Great video for categorizing, but isn't the most important part of this how to sum the categories so you see the amount of money spent on each category? Did I miss something? How do I see the total for each category?

What if transaction desciption is not perfectly match ?? xlook fails to identify if there is minor difference in transaction description. Kindly make vid for the same

Great video. How would you tackle the problem of say assigning different expense categories to say one vendor, Target for example? I buy a lot of stuff there but it doesn't all fall under just one category. I manually input the category I wish into another column (tried both in the query table and outside of it) but when I refresh data to include my next month's statements, the previously manually inputted expense category changes, ie it moves to a different spot in the table. Thank you for the comment @jazflyer. Do you have some sample data you’re comfortable sharing in a file in this comment? My suspicion is that you cannot identify the specific items purchased in a given transaction so the onus is on you to create a second category for target purchases.

@@HowToAnalyst Aloha Pete. I can provide you with some sample data but allow me to explain my situation. I have created a budget with around 50 different categories. As I said in the previous post, I shop quite a bit at target but items purchased there, as well as items from other stores for that matter, fall into different categories. I use Power Query to aggregate my CC data into a table as you have described in your videos. I added an extra column for my own category and I manually add that to the table. All works fine until I refresh the data in the Power Query table. The previously entered categories are no longer on the same row as they were previously. I guess the best way to show you this is to upload a video to YT and provide the link. I'll need just a bit to get that done. Thanks again and maybe some of your other subscribers might find it useful too.

Thank you for this video Pete -I am a complete novice but I am trying to manage my expenses. With your video, I was able to get the help and set up the spreadsheet. However, when I posted the new data as you have shown at 4.08 in the video, the Xlookup only returned Null even when some of the expenses were categorized in the lookup_table earlier. Any thoughts on what I did wrong?

Did they return Null or NA? If you’re certain that the expenses have been categorized in the lookup table then maybe your lookup and return range need to be updated? If you added new data outside of the original range you selected that would cause problems.

this works first time only but every month it never works when I try to add the new files and I have to rebuild the whole thing from scratch agin. every month its something diffrent. This month one file has doubled all the trasnaction and the other file does not load :( I have to build it again :( why does it do this? I have no Idea about power query. I just compy the insturction from the vid

Hello, This is exactly what I was looking for, however I cannot get excel to accept the formula you have here - the #ALL is problematic etc. Can you tell me what might be incorrect in my data that your formula will not work? I have several categories and 107 lines of transactions.

Either you're using the formula incorrectly or you have an old version that doesn't support the formula. Try going to data -> remove duplicates, also works

Wont work for thousands of transactions. You need a wildcard method especially if you're going to combine data from multiple credit cards.
