chipsalom

Well to be honest, one thing it'll be forever remembered for us being the first really well received video game adaptation that walked a decent balance between some changes, and literal scene and dialogue recreations. I agree with the emotional connection bit. It managed to squeeze through for me primarily because I had a pre existing connection from playing the game, but looking at it absent that, I find a lot of necessary connective pieces in any bond between them missing. Imo it woulda served the show well to have held off on the Riley episode in favor of more building between Joel and Ellie, or just added an episode dedicated purely to THEM and the missing months in their journey most don't even realize happened (I've seen many ppl not recognize that between the David episode and the finale, a large amount of time passed, as well as just prior to reaching Jackson. For some of the shows weaknesses, I am pretty certain it won't be forgotten, much the same as Battlestar Galactica the original isn't forgotten, nor is the reboot, in SPITE of being just another TV show.

@@chipsalom I feel like we needed the Riley episode to have anyone watching the show, without prior knowledge of the game, connect better to Ellie. We get introduced to a different, romantic side of her, something that will later will be important in S2 because of the second game. The same way we have moments alone with Joel and Tess to explore their relationship. In order to do that, you need to get into the cracks of what is important to them and show that. I believe that yes, it isn't a groundbreaking TV show, but it's also never claimed to be. People love the game, and now the show, because they love the characters and the relationships they have with one another. It is a really big pioneer of doing adaptations correctly, and hopefully we can see it become a bar to hold other adaptations to.

A solid if flawed Tv adaption of an Iconic Masterpiece game, not entirely happy with the casting decisions regarding the two lead actors, too many compromises and bad creative decisions have marred this potentially brilliant story, too few episodes and some annoying changes, but some strong episodes also, if flawed. This is such a beloved, prized and cherished game the tv series had a lot to live up to, it fell short but as a whole it translated some of the power of the game but could have been so much more powerful and intense with some better choices. 6-1/2 --7/10 only.

2:40 . This is the part that so many modern screenwriters keep screwing up horribly. They don't love the properties they are working with/on. They don't love the characters, the story, the setting, and feel this need to 'change' it to fit their ideas of 'better'. They need to inherently understand WHY people are fans and not just assume they'll approve of it strictly by name alone.

I mainly just had an issue with the show's compulsive need to explain everything when the game still maintained an air of mystery to it. We didn't need specific scientific context on how the Cordyceps mutated and spread because it changes nothing about the story other than that it happened. Having the mystery about what exactly happened keeps the world fresh and engaging, but providing lengthy and detailed explanations on not just lore, but on characters' emotions and thoughts that was always at a more implicit level. The show had a tendency to spoonfeed the audience, such as the scene where Joel breaks down in front of Tommy telling him he's afraid of repeating what happened with Sarah. While it's a greatly acted scene by Pascal, my main issue is that it explains what the audience already knows and doesn't leave room for implication or subtlety. The scene in the game where Tommy sees Joel fretting over Ellie is one of the most compelling in my opinion, because he sees them and how they interact with each other and he knows that what they have is what Joel previously had with Sarah. Instead of Joel TELLING him he's afraid and begging him to take Ellie, Tommy can SEE with his own eyes what's going on with Joel and he makes the choice that he should be the one to take Ellie to the Fireflies. I sorta blame Craig Mazin for this because I know that exposition dialogue is one of his hallmarks, particularly with Chernobyl. Biggest difference was that in the context of that show it was used to help audiences further understand workings of physics and politics the casual viewer may not understand, but at the same time did not insult the audience's intelligence and assumed they knew nothing. It was a great tool of education so that people could watch and understand the full scope of the Chernobyl tragedy and the science behind it. Problem is, TLOU is a post-apocalyptic drama based on a video game, not a real-life nuclear catastrophe that destroyed thousands of lives. We don't need things wrapped up in a neat bow for us to understand and enjoy.
