What an excellent, clear, simple explanation of these basic fundamentals for newbies to this great hobby. Too often we assume people understand the big words we like to use. You are a very good teacher. One thing you might have added to your presentation is the importance of keeping the tripod as steady as possible. Lightweight aluminum tripods like the one in your beginner scope are very prone to vibration and movement. A couple of ideas that help are 1) hang something heavy, like a jug of water, from the bottom of the center of the tripod, and 2) once you have your tripod set up, pack a few sandbags around the feet. With all the neighborhood kids coming over to see the stars, I guarantee several will kick those tripod legs in the dark and mess everything up. Congratulations for doing such a good job. Clear skies.

In the polar alignment bit, you said "set that to your longitude" -- you meant "lattitude"-- otherwise it'll be messed up...
@MrGambler650
5 жыл бұрын
You beat me to that comment. He said Longitude, but he should have said Latitude. SLC Lat is 40+ and Long is -114+
@MrGambler650
5 жыл бұрын
Longitude is relatively unimportant. It has nothing to do with Earth's axis. The Equatorial Mount must be aligned with Earth's axis which changes with Latitude not Longitude. You must know your Latitude to align your mount with the Earth's axis within 1 degree, then to follow objects it only takes turning the Right Ascension knob. Once your latitude is set, you can be at any longitude along that latitude and be aligned.
@MrGambler650
5 жыл бұрын
@vincent stewart But yes, set your latitude with the mount pointing at polaris and your telescope's counterweight at a right angle to the axis and lock the mounts. Now you only need RA knob to track celestial objects!

You are the first video that I have seen that addresses that once you polar align, how to look in the South sky by making the adjustments to the tube to get a comfortable view without just about having to just about lay on the ground to look in your eyepiece! lol Of course we know that you must loosen up the tube restraints and spin the tube, BUT you are the first to cover it that I've seen. Extra tips for tripod stability: when setting up on soft ground (e.g. grassland) put some tiles under the legs, and set the scope up well beforehand so the tiles have time to settle in under the scope's weight. When setting up on a hard surface, pull out the legs a little, so that they're under a bit of tension.

YES!!! Finally someone tells that one small yet VERY critical detail....once polar aligned, DO NOT rotate the base of mount to point behind you. Do not move the tripod.. Also another key point that some mention, but not always, if you polar align well, then once you lock in, you only need adjust the right ascension slow motion adjustment ( NOT the main lock at the base of the mount ). Dude BIG THANKS!!

You can get a tripod with a bubble level built in. (or sometimes it’s in the mount.) The idea is that in aligning the Polar axis with the north celestial pole that you are aligning the axis with the rotation of the earth’s axis. Once aligned, the stars will ONLY move along a path that circles around the axis... so once you get a star in your viewfinder, turning the right ascension knob alone will keep the star or planet in view. If your mount is motorized- once it’s aligned on a star, the motor will turn the polar axis at the same speed the earth turns so the object stays centered without you having to do anything. For beginners, if you haven’t bought a scope yet, find one with a GO TO computerized function. These can be far easier to set up accurately and they will automatically track objects... what is nice is that you can just select the object you want to look at and the scope will find it for you.
@MrGambler650
