Now, I'm ready to add some polka dot material or ruffled slip like material to the slit... are you feeling up to making a video about doing this with your recommendations on if I should try to go with the open slit option, or the not open slit option? Thinking about that second option makes my brain hurt to think about! Something else that makes my brain hurt to think about is if I'm wanting that bit of peaking through material to be lacy and ruffling too! Y-i-k-e-s..... oh, dear.... y-i-k-e-s... breathing into holding on, as I watch for your reply... Many thanks, Abbie!!!

thank you for this! I inherited a maxi skirt from my grandmother after her passing late 2021, and I've been wanting to add a slit to it for a while because it's just too restrictive, (plus side slits are just cute!) This was super easy to follow and I think mine turned out great considering I have very little experience with sewing. I'd like to think she'd just be proud of me for doing it myself lol

This is the cutest upcycling story! I'm sure she is proud of you. Have you joined my FB group? You can share photos and ask beginner sewing Q's there and I'd LOVE to see your grandmother's upcycled skirt! facebook.com/groups/diyfashiondesigners

Thank you for the tutorial! Do you think it'd be possible to do this on a satin skirt? I'm afraid the fabric will look bad with the sewing because of how thin it is (it doesn't have any stitches only a zipper holds it together)

This does work with satin! I just tried it recently for another project and it looked great!

What if the seams are originally sewn in the zigzag pattern (because the skirt is a bit stretchy)?
@katinabotten
4 ай бұрын
Hi! The overlock stitch can be taken out and then you overlock (2-rows of straight stitches and then the zigzag stitch) and a special overlock presser foot
@DIYFashionRebel
4 ай бұрын
you can seam rip those zigzag stitches out (they're usually called an overlock stitch) but your seam allowance will probably be VERY narrow, so you may only be able to fold it back one time instead of twice like I show in the video. Otherwise the steps should be the same. Does that make sense? Sorry for the late response, I wasn't getting any notifications from YT for some reason.

How would I add fabric or lace to the slit, To make it a little more modest for my self sometimes I have skirts that the slit might go up a little higher and I’d like to have that back area covered❤

Thanks for the tutorial, most I looked up they were constructing the dress. I need to be sure my idea to put a slit in the front/side of a long store bought was going to work without problems and without adding fabric. My daughter is doing engagement pictures and I suppose she wants a little sexy look to the long prairie style dress she bought. It does have a long ruffle at bottom, which will be interesting....

How would you deal with a seam that does not finish the edges separately as in your example, but finished them together? When I seam rip that out, it leaves the edge bare and fraying and where the edges come back together, there’s a lump. Would I have to take the skirt apart all the way to the waistline? 😬
@DIYFashionRebel
4 ай бұрын
it's a possibility. if your fabric is unraveling and you aren't able to do the double fold like I show in the video, you can zigzag stitch the edges (to prevent them from unraveling) and then just fold the edges back one time instead of twice. But if you're getting a bump or bulge from where they meet back together, you may need to completely re-sew the seam to get rid of the bulge. I know this was posted awhile ago, sorry for the late response, my YT notifications got turned off somehow. Have you figure out how to add a slit to your skirt yet?
@jampuppy

@@DIYFashionRebel Ah That’s what I figured. Probably not worth the effort in this case. It’s actually a tunic I have that I want to add slits to on either side. So even though I said “waistline”, in my case it would actually be where the body meets the sleeve. Thanks for responding. No worries on timing. I haven’t found an easier solution and the top sits where I left it. 🤷♀️
