while discussing with friends I used to say in similar lines.. That - the top 1-10% will be selfish when it comes to Law, Society etc.. The poor - the larger population - neither has the awareness or the time to think about all these social factors. Its the Middle Class as a whole, and their willingness to speakup / demand / participate in India and its politics that will decide future of India.. If WE do not, the top 10% will continue to benifit and another 1-10% from among us will stand out, benifit and move into the top 10%...

Indian middleclass is the most exploited one in the world . All laws , taxation and reforms target and squeeze every penny from middle class. Even though they are the most contributors to public funds and tax in turn they don’t get any extra in education , health or welfare. For winning elections all parties will romanticise and appease “ the privileged poor” . And all parties are successful in dividing and manipulating the middle class by selling caste creed religion stuff so that they won’t discuss the real issue . But India’s strength is it’s middle class . Middle class ambition and purchasing power can only make our country a superpower but the successive govts are finding new ways to bled them dry. Middle class should try to dream beyond this stupid socialist casteist religious utopia and get settled in other countries . And contributes to that countries that values them . So that this ultra rich and privileged poor cannot have all this welfare on our expense.

Nearly 50% of India's workforce is involved in agriculture which is a sign of a primitive economy. India will need to industrialize to shift it's agricultural workers to more productive occupations. It remains to be be seen if India is capable of making the tough policy changes required but based on the government's show of weakness on the recent farm laws, things don't look promising.

Very informative! I’ve also seen the frugality of my grandparents’ and parents’ generation even if they were relatively well off. In Kerala at least a major factor changing living standards of a huge section of society was the Gulf boom and workers’ migration and now increasingly workers sending those remittances from the Gulf are from states like UP and Bihar. I do believe migration of people (both white and white blue collar workers) abroad and the money they send back to their families plus their own consumption of goods and services and investments in India in turn will further add new numbers to the Indian middle class. Many in the gulf lost their jobs during the pandemic but am positive the job market will pick up again soon as covid numbers decline.

I think your views are fairly balanced that means neither left leaning and nor right leaning. I think the rising middle class in India was living in a large economic bubble which burst during the pandemic. By economic bubble I mean most living off credit cards and personal loans. That explains th dip in the growth as per what you displayed on the graph.
@freishia

The dip was also major job losses . But yes a lot of people depend on credit cards and loans to maintain a certain lifestyle

I am very very strongly against middle class as the population of middle class in democratic countries swell such as in USA and non democratic countries like China's the linear nature of consumption in a rate it had never seen before and which is impossible to sustain with the only earth we got and due to thier large size it is more difficult to apply the reform in democracy and due to so called "innovation" from incomplete knowledge gave us innovative problem like hole in ozone layer due to excessive use of CfC's in refrigerator which are mainly owned by middle class . The middle class is not bad but they certainly have bad consequences as they can be the key to extinction of human on (sur)face of Earth.(pun intended)

Rather than dividing on the basis of economy, better to divide on the basis of comfort zone.. I have seen many who belong to middle class but don't demand govt for equality. Rather they chose comfort zone in the name of reservation for jobs and degrees. Another set also remains in comfort zone doing lucrative business. They have education, degree.. But their decisions are based on monetary gains whether education or marriage.. They created a all new materialstic world without a clean conscience. In fact they shattered law and order and created insecure youth. So.. 99% whether rich, poor or middle class.. are living in their comfort zone... Either robbing or stealing others opportunities.. No self respect..

By my definition of middle-class, its the government employees and unorganized sector. Things look very bad for government employees and unorganized employees of private sector. PSUs are our last hope and "Make in India" is the last hope for an industrious India. Pensioners are at serious risk, their health care facilities like CGHS are a shame on the central government.
