Don’t go through the BP with your chargers. Have the BP only between the output and the battery. Normally, we put the BP between the battery bank and the DC fuse block. Can the Victron Battery Protect (220 amp) serve as a battery isolator? I have installed a 1000 watt inverter in the trunk of my 2021 Toyota Camry SE with a 1/0 gauge wire run to the starting battery, which is a typical lead acid battery. The negative terminal of the inverter is connected to ground. I also have a 100 amp-hour LiFePO4 battery located in the trunk also connected to the inverter through an Anderson SB50 connector cable using 4 gauge wire. While the engine is running, I want to be able to recharge the LiFePO4 battery. But, when the engine is not running, I want the starting battery to be disconnected, leaving only the LiFePO4 battery connected. So, will the 220 amp Victron Battery Protect device work for this purpose? Thanks!

A Battery Protect wouldn’t be a good device for what you are wanting to accomplish. It might allow for too much current flow to your lithium battery and you might get backwards current flow from the lithium battery, which would ruin the BP. I recommend a Victron Orion 30A DC/DC charger instead.

To prevent your loads from drawing down your battery too deeply, put the BP between your loads and the battery, similar to how we have it in this kit: amsolar.com/rv-battery-accessories/98-dcdagm Make sure you select a unit that can handle the current you need. For example, don’t get a 65A BP and expect to run levelers. Also, make sure you don’t have a charging current going into the batteries through the BP. Current can only flow one way in a BP, not both.

@GarretTowneAMS

If I used one, it would be between your battery and your DC loads. The rating depends on how much current you need to draw for the loads. The battery can probably put out 100A, so a BP100 would make sense, but people rarely need that much current, and typically use a BP65. If it is disconnected, it won’t draw anything.

Can the BP be controlled by a BMV 712? I want to be able to protect overcharge and overdischarge by disconnecting all loads and charge. Secondly, what happens if more current is fed than it is rated for, does it burn out and get damaged or does it disconnect load before getting damage. Lastly, is it installed only on positive side, is there ever a reason to install on negative side?
@GarretTowneAMS
5 жыл бұрын
firpofutbol One important thing to consider is that a BP is a MOSFET and you only want to install them in parts of a system where current will flow in one direction. If you send current the wrong way on a BP you will damage it. In other words, don’t expect one BP to handle loads and charging sources. Controlling a BP like a switch with the programmable relay on a BMV-712 is very common. A BP would be damaged if you ran too much current through it. Since electrons travel in loops, there is no reason you can’t install a correctly oriented BP on the negative side, but there’s no reason you would have to either. I recommend keeping with convention and putting them on the positive. It will make deciphering how your system works easier for any future owners. If you draw up a design and want a sanity check, email it to AM Solar.

@@GarretTowneAMS Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know. I wish Victron made a Cyrix with unidirectional sensing. I already have one Cyrix Li-Ct in my system, but when the vehicle is off, it senses enough voltage off my Battle-Born Lithium to stay closed until the Lithium has been partially depleted by the Starter battery. Thus I use my BMV relay to open the Cyrix at low starter voltage. But I would also like to open the Cyrix at high SOC to avoid over-absorption. I am trying to figure out if I can get the relay logic to work with both parameters: [low starter V OR High SOC opens relay/ High Starter V AND Low SOC closes relay]. Battleborn lists 99% charged as 13.4 and their tables show it would not hit the Li-CT's initial relay opening threshold of ...13.3V - until lithium drops to 90% charge. Have you not seen that in practice? Do they open right away after Starter battery drops or do they stay closed until the lithium drops to 13.3 after shutting down vehicle ? I need to do some more tests myself. It's only an issue when there's a full charge on the litihium and I only tested it once before deciding that I couldn't depend on the Cyrix Li-CT's voltage sensing and needed to rely solely on the BMS to manage it.
