Hey, Wade - Great video! I have a question that I used to know. Sometime, we may get a topic we don’t have the slightest idea how to answer. I seem to recall with Toastmasters, somehow you make a link with what was asked, and say something like oh, that reminds me of Y, and you talk about Y. It’s like you switch the topic from the original that you know nothing about, to something you do know something about. You give some really good examples of things you could say: But what would you say or suggest people do when they have absolutely no idea, no connection at all with the question? I can’t find it online and I can’t remember all?

Good question! The overall goal of Table Topics is to speak for one to two minutes, so if you got really desperate, you could just be honest... "I have no idea about Y. I can't tell you anything related to Y, because I don't even really know what Y is. So instead, I'm going to tell you about my favourite sport..." Obviously this kind of response isn't ideal, but if you add a bit of humour, I think the group will understand. Here are some tips so you don't get stuck: -When the Toastmaster announces the theme of the meeting, think in the back of your head about a story or lesson that perhaps relates to that. Have that in the back of your mind before you even arrive at the meeting. -If you hear someone else get a question that you could've answered, perhaps you can say: "I don't know anything about the question you just asked me, but when you asked Bob _____, I thought of a great answer, so I'm going to respond to that question instead." -- Over time you'll get better at addressing the question head-on, but don't feel bad about having to divert away from the question. It's happened to me MANY times.

A new speaker cannot do anymore damage to their progress than avoiding table topics. Contact the table topics Master before the meeting and let them know your interested to be called upon.
