Important note about this process!!!! Make sure calipers and pads are fully installed BEFORE putting car into brake maintenance mode!!! If you are doing a brake service, then find out that the pads are worn enough to need replacing, put them back together temporarily. When engaging maintenance mode, the piston will run ALL of the way out till it hits the pads, THEN retract into the caliper. IF the pads/rotor are not in place (ie: caliper removed from the mounting bracket), the piston will move out and not stop till it literally falls out!

Couldn’t get it to maintenance mode (mondeo 2015, keyless). Unwound manually placed it back on the disc and the old pads and additionally depressed the cylinder with screwdriver wedged between pad and the caliper. Did not feel like wanting to risk damaging the plastic electric motor case. After service just pumped the brake and lifted parking brake. No error lights or messages after service.

You may need to have it serviced by a mechanic. Compressing the piston without it being in maintenance mode can cause damage.

I tried doing this and it came up with a message that said parking brake malfunction. Not sure why I can’t get it to go into maintenance mode. Could the piston be broken? First time we tried it did come all the way out.

My 2015 fusion did the same thing. After the second attempt it went into the maintenance mode but still only opened the calipers about 2/3 of the way so had to crack the bleeder and manually screw the calipers in the remainder of the way.

So sometimes when I’m driving my car it works just fine and then I’ll turn my car on after going somewhere and turn off my parking brake and while I’m driving it it feels like the parking brake is still on but it doesn’t show that my brake is on and it gets bad enough to the point when I get back home it’s smoking from the back tires like the brake was on the whole time. @ReviewsAndHowTos

You're supposed to do this before changing the brakes and compressing the piston. If they're locked up, then you may have damaged the brakes. Probably time to see a mechanic, or replace something further.

Wait, so im a bit confused on this. After doing this, do you still need to use a caliper reset tool? Some people are saying it retracts automatically, and you dont have to use anything. Some people are saying you can literally push it in by hand, and others say you still need to use a reset tool. Thanks to anyone who replies to this as Ford wants to charge $400 to do the JUST the rear pads and rotors, so I'd rather just do it myself.
