Learn how to apply pure and polymerized tung oil to wood. In this video I review preparing the wood to assure a great looking finish. Preparation involves sanding to between 300-400 grit sandpaper for the final sand. We recommend a minimum of 5 coats. Coats are applied daily when using polymerized tung oil. Pure tung oil should be applied only when the prior coat is dried. This often takes days to weeks depending on temperature and humidity. Thinning is important to assure oil penetration and absorption. Each of the first four coats are applied at different thinning ratios. The fifth and subsequent coats (if desired) are applied at full strength with no thinning. A light sanding with a 300-400 grit sandpaper is recommended between each coat. Sanding dust most be fully removed by vacuuming (or blowing with compressed air), followed by tack clothing, and a wipe down with a mineral spirit dampened rag. The final coat is not sanded after applied but instead can be sanded with the paper from a brown paper bag. This paper is coarse enough to remove minor imperfection (settled dust) and fine enough so as not to negatively affect the sheen. Once the thinners have evaporated the surface tung oil finish is considered food safe. Those worried about thinners off-gassing harmful vapors can substitute citrus thinner instead. Tung Oil is one option in my complete video series on refinishing furniture. See below for a list of my wood finishing videos.
