I used a 5/8” hose on front filter to easily direct fuel to spill into catch can. You will see the opening from underneath, above front axle if you have a 4X4. You can also use a big funnel for rear filter to direct spilled diesel into a container.

Great video, my first time changing it myself on a 2021 RAM 2500. Thank you for taking the time to help us out. I do need to find some better ways to keep the diesel from spilling. I don’t like the mess it creates in my driveway. My only suggestion was on the rear filter replacement…push the new filter in place first (it will stay there) and then put the cap on and twist. It’s much harder to put both in at the same time as the filter needs to sit in there properly. Worked great for me 😎

Unrelated but related question. I just bought a 2020 with 31k. Drove it approximately 1000 to 1200 miles since I owned it (only been 3 weeks) and I have already gone thru 1/2 tank of DEF. I'm also only getting 18mpg at 73mpg. (373 gears). Is that normal? (Which is why I'm watching this video I'm wondering if the fuel filters/air filters are dirty)
@IManOPERATOR
6 ай бұрын
You’re just fine with the truck. Seems completely typical def usage and fuel mileage you’re doing better than myself. If you tow you do use more def. If you’re really wondering on your filters there’s no harm in getting your rear filter swapped out. You could just open and look at it however don’t let the o ring split if you don’t have a spare one.

My husband and I just bought a 2020 Ram 2500 Diesel. We are at the point where it is time for us to take it in for an oil change, and what people are quoting us for the 2 filter changes is ridiculous! If you will crack that drain again. As soon as you see a drop of diesel come out around the housing. That will drain the rest of the fuel. It will not drain it all the first round. As it catch get a breath of air. That will let it finish. Also a drain hose on the drain nipple keeps the fuel from making a mess also.

I change oil (and oil filter) every 5K miles and 15K on the fuel filters. The secondary filter (under the hood) is always clean. What are your thoughts on only changing the secondary filter at 30K ? I'm on my 4th diesel pickup and have always changed the oil at 5K and fuel filters when suggested by Dodge (Ram). Still have my 2004 2500 and 2019 2500. I'm 74 and have never had anyone else service my vehicles. Saved a wheelbarrow full of $ by doing my own. TT
@IManOPERATOR
Жыл бұрын
So in my experience and opinion, you’re changing your oil way to soon and it’s probably not necessary. Don’t get me wrong if anything you’re not hurting anything but I’ve sent in an oil sample on a few rigs before at 10k change and they are well with in limits of the oils structure and lubricity. The fuel filters i get it, I changed them out just not to long ago, rear filter was quite dirty no doubt and the front as usual was still clean in my eyes. I feel it probably wouldn’t harm changing the secondary filter every other change but going 30k I’m not so sure. I will in good time change out the rest Filter with an adapter system for cat filters to have first and secondary filters under the bed even with that. If I remember right they recommended to change the front filter every other fuel filter change. And man no doubt on saving a load of money doing your own maintenance. And me personally I’ve always enjoyed this stuff.

Great video.. Just a note, get some dielectric grease and coat your O-rings, they will go in smooth and you will get a better "feel" for the torque.. The fuel makes the O-rings make that awful noise and cause them to shudder as you tighten, the grease will stop that... Also if you unplug any electrical plugs, put some of that grease in there too, it will prevent them from corroding and make them easier to unplug as well.. Nice truck BTW....

You have no idea how much this helped me. I couldn’t tell from the video what you were doing with the upper filter as well as I could the lower filter. I took my new 2021 ram 2500 to the dealership in which I purchased a $6200 service/extended warranty on it yet when I brought it in for my first service at 7500 miles they wanted to charge me $420 plus tax I assume just to change the fuel filter. I am mediately pitched a fit and had them cancel the service policy where they were going to maintain my truck for seven years or 84 months. They knowingly miss lead or said they forgot to tell me that the fuel filter wasn’t covered so it would’ve been 420+ tax every service in addition to the $6200 plan that I had purchased and I thought that was crappy of them to do with me that way. Thanks for the video and the tips

Thats another reason to keep my 4th gen for sure Why do they have to replace the spin on filter for that plastic housing in the back as well … 🤦♂️ Thats double of the stupid unnecessary existing work on the previous ram generations If it wouldn’t be for the Cummins motor they will not sell a truck to anybody This is more like bring back it to me I ll charge you a legs for that lolo job Any ways Good vid brother its feel nice to work on your truck isnt it ? not only for the money saved just for the piece of mine you took the time and know about it more when you depend on your stuff 💪👈

I am going to retire and going to pull a 5th wheel around the country and getting myself lined up to do this while on the road. Very helpful and thank you.

I nusr bought my first dodge/ram product 2 months ago..nicest truck I've ever had, but why the hell do the engineers always design things to be way more difficult than they need to be, and then the car manufacturer actually builds it?? Where is common sense????? Also..a tube of white grease goes a long way on those O-rings
@IManOPERATOR

@@danielwood1894 just remember cummins motors are not only in trucks like a power stroke or a duramax. They don’t change locations for trucks, like my chipper has a 6.7L cummins in it and the fuel and oil filters are right there where they need to be to Service the motor.

@@IManOPERATOR true, however my buddy has a 2021 3500 flat bed duallie and the fuel sep is right there on the frame rail under the rear B pillar..why not do that for the 2500 as well instead of directly over the drive shaft? And you cant get the fuel filter out of the housing under the intake without knocking all the dirt on the wiring harness into the bowl...it didn't have to be that way

Good video, first time change for me. My last Ram only had one filter and it wasn't plastic like these. I broke the valve 8mm nut off trying to get it to open and drain. Had about 3/8 of a turn so it was a slow drip. Ordered extra online. No on within 2 hours of Charlotte NC had the valve. Went to Gastonia Dodge they had the whole cap with the valve in it, $79.85. So, with the spare cap and the soon to arrive bleeder valves I should be okay. As soon as I saw the first video and how the whole canister flexed and twisted, and the effort put in to make it turn, I figured the I'd be replacing the whole thing. Wonder why Fiat went with plastic??!! Love the truck but that is NFG! Good luck to the rest of y'all......

O’reilly’s Carrie’s these fuel filters for about $90 for the pair. The water separator is listed as a fuel filter also for 2019 and up. You will need to know what you are looking at to get the right one. They do stock both in master craft brand. They are the same as mopar. The primary filter is the same from 2013 and up.
