One of the best explanation about how the Bing carburetor works I have seen. Text in the Bing manual and other sources are terrific to give a base knowledge but the video really makes it click.Thank you for this series of video. Very timely as the winter season is a great time to clean all this stuff up! We need a video about how you adjust the carbs when your restoration is over. Thanks! Thierry

Thank you for this very educational, understandable and interesting tutorial on the Bing CV carburetor. I am an old BMW Airhead and this is the best. The complexities of this carburetor make me understand why electronic fuel injection was invented :) Thanks again.

Hello...our airplane with a rotax engine uses 2 Bing carbs on a rotax 912UL engine 4 stroke. These videos of yours are great. I have a question... the 8 plugs on this dual magneto engjne carbon up immediately from new. The carbs have been cleaned and balanced with new main jets but no change. Still rich. Does the needle and needle jet wear at all? Should i look at relpacing them as well?

David, I know that Bing supplies carbs for aircraft use, but I didn't think they are the same design as for the motorcycles due to the differences in engine use between airplanes and motorcycles. To your question about wear of the jet needles and needle jets, yes they do wear due to vibration. I always replace both when I rebuild the carburetors. When I flew, the airplane had a manual choke and fuel mixture control so I could lean it out at altitude. I assume yours has a similar arrangement. If so, is the mixture control working correctly?

At the 3:04 minute mark you discuss what you call the "top part that goes around the needle jet". Do you happen to know what the exact name of this part is, or how I can order that? It is missing from my motorcycle (bought second hand) and I have been searching mindlessly and can't figure out what it's called or how to purchase it without having to purchase a whole new carburetor.

Alaa, it's called a "pre-atomizer", part# 13 11 1 260 973. You can get it from any BMW motorcycle dealer, The Bing Agency in the USA, or from Euro MotoElectrics (www.euromotoelectrics.com).

Hi Brook, thank you, very clear. I am having some issues between 2,000-2,250 RPM with the engine coughing and being a bit rough. Is the idle circuit or the main + needle jet circuit?...or both?
@BrooksAirheadGarage

Francesco, it could be the needle jet and jet needle are worn which enriches the mixture. It could be the ignition timing advance is not advancing correctly. It could be the valves need adjusting as they may have closed up.

When I cleaned the carb I forgot to clean the jet needle but it didn’t seem dirty. Is there inside parts that could be dirt
@BrooksAirheadGarage
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tyler, There are passages in the body of the carburetor that can get gummed up, particularly if you leave fuel with ethanol in the carb for several months, like happens when folks park the bike for the winter but don't drain the fuel out of the float bowls. Typically the jet needle does not need cleaning. The needle jet may need it. And, after 30-40,000 miles or so, both may need to be replaced due to how vibration of the needle can change the diameter of the needle and the jet which makes the engine run too rich.

3:25 Never knew about that "needle" jet on top of the main jet. They always say the Main jet and pilot jet. I took mine apart and while i THOUGHT it was clogged and use thin wire to "clean" it out and put her back together, she still sputters once i start to accelerate while idle is perfect. Now you show that little piece "top part above the needle jet" that has those 2 holes and the chamber than runs thru the inside of the carb housing to help air flow thru to help suck up more fuel ... i had NO idea that was there and if that passage is clogged or that piece with the 2 holes is clogged, that would def cause issues once i start to give it throttle ... Funny how i have watched NUMEROUS videos about cleaning bars and NOT ONE single video showed what you just showed ...

I just changed my diaphragm upon first installation the needle was way too short. The bike ran initially but then slowly died and now won't start. Is it possible that a too short needle can flood out the bike?

Recently had my bing carbs rebuilt for my r90/6 but the guy doing them said that the right carbs main jet is frozen into the carb body and he was unable to remove it. Any suggestions or do I need to get a new carb?
@BrooksAirheadGarage

Roger, I've not had that problem before. I would try Kroil penetrating oil and some heat to see if that will get the jet to turn. That said, the carbs are made out of "pot metal" which is mostly Zinc. You do not want to over heat the material around the main jet or you could melt it. I'd try a heat gun, not a propane torch. If it still won't budge, call the Bing Agency [(800) 309-2464] and see if they are willing to try and get it free for you if you send it to them.

I'm a little late to the party but I was wondering if the individual floats that slide on the guide can be replaced by the 1 piece unit in this video? I'm rebuilding some customers Bing CVs for his 80s R100 BMW and the floats don't . . . float. :|
@BrooksAirheadGarage

Justin, In fact, the floats I use are the stock BING floats. BING also offers ethanol "resistant" floats that have two halves. I don't use them. I've heard folks comment that the resistant floats have some issues in operation. I typically rebuild these carburetors every 6-7 years anyway.

how many shims can you put on the needle jet untill you have to buy a smaller diameter one
@BrooksAirheadGarage

Mike, there are no shims used or available. You replace the jet and the needle at the same time. They wear due to vibration. Expect about 60,000 miles from a set.

I have 1980 GS1000 BS34 CV Carbs the needle valve has 3 washers on it . no adjustment, stock it had a plastic washer but to richen it up I replaced it with the washers. after 4 into 1 header and pods the mid range is Blaaaa so I thought raising the needle with more washers might help get more fuel there. I increased the main jet size, dang I can't remember how big.
