My goodness, I get so happy every single time I seem something new pop up with Dr Collins! I have watched practically everything on YT with his name attached to it, most of them more than once, including his Hebrew Bible lectures on the Yale Divinity School channel. The guy's a treasure! And this talk was wonderful, thank you!!!

He's wrong about Hanukah. The book of Maccabees is not related to Hanukkah which was set up to the remember the oil in the temple lasting miraculously for 8 days. The book of Macabbees talks about military battles.

There is no such thing as "scripture" in Judaism. The speaker mixes up.Christisn ideas with Judaism.

This speaker makes up a lot of stuff. "Slavery" in the Tenach is not slavery in the sense it was in Ottoman times or 19th cent USA. Plus the Caananites etc were not "exterminated". If they allowed the Israelites to rule over them they were spared. They would not be allowed to engage in child sacrifice or other idolatrous practices which the Israelites found abhorrent but they could live peacefully in the land. Also they could join the nation of Israel as converts and would be treated the same as native Israelites. Lots of assertions but little specific evidence to back it up.

I think the best part was the end when the discussion turned to authority and inspiration. I would agree with Dr. Collins that the bible becomes more interesting when you "get it out of your system" that it has to be right about everything. (46:30)
