In this video, Steve, with Upstart Epoxy, takes you through the process of achieving the wisp effect. Capturing and encasing wisps into your work, can add an extra layer of dimension and pop to an already amazing piece. We start off by sealing all of the wood to the piece first so no bubbles are allowed to exit the wood. Because the wisp effect requires a transparent color it is important to seal all the wooden pieces, so no bubbles can ruin that. From there, we allow the sealed wood to cure in the form. This is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Once the wood has cured then we are ready to pour our first layer of epoxy, which, in this case we used a liquid base pigment to maintain the transparency of the epoxy. Simultaneously we poured a very small amount of epoxy resin in a separate small, mixing cup to cure at the same time as the base coat in the form. The small amount of epoxy in the mixing cup we colored gray because we wanted the colors to resemble some awesome handles we found at a garage sale. The trick to creating the wisp effect requires you to add the small amount of gray epoxy into the original piece after about 12 to 13 hours once the consistency of the epoxy is like that of peanut butter. From there, the epoxy is much more malleable, and, you can manipulate it and have it stay the way you want it to. After doing this, the layers of epoxy will cure together, and you will achieve a suspended, wisp effect look! As always, to finish up the piece, we refine outside by planning it, sanding it, and beveling the edges. Once that is done, we added a bit of wood oil to the back and flooded the top side with our table top epoxy resin. Lastly, a final trick that we included in the video is the placement of the handles without having to drill them into a finished board. Instead, during the flood coat process, we attach the handles to the board by simply placing them on top of the board where we wanted them to be, and once the table top epoxy resin had cured completely the handles were stuck in place and positioned exactly how he wanted them.
