How do you get it to auto number each page sequentially?

This doesn't do what I want. The table is a frequency sort of words. I want to number the left column which will be the frequency. I want to be able to sort on some other column without the numbers changing. It doesn't work that way. If "katie" is number 4 in the original table, I want it to stay 4 because that's its frequency. but when I sort the table, "katie" becomes sequential row 10 even though it's frequency 4. I tried copy and paste special with unformatted text but that doesn't help. any ideas? oh, yeah: there are 5000 rows in the table.

How can I ascending (sort) a automatic numbering multiple column table in MS word ?

Regrettably, there seems to be no way to delete the obnoxious tab character after the automatically entered number. The only useful (if slightly tedious) alternative I devised for this is to start a new blank Excel worksheet, type your starting number in the first cell, type your next number (or character) in the second cell to establish a pattern, then select *both* cells that you entered values in and drag the little + icon that appears in the bottom right corner of the lower cell down through as many rows as you need to number in your Word document, and Excel will autopopulate the entire selected group of cells in that column with your desired sequence of numbers (or characters). Now press CTRL + C to copy the sequence, go back to your table column in Word, click in the first cell you want numbered and type CTRL + V to paste. Voilá. Format to taste. The downside is that adding/deleting/inserting rows will NOT auto renumber the remaining cells, so this trick might not work for you. Or you can just make the same changes in Excel and then only paste at the end of your work.
