I have a duck couple coming to visit me for the last 4 weeks. The female now eats out of my hand, and the male wants to but the female won't let him, haha. He has to eat the corn off the ground. I have a feeling that the female duck may have been one I hung out with for a day last spring, when I found a few ducklings in my yard. I live on a lake. They stayed for about 7 hours until what I presume was the parents. ?? I thought the male and female went separate ways after hatching of ducklings. Who knows. Sorry this was so long. I really love ducks and have gotten quite attached to these two. I hope if she has ducklings she will bring her clutch back to visit. Growing up we had a pair of mallards that randomly showed up in our neighborhood. My brother and I got a kick out of it (we were kids) so my parents bought a bag of corn for them. We started putting out food for them and over the years they returned every spring and eventually they ate from our hands and actually let us pet them. It was always just the two of them. They were so cute-kind of our unofficial pets. In the beginning they were scared off by our garage opening but a few years in they’d just walk in while the door was still going up just quacking away. Really cool childhood memory.

I get 30-40 ducks in my yard everyday. It started off with 2. I don't know how they found it. When they get ready to migrate I can get up to 60. They don't leave a mess, either. I had geese coming, but had to chase them away due to the mess. It took a lot of chasing, but, they finally stopped. I, too, go through a ton of bird seed. Unfortunately, some of the feed has doubled in cost the last year. I also get sand hill cranes, deer, chipmunks and various types of squirrels. I'm in a subdivision with a large pond in the backyard and a lake 2 blocks away. The cranes will let me approach them to feed. They even let me do that when they have babies. The ducks wait on the other side of the yard.

A mallard couple showed up at my front door, where I fed the birds, last year, also going for a drink or a quick "bath" in one of the larger water bowls I had out. I started to put out a bowl with feed everytime they came around, which was usually in the morning. They werent really shy about me being around them, only keeping a distance of about a yard or so. Later on, I assume it must have been nesting time, only the female continued to come by, but was very hasty and nervous, then they disappeared for the autumn and winter. This year both returned, now they stop by several times a day and even doze close to the feed and water bowl for 2-3 hours after they helped themself to both. The Drake is so bold he sits directly in front of my door and I have to gently nudge him aside with my foot to make him move (if I do that with bare feet he nips at my toes) if I want to get out of the door.

@@BackyardBirdsUS I think something got a duckling upon its hatching. The mother duck was making very loud sounds late at night, when I went out to check the nest, I saw most of the ducklings has hatched, still wet, but the mother was not in sight. Not knowing if the mother will be back, I checked the ducklings every hour, and got a chance to see them close up. What a sweet look, the eyes just melted my heart. The mother finally returned in the morning, completed with hatching the last egg, and took her babies on the road in the early afternoon. Maybe a predator attacked the nest, the mother was defeated and hopelessly fled, then she came back to find her ducklings, so she doesn’t want to take chance on staying. I did escort them to the water source, fend off a crowd and a male Mallard trampled on the ducklings to attack the mother. Hope they will have a safe and joyful life.

One day I had two little ducks come in my yard. They were just babies, they looked like little walking fluff balls in my yard. Which one thing that I was worried about was that they didn’t have a mother duck with them! So, I went to catch them but when I’d get them in the net they’d just go straight through the holes in the net so I just went to get a butterfly net and I got them! Then, we put them in a dog cage so they didn’t get out and then when the two ducks grew out of the cage we let them go and try and fly and they flew around the house a couple times then they landed so then we built a coop connected to our chicken coop so they had more space to walk around then we bought a kiddy pool so they could swim. Then, we let them go again and then they left for a day and then they came back and so we know they’d come back every summer we put out a pool. 2021-2023 They might come back for more years.

Probably on water where they feel safe. But I'm not positive.

A friend & I were driving through Missouri one time and saw a bunch of ducks (with other water fowl) flying in a funnel motion like a tornado. What was that??

hey jeff its me the person that thought they had a wheatear well sorta funny story to tell you so as im typing this I just had a few minutes ago my hand out my window feeding birds and here comes the ''wheatear'' sits on the roof and dives down to my hands and EATS FROM ME then as I looked at it It is not a wheatear its a non-breeding female golfinch then it took off came back with another one and both landed right under my hand I tried to see if it would come to me again but it didn't so just thought I would share that with you lol.

Thats a great story. And a learning experience. Now you know you didn't have a wheatear! lol I love goldfinches and they sure look different in the winter than in the summer. Most people think the winter ones aren't goldfinches at all. I love bird feeding because we always are learning new things. I just saw a bird that had me confused. It was orange. Turned out it was an orange variation of a red house finch!
