Here are some tips I've found most helpful when setting these up: 1) Assure wheel is fully seated into the drop outs and that your qrs are firmly tightened. 2) Adjust the caliper first with cable and housing fully disconnected 3) Put a large white sheet or board on the floor beneath the bike to help you visually check pad clearance.

Written steps Thanks Volagi for this procedure!! How to Adjust SRAM AVID BB7 disk brakes 1. Note inboard pad is stationary and one closest to the spokes. 2. Dial inboard (larger dial) all the way out CCW (Counter-clockwise) using T25 Torx screwdriver 3. Dial outboard dial all the way out CCW. 4. Mark inboard dial with sharpie (for step 6) 5. Loosen 2 mounting bolts with hex wrench enough so body can move.. 6. Turn inboard CW (Clockwise) 1 full revolution, using sharpie marking as guide. 7. While pushing caliper body towards mounting bracket, turn outboard CW all the way until it stops. 8. Tighten mounting bolts, keep washers straight and aligned on bolts so body does not get misaligned. 9. Turn outboard dial a few big turns by hand CCW (~1/2 a revolution) 10. Keep adjusting CCW until not much noise (1 or 2 spoke ping every revolution or so) 11. Then adjust inboard CCW 3 clicks, if needed to reduce noise. 12. Then adjust outboard CCW and then CW if needed, until truly no noise. (or just small scrapes). Use finger (carefully) to push up on moving caliper piece to stop wheel from spinning while adjusting.

It is not necessary to have the brake pull your brake lever nearly to the bar in order to get stopping power while maintaining pad clearance. There is a way to not make it feel crappy, and you might want to start by checking out Part 3 of our 4 part video made by Zach Overholt. Do be sure to watch all the videos and read up on the blog to get better insight into how to set them up. The link is in the description below the video.

The only way I recommend setting these up is AS STATED BY THE MANUAL. The stationary pad is actually set about 2mm away from the rotor, from memory, and the active pad is set very close. It sounds bizarre, but my brakes have never worked better.

no problems. I'd use the 203 up front, and the 185 in the rear. In my experience, the 203 rear disc brake caliper adaptor, places the caliper very close, if not too close to the frame of the BD, making it difficult to get that 5mm allen into position. The 185mm adaptor for rear brake use, gives you enough room to more easily access the Caliper Positioning System bolts. 185 rear rotor is plenty.

6) If you are setting up brake housing for the Volagi Liscio, the section from the fork to the front caliper should be 105mm, while the section from the left chainstay to the rear caliper should be 137mm. If using compressionless housing, the lengths will be shorter, so you'll have to experiment with that. Essentially, we are trying to eliminate housing compression and distortion from the brake line.

8) the caliper should be adjusted so that you have at least 2 clicks available to back away from the rotor when the outboard pad is adjusted as close as possible to the rotor without rubbing. Basically, you can get the pads so close that the brake will feel awesome in the workstand, but you need room for real world deflection once you start riding.

4) Make sure the pads are properly installed in the caliper, that the pad spring isn't backwards, that the pads aren't backward. If any of these things are going on, the pads will not be parallel to each other nor to the rotor. 5) When adjusting the caliper, align it so that the rotor is perfectly parallel to the inboard pad, with the inboard pad without any rub.

Since this video is most comprehensive on how to set up BB7, I'd like to note: -At first - disengage the brake cable -Marking the inboard knob and rotating it one full turn - useless. In reality, it will not help to keep properly adjusted gaps between pads and rotor. Actually, you proved it by performing final tuning in the end -You could explain how to "play" with the cable to achieve firm force on the brake lever, although spring preload is not very good for the spring) Overall, good video!

On my brake the inboard adjustment has no stop and it's possible to unscrew it completely. I just slackened it off so that the new pads I fitted were well clear of the disc and proceeded as the video suggests. Mine is on the rear of a Cannondale touring tandem and the mudguard stays and rear pannier frame don't make it any easier :)

I have the actual manual for these brakes and they recommend that you adjust the inside pad - 2/3 in in the outside pad one third in not 50-50
@charangohabsburg1
Жыл бұрын
The video does not recommend 50-50. It's more like 1 full turn inboard preset and the rest by adjusting until the pads dn't tuch the disk anymore. Worked like a charm for me. P.S. May it be that the often admonished squealing of the BB7 is due to the manufacturer's flawed instructions? They seem to be written by some random dude behind the desk who never had to install one single BB7.

I agree this method does not work but... the bb7's are way better than your trps. You have to adjust your pads by eye... look in between the pads where the rotor is and just leave 1mm space on each side... works every time...

7) When reconnecting the cable to the lever arm be sure to engage the caliper lever arm enough so that the outboard pad clears the rotor. Yes, you'll find you initially gain more clearance between the outboard pad and the rotor within the first 5mm of the caliper lever's movement. It seem to me that the mechanical piston, once pressed against the outboard pad, will cause it to be parallel to the inboard pad.
@coryedd3783
2 жыл бұрын
Finally someone who experiences what I have been with my own BB7 roads.. the initial pull of the brake lever increases the outboard pad to rotor clearance until it eventually starts moving inward again. When setting sufficient pad clearance this initial outward movement can create excessive lever travel. I talked to SRAM tech support and they didn't know what I am was talking about. I recently started slightly taking slack out of the caliper arm before I tightened the cable bolt. This has made a big difference in lever feel. Question for you. Every tutorial on adjusting BB7S is a little different. The way I do it is both pad adjusters all the way out, inboard screwed in until wheel is locked, back inboard out 10 clicks, screw outboard adjuster in until wheel is locked, then tighten caliper. I notice you do this part the opposite with inboard only going in one turn? Which way centers the caliper better?

the slack thing is probably the reason some travellers, even experienced travellers, think these brakes are crap. you're the first person to mention it, Avid should write about it in bold in their instruction manuals.

So I installed mine tonight, Is it normal to have to pull the brake lever all the freaking way till it makes the pads get contact with the rotor? Is there anyway to make it so it doesn't feel crappy by having to pull all the way down. I don't know how you could fix it though since the arm on the caliper requires so much distance in it's motion. Can I make it so the arm is just set higher on the cable so it doesn't have to travel so far?

@lambodp

He's trying to account for the pads not being seated properly. By grabbing the torque arm or brake lever, it helps to seat the pads in the caliper and avoid any false rubbing caused by the pads being crooked. Hope that explains your question.

Hmmm, interesting. This is pretty different than what the actual manual says about how to adjust these brakes. There's actually a 2:1 turn ratio from outer dial vs. inner dial. Meaning, for every 2 clicks you make inboard/outboard from the outer dial, you make 4 clicks respectively with the inner dial. And all that AFTER properly seating the caliper... which by the way is different than the method you used, though I wouldn't delve into that. Also, after following the manual, there was absolutely no disc rub, and the shift lever was spaced properly. Worked like a dream right after. I'll leave that to whoever watches the video to figure that out.

I dont understand the official instructions. First, they don't have the hint about getting the body aligned, which seems very important. But more important, it wants a 2mm gap between inboard stationary and rotor. When done this way the rotor is bent in every time the brakes are applied, which can't be good for rotor straightness in the long term?

Ideally you'll want to have them screwed out (loosened) about half or two thirds of the way. The reasoning for this is that, with new cables, there is going to be a certain amount of stretching even after you have done initial stretching during install, so your fine tune adjustments in future will most likely be tightening up the slack.
@hahmmo

Stout Lager / per manual, you should use barrel adjuster to compensate cable slack, not the adjuster knob.
@charangohabsburg1

@@hahmmo This is not true, the manual very clearly states the exact opposite: "As the brake pads wear, turn the inboard and outboard brake pad adjustment knobs clockwise until the desired pad and rotor gap is achieved. Do not use the inline or lever barrel adjuster to adjust for pad wear."
