Just a minor point at 10:56. Turning the screws on the back of the saddles clockwise would surely lengthen the string, (ie moving the saddle further away from the nut). While the opposite is true for anti-clockwise, (shortening).

I have a Classic Vibe Telecaster. I got it more than a year ago and have had nothing but trouble with it in terms of playability and intonation. I recently decided to try it with 9s and start from scratch with the setup. While the thinner strings aren't my preference, it played the best it has since I bought it and was as close to perfectly intonated as you can expect to get with a Tele that has classic saddles. I thought "Yes! I've cracked it!". I put some 10s on thinking that only minor adjustments would be needed, but I've encountered a strange issue. I've gone through the typical procedures. The neck has appropriate relief, the strings don't seem to be riding too high in the nut and I'm using close to Fender's recommended starting point for action. I've used the technique of having one string of a pair sharing a saddle be slightly sharp and the other slightly flat. The problem is that the low E is drastically flat. When I move the saddle towards the fret board, it doesn't seem to make any difference to how flat it is. It's still one light away on my tuner before registering as D sharp. I've tried raising the action, lowering it, taking it to extremes back and fourth (thereby throwing the A way out), I just can't get that one string to intonate (or get close). I'm completely stumped. I just don't know what the problem is. I'd take my guitar to a tech, but there is only one locally and I have very little faith in him. I asked him to fit a new nut on my guitar (after a botched attempt to make my own bone nut) and he kept it for over six months and when I got tired of waiting and went to see him, he'd not done it, said "it's probably okay" (the string spacing was off, one of the slots was cut too deep and I'd rounded off a corner I shouldn't have so part of the wall of the slot was visible) and gave it back. I've ordered stuff from him and never got a call back so had to buy it online instead. It was also him that was responsible for the initial setup the guitar had which had the action more than double Fender's recommended height.

Fortunately this problem is a common one, however I have seen it in the past. With Fenders not liking strings 10 and above and Gibsons not liking strings below 10's, more so with Gibsons because the intonation adjustment is only a few millimeters on tunomatic bridges. This could be sorted by a professional luthier but because you don't have easy access to one, basically you have 3 choices. 1. stick with the lighter strings. 2. change the bridge plate so you can adjust individual strings or drill the existing one. 3. sell the guitar. There are some other not so helpful fixes which I'll mention anyway because there's always a clever clogs wanting make a pretentious comment. You could use alternative tuning and see if that fixes the issue (but you have to like alternative tunings) or make a floating saddle or a split saddle out of brass, but this is a luthier job really. I'm really sorry I can't be more helpful, but without being able to get my hands on the guitar I can't say what's going. It's a shame, because I have 2 students with classic vibes and I love them . . .
@napalmhardcore

@@guitar-academy Thanks for the reply. While I don't wish problems on others, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person with this issue because I kept thinking I must have been doing something wrong (despite having gone over every step multiple times only to have the same result). I think I'm going to leave it setup with the 10s for a little while and see if it settles, if not I'll just have to re-string with 9s or find a way to get it serviced by a different tech (problematic as I live on an island). I think I'd actually prefer 9.5s, but I don't seem to be able to find any in plain steel (I have an allergy to nickel and potentially other metals/alloys so I'm using Rotosound British Steels). It's really frustrating not having a tech I trust locally. I have a slight fret issue on one of my other guitars that I'd like to have sorted as well as the nut on my acoustic which I discussed earlier (which has been out of action since). I don't understand how my local tech can afford to turn down business the way he does. They're only open four days a week, which suggests business isn't exactly booming.

ahh . . that does happen and it's not the easiest thing to solve. Sometimes different strings (or a different gauge) can help. You can get a compensated nut, but I haven't had much success with these. You can take the spring out so that you can take the saddle tight against the bridge plate. That's all I can think of . . 🤔

@guitar-academy
4 жыл бұрын
brilliant . . 😊 Your idea for the fret buzz is the best because even if something else is causing the problem bridge setting will cure it, however you could check these as well . . . . . The fret buzz could also be the truss rod or the fret seating. Look at the frets through a magnifying glass and check they are pressed in properly, and if they are then it isn't fret seating. Then look down the neck to check if it's straight, a buzz can be caused by a bend in the neck, if the neck is reasonably straight you,re OK. I hope this helps 😊

I've been trying to intonate my guitar for a while now. The E B and G strings will not intonate no matter what I do -- they are still about 10-15 cents flat at the twelfth fret and I can't adjust the saddles won't go any further forward without the screw coming out. What can I do about this? It's driving me crazy.
@guitar-academy
4 жыл бұрын
It's hard for me to answer accurately without seeing the guitar, but the easiest solutions might be to buy longer screws. Sometimes it can be caused by bad strings and a new set of strings solves the problem. I would try the strings first, unless you recently replaced them. Sorry I can't be more helpful . .
@landofold

@@guitar-academy No worries. One more thing if you have time. The B and G strings are sharp at the lower frets (1st to 5th). I think it's something to do with the nut, is it feasible for me to replace it myself or should I take it to a luthier?

Another really helpful video, can I ask if the action at the top end (12th fret) is too high e.g 3mm or more, would you adjust this first and then do the intonation or does it not matter. Finally, I've got a Yamaha Pacifica which has two little screws at the bridge for each string (as it seems do most guitars) does it matter whether these are both adjusted the same amount, as it seems you can have each of these bridges flat or tilted. Currently, they seem to follow (approximately) the radius of the neck, so is this for a reason? Thanks.
@guitar-academy
4 жыл бұрын
I'd do the action before the intonation every time. I've had a guitar where I had to have the outer strings lean in, so one screw would be longer that the other. But this was a bad guitar . . LOL I try to make the strings follow the radius . . . I hope this helps 🙂

Thank you very informative! I read a lot of people intonating their guitars on the 3rd or 5th fret rather than the 12 fret, what is your opinion about that?
@guitar-academy
4 жыл бұрын
The frets people use to set the intonation on is usually a primary harmonic if they are doing it by ear 12, 7, 5. That's because it has to be somewhere you get a strong harmonic to compare with the fretted note. If you're using a tuner I guess it doesn't matter very much where you set it. Where people choose to tune from is a personal choice and their is no wrong way as long as they get good results, but I find that inaccurate intonation becomes more obvious the further up the neck you go so that's were I set my intonation. The 12th fret is an important point for me, so I use it a lot. When I make a guitar or fit a neck it's where I do all my neck measurements from because it's the center between the nut and the saddle. I hope this answers your question 😊

So is it safe to say if you intimate it based off the twelve fret all the frets in between should be accurate? I tend to see it done this way and I wonder if that simply translates to everything else being in tune . I just got two p90 guitars, one with a funk magic bridge, at the store the high e was buzzing and not ringing much, apprently they needed to fix the neck. It rang fine after but I just double checked and it’s not properly intonated, nor is my other guitar, which has a wrap around bridge . Do you think of a guitar had that issue with the high e not ringing because of neck angle from the beginning it may be prone to this kind of issue with the neck?

Setting the intonation at the 12th fret should bring all the other frets into tune, providing the guitar was made correctly in the first place. Regarding the E not ringing, I can't say what that was. A dodgy string can be cause by anything . . bad neck relief, a badly seated fret, a warn nut or badly shaped nut, or even a low bridge or faulty saddle. To diagnose your guitar someone needs to inspect it . .

I personally find it easier using the 12th harmonic as a reference note to tune from, but some people prefer to use a tuner 😊

Normally I wouldn't but for this video I did so that the camera could pick up on the sound of the guitar. If you've got a plug in tuner you would be better plugging into that. 😊

No . . it is brilliant . . I want my tutorials to be as error free as possible because obviously I make mistakes, but I have nobody to check stuff for me. I'm delighted I found this tutorial. I recently changed strings and a 2 month old brand new MIM Fender and since changing strings I'm getting a buzzing sound on my D string from fret 9 most of the way toward the dusty end. I wonder will this help. The D string only has two wraps around the tuner, maybe I didn't give the string enough slack when putting it on?
@guitar-academy
4 жыл бұрын
The way the tuner is wound wont make a difference as the nut sets the height of the strings. More likely is that the strings you put on are lighter and so they move more when you play them. A couple of turns on the little screws holding the saddle on the buzzing string will probably sort it (you usually get a little tiny allen key for this). I need to do a video on this subject on an electric guitar . . .

hmmm . . . Sometimes new strings solve the issue. If the saddles are adjusted as far as they can go, you can get compensating saddles that adjust further (depending on the guitar). That's all I can think of at the moment. 🤔

@@LinkinPark4Ever1996 I have no idea either. Even plugged in I've had tuners that are more sensitive on the bridge pickup than the neck and I had one tuner that was over sensitive so I had to use it with the guitar on about 7 volume wise. I have a similar issue with my 1972 Gibson SG Standard. It's in tune at the open and 12th fret but like you I have noticed the same issue, mainly with my 'G' string. For example when playing between an ' E minor and E major' open chord. The 'G' string on the major chord is slightly sharp. Some people refer to it as "the G syndrome". One thing to be careful of is not press too hard on the fret. I did replace the nut about a year ago so I'm wondering it that may be the problem. Should I remove some material under the nut 'G' string?

Does the 12th fret test work for drop c tuning? I'm using a prs custom 22 with a tremolo bridge and the bridge is tilting up. It still sounds amazing but I'm starting to feel like something isn't right here.
@guitar-academy
3 жыл бұрын
If the bridge is tilting up it has been set up as a floating trem so you can bend it up and down OR you're using alternative tunings without setting the guitar up correctly for the tuning. The intonation is tested the same on all guitars and all tunings, you need to make sure that the 12th frets are in time with the open strings.

Hello, please help. Whatever I do there is an intonation gap between empty e string and e tone on 12 fret. I tried moving saddle as you said, forward ( because e tone on 12 is lower) , I tried lifting saddle up or down .. soon as I tune guitar, e tone on 12 fret is always lower. It simply keeps that proportion no matter I do. I particularly have problems with e string and b .Any advice.

This sounds like a neck issue. Try (if possible) hiring the strings and looking for places where the strings might be touching the frets because it sounds the action is too low or the neck is bent so that the strings are touching the frets. The strings should be above the frets at the 12th fret by at least a few millimeters.
@gematria125

Thanks very much it looks like the action is too low but if you don't mind to ask is it action of the string measured with capo on 1 fret or not. I am little bit confused I saw different versions on you tube. Anyhow thanks very ,very much!!!!
@guitar-academy
5 жыл бұрын
@@gematria125 You don't need to have a capo on the first fret to set your action. There is a myth that the lower you action the better, but this isn't true. As an easy fix, just higher the action a little and check to see if the guitar works, then higher the action a little more . . keep going until the guitar works. This isn't a full adjustment, but I can't explain that in text it would take me hours.

I've had this problem. The first thing I would try is to replace the strings, It's amazing how many times that's the problem. @@pmayh3m That extra information changes everything. The first final test of any guitar build is the intonation, so if the intonation is out take it back to whoever built it and get them to sort it.
