My 3 year old grandson has figured out how to get his tricycle on the fireplace ledge and ride across the hearth which is 7’x2’. Fireplace was built in 1905 and has a cover blocking the hole. So you made it easy for me to make a bench out of this 117 year old non functional hearth. Thank you for being so helpful

There are a handful of not outdoors stuff on here, and after my wife showed me so many Pinterest photos with no detail, I figured this was needed. Lol.

I have a 1 year old do you put a gate too or just that.. has the baby gone near the fire when you use it?

We haven’t used the fire place while this bench has been in place. Because its not fire resistant, I’m concerned any ash and embers might burn it or catch it on fire. That being said, our son climbs up and sits on it now at 2. It took some time but he has learned he isn’t allowed to stand up there. This has definitely prevent a few scrapes and bruises

A question. I am trying to build something similar, but mine will go all the way back without a gap. My question is.....How can I secure my new hearth cover down to the hearth without it being pulled off or wobbling? any ideas?

You could fasten it down somehow, but it’ll probably leave some holes if you ever remove it. The tolerances on mine are so tight that it’s hard to remove. My son is 2 now and hasn’t been able to move it at all

@@MaryLouLord1 I would fasten a 90 degree bracket/ brackets at the back side of the board on the bottom. Get some that are about 1/4 longer than your board+padding+material so they "peak out" just above your finished setup. Then place your pad on hearth and mark your holes. Remove pad and drill holes slightly smaller than the screws you intend to use. Reposition pad and install your screws and viola, pad secured. Now personally I went with decorative brass brackets and hardware, but your project may call for a different finish. When you're done it will look like you intended the brackets to be visible and a lovely touch. You could always go longer with your bracket as well. Look for decorative shelving brackets. Good luck! Edit: regarding holes. If you have brick drill in the grout and then patch holes with grout of sand color when removed one day. Or collect the dust from when you're drilling and keep in baggy. Then add a clear glue and fill holes with it at a later date. With wood, just use a paint- able filler for holes.

Can you be a little more specific on how to cut the wood for us people who aren’t familiar with that aspect? (Im a quilter:)

There are several ways you can come up with a “box” for this. The important thing is you case in the Hearth and you account for your final size when cutting foam and cloth. For my specific case I need 66.5” long piece that was 10” wide for the top sitting portion. The other 3 pieces are just to box it in. The 66.5”x3” piece hangs off the front end while the 10”x3.5” buts up on the sides. The reason the side is 0.5” bigger is to account for the 0.5” plywood overlap I have going on the side. In the end the over hang i have on all 3 sides matches up even all the way around.
