We have covered many videos before about how to mobilize the thoracic region, but we have not fully explained just exactly why this area easily becomes stiff and rigid, and also how it can create a massive chain reaction of problems to other joints in the body.
Along with the hips, I would rate the thoracic region as the 2 biggest areas to focus on with regards to mobilizing and looking for where the source of pain is coming from.
Both of these joints require huge degree of mobility, but both are very prone to stiffness that then force the body to compensate and find movement somewhere else. It is when this happens that you are now one step closer to creating pain.
Make sure you get a copy of our Shoulder Pain Report that goes into great detail about this and provides stacks of exercises, with links to videos, instructions and also step by step programs to guide you on how to regain mobility and stability.

I like to refer to the thoracic as almost an undercover agent or spy in that it causes so many problems, yet it is rarely treated or even considered as a potential problem.
I will explain why.
The thoracic spine is predominately required to provide extension and rotation. The lumbar spine cannot rotate but will often be forced to if they thoracic is stiff. For example a golfer who has back pain you will find very rigid in the thoracic. He cannot find the rotation for the swing in his thoracic so he compensates at the lower back to complete his swing.
Another example is a person with shoulder and neck pain gets treatment around the area in pain, but the problem is the arm is smashing all the tendons and ligaments because the thoracic spine did not provide enough extension. If you don't get shoulder pain you probably would have got low back pain instead as this joint compensates to provide more extension!
If you look above or below the thoracic you will find pain if there is a loss of either rotation or extension.

What about causes of thoracic dysfunction?
There is many things to consider
1. Sitting
2. Training techniques
3. Breathing
4. Poor stretching routines
5. Previous injuries
All of these are potential factors in creating thoracic stiffness, but like I said earlier the biggest problem is the fact it goes UNTREATED and learns to stay stiff and create faulty movement programs with this stiffness.
I can 100% guarantee that anyone coming to see me for help with a neck or shoulder injury has something going at the thoracic. And that is the same for back problems.
But what about knee and feet?
Well believe it or not in some cases this is a factor. Often it was the weak feet that created the stiffness, as the person learns to walk inefficiently that greatly affects how they rotate the thorax in the gait pattern. It may not have started the problem but it will now strengthen the faulty movement and in combination with the foot problem begin to force instability at the lumbar spine and the knees!
So it is critical you evaluate your ability to extend and rotate and use exercises to ensure it remains with full mobility. This will prevent further dysfunction and allow you to effectively stabilize other joints and remain pain free and strong.
