Another option to consider for the "no permanent damage" folks are Frixion pens and highlighters. They're heat sensitive, so if you want to remove all marks, you can leave the book in a hot car or put it in a low oven. And if you then change your mind and want the marks back, you can put it in the freezer. I find I have to be careful not to put too much pressure on the pens to avoid creating ridges in the paper, but that may just be the model of pen I have and my writing style.

TRANSPARENTE STICKY NOTES❤ I am one of “tab, but no permanent marks on my books” but I also use transparent sticky notes to add to some of my book. Like real post it size ones. All sorts of options, size and colour on Amazon. I like re reading a book and seeing what I thought a couple months or years ago, seeing how my perspective has it hasn’t changed.

Thanks for this! I'm new to annotating cause I was so nervous to mark up my books. I do the aesthetic tabs to match the book, and I write in pencil first only cause I'm still getting used to the idea of writing in my books in pen and I'm a perfectionist. That and I'm not sure when I start if I'll like a book or not and I can always erase and de-tab lol. I recently finished Crescent City book 1 and afterwards I went through and did highlighter and pen instead of the pencil which was relaxing oddly enough and I got to spend more time with the book. And that I did more based on mood upon re-reading those little sections and remembering why they meant enough to me to tab. I didn't find the initial read through longer but obviously going back through the book takes some time (especially if it's 800 pages!).

Your initial annotation video is what introduced me to you. I am so grateful for this YA fantasy / bibliophile journey we’ve been on the last few years. For example, in An Ember in the Ashes, I highlight the ebook (orange for world building, pink for humor, blue for plot/character development). I bought the colour tabs you recommended in your first annotation video. No doubt I will check out what you suggest in this video. Thank you again.

I have the same multiple/gradient colour tabs and I hate them 😅 You can’t write on them and if you can, the pen takes an age to dry. Since I bought them, I use them for work and my sketchbook. I don’t annotate every book. Out of all the books that I have, I have annotated less than a handful. I’m currently annotating and illustrating (not just doodles, full-page drawings) my way through The Wheel of Time. I have the whole series in hardback (which will never be touched) and I’m repurchasing the tall US floppy paperbacks to annoate and draw in as I re-read and continue in from where I left off in the hardbacks). My tabs for those books are half transparent, half coloured. I hate having a tab cover text so the transparent tabs are great. There are 8 colour options and as much as it is limiting, I need a limit. 😂 Or else I’d have 15 blue tabs for Moiraine alone. I also use the same pen throughout but I have a different coloured pen for audiobook comments and for previous thoughts I noted down when I read the ebook on the bus.

I annotate with no tabs. Whether I am using just a pen, just a highlighter, or both. But what I do to easily find, is highlight the edge of the page that I annotated. So you can see just from looking at the edges what pages are marked, and find stuff form there. It also looks cool on my shelf when turned around lol

I'm the damage free to the extreme. Where I'm doing basically everything you mentioned. I use the rainbow color tabs for marking specific scenes (pink for deaths, orange for fights/running/chasing, yellow for plot with the other 2 as misc), but on my 2nd reads I have a darker set of tabs I plan on marking and noting more specific in an analysis type way (im working on my own books): Foreshadowing Plot twist Emotional scenes Any errors in the writing (misspell to changing terms) Some misc I have a few sizes of the transparent stickies with the thin sticky tabs for if I have to make a note or write a comment (the thin have their own system I'm working on) I also keep the journal so I can make my notes as well as do a star review and a review of the series as a whole. Basically, when I'm done the whole book is gonna be annotated galore, and my journal filled to the brim. As a side note, the transparent stickies are plastic like so sharpie is the best for that. (I'm afraid of friction transfer though so I have a large size i use to cover that written one so there's no chance of it- like putting tracing paper between pencil and charcoal works) I haven't tried it yet, but if you get a pastel one or a decently transparent sharpie I think you'd be able to forego the highlight tape if you're using it with the sticky note (and the colors don't have a specific system)
@BrittanytheBibliophile

Ooo good to know about the transparent stickies! Also your annotation method is *thorough* good for you!!! I like the idea of having darker tabs for second read throughs that are more in depth. My annotating journey is very much like yours. At first, I was really against writing in books and you actually got me to try annotating (specifically one of your reading vlogs with the Poppy War, it's engrained in my mind hahaha). I started with Daisy Jones and the Six which was a reread and it was kind of everything, sticky tabs, pens, underlining, writing and then I stopped cause I felt I got tired. Now I annotate everything with the fourth method but without using different tabs, I just tab the highlights to be able to find my favorite parts easily. And then I use a notebook to annotate books I cannot annotate (like borrowed books). This is an unnecessarily long comment to say how much I enjoyed this video hahahah

And I know you want to keep the books for the rest of your life, but you don’t live forever, the books also wont, but the sticky tabs will. ♥️ no hate, just love. good paper tabs do the exact same and there are even transparent paper ones.

Since you prefer the plastic, he tabs, what kind of pan do you use on them? Maybe it’s obvious but the pens that I have all seems to take a while to dry off, get ink, everywhere, smudge, get on the pages other pens just wouldn’t lay down on the plastic tabs at all sharpie, worst decently, but I find myself waiting for it to dry

@@BrittanytheBibliophile Tragic, but entirely entertaining and therefore good for your subscriber count? I love annotating, and I love watching other people talk about how they annotate. I usually just underline and high light my favorite quotes (I color coordinate the highlighter to the book cover). But occasionally, I pick up a book with the feeling that it's going to matter to me, and I use tabs to mark favorite scenes or quotes (also color coordinated with the cover/vibe/aesthetic). Example: I just finished A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, and I highlighted using a gray Mildliner and used light grey, black, and greenish-grey sticky tabs. I like when it looks cohesive 🤣
