Great video! Just what I needed as I am writing my first history paper. I will definitely check out the Plagiarism Detector and yes, would LOVE a video about how you do your research when writing papers. Thanks so much for all your helpful videos!

Everything that we write, which includes analysis, is a summary or a paraphrase of everything we have read. So, to avoid plagiarism CITE EACH SENTENCE! The rules on plagiarism is ridiculous. There are a lot of topics in Covid-19, Climate Justice or International Criminal Law on Complementarity principle. Yet, the writers are not charged with plagiarism even if what they have written were merely summaries or paraphrases taken from other similar works. Rule of thumb: Each SENTENCE must be cited!

Thanks for doing this vid. Many students need help with avoiding plagiarism because there is a lack of understanding of what it is and why its important to avoid. There are also cultural perspectives that complicate this issue.

Thank you so much for sharing. The only question that I have is that if an outline was a graded assignment and is later requested to supplement the final research paper (both are related to each other), does copying and pasting that information constitute plagiarism?

Great video, cute girl :) Psych NP doctoral student here. Cite as you write is great, and I do almost everything that way. My grad work often includes discussion posts with "support your views from the readings." Clue #1 for me to start by writing a references list with the readings included, and just delete any reference I don't wind up using. Sometimes I even spend some time at the beginning of the semester drafting a references list for every chapter in the textbooks so I can just cut/paste later. Another hazard of plagiarism... beware of group work and check your colleagues as well. I got dinged once because a colleague did a direct cut/paste and cited with page number, but no quotes. The entire group got a disciplinary letter from the school. Lately if I feel like I'm too close to the original text (unavoidable sometimes, especially with jargon) I cite the page number in my parenthetical reference, even if I didn't use quotes. That's not appropriate for every single reference though, as some people try in order to cover themselves. The trouble I have with cite as you write on a long paper is I sometimes get tunnel vision and get off track or directly contradict myself in different parts of the paper. I always proofread multiple times for continuity. One thing I've found... if you know your APA well, often you know it better than the teacher, who has had to keep up with multiple versions ;) Follow Chelsea's "Author, date, title, source" format and the profs don't have time to sweat the minutia unless their specific purpose is to teach you APA.
