I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzitem.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

Logged in just to comment. I've watched countless videos on this subject. This is hands down the best one yet. No bla bla bla, no self edification, no begging for subs. I've watched a lot of videos on how to cast a baitcaster and this is the first that started off with setting the drag correctly. The vast majority never even talk about how an incorrectly set drag can cause backlashes. I'll be recommending this video to some friends of mine just starting out with baitcasters. Out of 15 rigs I own right now, only 2 have baitcaster reels. One I use for flipping and pitching into cover and the other I use for actual casting. It takes a while to learn how to use them, but they definitely have their place in nearly ever fisherman's arsenal.

I just bought a new Shakespeare rod and reel combo from Walmart and got a big surprise. I worked for over an hour trying to adjust the reel to throw my favorite fishing baits but failed. Since the new reel was right out of the package I couldn't understand why the bait adjusting knob would not let the bait stop falling. I removed the little shiny knob and found the answer! The manufacturer made the knob depth too short! I went out in my shop and took a leather belt punch and made a round leather spacer to place inside the knob under the spacer that came with the reel. BINGO ...works great.

that diagram on the whiteboard might have helped me figure out how to use a baitcaster. i know enough to get a few good casts, but after a few decent casts, i get a backlash so bad that the only way for me to untangle it is to just cut all the line off and respool. but that diagram showed me i gotta crank my side drag a little more
@modernpawn

Alot of people throw harder over head, so it tends to backlash more than sidearm. If you have a dial for the high speed brake, set it to the highest number and work back down. If you swing to hard for the rod, you can overload the rod and it buts a big whip like loop in the line and can cause a backlash. It also helps to cast like 50% of you power once the reel is set and work up and cast 'speed' until you get it casting real nice. Good luck and thanks for posting.

You said you recommend a baitcaster. Why? I have both. The spinning reel is more versatile. It works with baits of any weight, works fine in high wind, and doesn't have brakes to mess with every time you change lure weights (I will never have a dozen different combos for every lure type).

Never used a baitcaster before two years ago. I am 60 years old now. Can't believe I waited so long. My fishing buddy bought me a baitcaster reel for my birthday. A Quantum Pulse baitcaster reel. Started with 12 pound mono then 30 pound braid. It took a while to learn how to set the reel up. Two years later I have caught more bass than the other 10 years combined. So people go get a baitcaster reel and begin your journey on getting better at bass fishing. You will have some up and downs with the baitcaster reel. Learn to set up your reel with each lure you are going to use. That's the trick. Dial it back when casting into the wind. Become a bank fishing Pro. Good luck. Shawn.

Great tutorial!! But of course I have a question-- I generally am running lures that weigh between 1/2 oz up to one ounce on the lake I normally fish-- does this mean I’ll be doing adjustments basically whenever I go to a heavier or lighter jig arrangement?-- And the question is which adjustment am I going to be using ? The brakes or the friction Knobs or do I have to adjust both?? I’m a rank beginner at bait casters Obviously. Thanks.

On the subject of the dial brake system, I open up the side and inside it allows a ratchet from 1 to six. On top of that I also have a magnetic dial this goes from min to max. Question is what are these two layers of brakes for (called dual brake ). How do I adjust cheers. It's only a cheapo reel called the kastking Spartacus... ? Another question is can I possible cast lighter baits as it seems only better for heavier ones. Thanks alot. I

Nice vid. Thanks. I got a sparatcus kastking and a okuma ceymar rod rated 10 to 30 gram. Can't seem to throw anything lighter ie small shads n stuff. Trying to find the best combo for this set up brake wise and format, especially for the lighter stuff ( that is if it's possible. ). I see plenty of guys wizzing out seemingly moderate lures, but my efforts don't seem to whizz like they do? Any ideas ? Kinda thinking this type of dual brake system (centrifugal plus magnets) is a hindrance. Unless me doing summink wrong.

Thanks for the video. Im 36 and never used a baitcaster in my life, only used spinning reels. Im looking to purchase a QUANTUM CATALYST LEFT HAND BAITCASTING REEL 7.0:1 10-Bearing CT101HPTA off of ebay and cant wait to use it. I have a Berkeley Cherrywood med heavy 7' baitcaster rod but with a spinner on it, lol. Yes, that little hook gets in the way, but ive gotten used to it and fish just fine. One thing i notice is that there are a little left hand reels for people to get. Seems like everything for the right handed fisherman. I find this ironic since im right handed but reel with my left. P.S. The rod was purchase due to its red color, which is my favorite color, paid no attention to on whether or not it was a baitcaster rod or a spinning rod. Didnt notice till i got home and connected the spinning reel and thought "this is backwards" lol. :)

I am 59 years old. My friend just bought me my first baitcaster reel. Its a Quantum Pulse. I was at Wal-Mart they had a spincast combo for $34.00. I didnt know you had to buy a baitcaster rod. So, I came home and took off the spincast reel and put the Quantum Pulse Bait caster reel on the spin cast pole. The pole by the way is a 6'6 Ugly Stick medium heavy action. The reel went on great and it looks good. The next day my friend told me I should you have gotten a baitcaster pole. I learned you can put a spincast reel on a baitcaster pole but you can put a baitcaster reel on a spincaster pole. It was cheap and I like Ugly Sticks so I am leaving it on the Spinning ugly stick pole. The differents is the eyes on the spin pole are bigger and the baitcaster poles eyes are smaller and it has a curve on the bottom to put your finger around below the reel thats all. The spincast poles are cheaper too. Shawn

I've used open faced reels my entire life. Grew up cat fishing on the river with live bait. Learned how to use a Baitcaster for lure fishing around 5 years ago. I barely ever used open face reels anymore, even with light lures (balsa wood cranks) It takes a quality reel (not expensive) and good up keep. I outcast my open face reels on distance, and accuracy. Back to back casting of lures gets to be so much quicker with baitcasters. If i'm live bait cork fishing I will take out my open faces/ spin cast gear. I've had and seen open faced reels twist and knot up just like a baitcaster in the wind.

I totally have to agree with you, I've used spinning set up all my life and always though baitcasters were "stupid" because i was always a bait fisherman Until I came upon groups of guys who fish the same waterways i do for striped bass using lures, i finally gave in and invested in a baitcaster set up a few months back, at first it was aggrevating getting acquainted with tuning baitcasters, but using lures on baitcaster and the action you get when playing a fish on one is ADDICTING

Have a question. Hopefully I can explain this right. It's unrelated to casting and backlash though. I have an issue with the drag. Here's where it's hard to describe what's happening. With or without line, the spool where you tie your line on, it rotates about a thumb nail to two thumb nails in distance before there is tension on the drag. Imagine checking your drag and you pull and it has some resistance but doesn't catch for an inch or two. Without line on it, you can turn the spool with your fingers that far before you feel the resistance too. Why wouldn't the drag immediately catch and why would the spool roll forward before catching? If there's a delay in it catching I'm sure it's affecting setting the hook. Thanks

This is the best explanations I have seen on how to adjust a baitcasting reel. However, the only part I'm still not quite sure is the part about adjusting the brake weight since I do not know how you put more brake weights on vs turning them off. Do you simply pull them one by one so that each one of them touches the inside edges of the reel or until they make a clicking sound? Also, as a general rule, would you say the lighter the lure I'm throwing the more brake weight should be turned on or is it vice versa? Thanks ahead if you can answer my questions, I appreciate it.
