Balancing on a BOSU is a great exercise and can also be used to assess balance strategy.
As Physical Therapists we learn that there are different balance strategies including ankle and hip.
When standing on the round side of the BOSU you are primarily dealing with ankle strategy, versus when you are on the flat side, this is primarily hip strategy.
It is believed that females tend to have better ankle strategy and would therefore find it easier to balance on the round side of the BOSU. Conversely, males are thought to have better hip strategy, making balancing on the flat side easier.
Try this simple test and let us know in the comments if you are hip or ankle dominant.
If you struggle with this test you may want to start with balancing on level ground, progressing to balancing eyes closed or on a slightly unstable surface such as a pillow or couch cushion, then work your way up to using the BOSU.
