I know they can be expensive. That's why I wanted to make a video on how to choose and apply to book awards: to help save you money.

Congratulations on winning in all those categories! Happy for you. Your cover is stunning. This was the best video on the topic I have seen. Can you recommend a comprehensive resource that lists book awards online that one can access?

Congratulations! Some reviews can feel like winning an award too! For example, I submitted my debut TWINS OF ORION: THE BOOK OF KEYS to ALA Booklist, and actually received a review! (They only review books they recommend libraries purchase, and only 13% of 60k submissions/year get a review!) I'd love to win a Newbery award! When I was a tween, a librarian got my into reading all of them. Although some awards cost money to PLACE the award on your book. Like for the Newbery, it costs $1,500 just for 1,000 stickers--and there is a charge for digital too. I've heard of Traditional publishers paying $50k to put awards on a print run of Newbery winners!

Oh wow! I didn't realize the Newberry could be so expensive! I know some awards charge for the stickers, but the ones I'm familiar with are much less than that. You're right about book reviews feeling like awards too.

The whole book awards industry seems a little sketchy. It seems like they're making the money off of praying on would-be authors getting fortune and fame. It's like you say it charge fifty bucks hundred fifty bucks they can be expensive. Do their judges actually read your book? I'm just publishing my second book it's amazing how many sharks are out there trying to sell you get rich quick schemes that cost $200 and some tens of thousands. My book is a non-fiction published business-to-business sales and marketing. How would somebody find awards not only could they enter into but they wanted enter into?

That is such a valid concern! You really have to do your research. If you get judges feedback as a part of your entry, then you know someone read your book. If they list 50+ judges or something like that, then someone is likely reading your book. You can always ask how judging works. When I was looking into book awards, I looked for contests that were transparent about how judging worked and that had categories I felt my book really fit into. I also asked authors I know who have entered into contests which ones they would do again. At the Colorado Independent Publishers Association, they have a book award called the CIPA EVVY for indie and self-published books. I actually helped then update their judging rubrics last year, so I know that each book is read and judged by 3 people with a quality rubric in that contest. And their judges are people in the publishing industry or experts like librarians. The CIPA EVVYs have fiction and nonfiction categories.

I mention a few, but this video was not intended to be a list of book awards.
