Thank you so much, I checked several videos and I almost gave up and decided to return the WD 14T external hard drive. I am so happy I found your channel. I haven't done the backup yet, because the cable didn't come with the package to connect it to the computer, and the slot to plug in the hard drive is different from what I Knew so far. I may have to take the hard drive to a computer store to buy the cable, but I don't think I will have a problem doing it. I wish you showed us when you back up your files. You have the gift or the talent to teach.

Hands down the best explanation on here. I do have a question though... Every step I was able to follow, except for the manual backup. When I click 'Back up now', I get the loading circle and 'backing up your data', but that lasts only for five seconds before it stops. It says that the backup has been done, but the data file is empty. There is more than enough free space, so that shouldn't be an issue... Is the backup not working because I already have some files saved on the drive?

A few questions: 1) Having the back up run once every hour presumably means keeping the external hard drive attached to the computer. This would allow a virus or malware that's compromised the computer to also compromise the back up, no? Can the back up be done with more manual input? Ie, plug in the eternal hdd, run the back up, unplug the hdd. Rinse and repeat when desired. 2) I am confused with how the backups are saved and how that works with how long they're kept. Is it 1 back up file that gets updated only enough to match the changes that are made to the files on the system? Is it a new back up file each run but only contains the changes from the last backup file? Or am I thinking of it wrong and it isn't one packaged backup file but all the individual files copied over piecemeal? And how does that work with... 3) The "keep for" time given to the backup(s). If I back up old photos which aren't modified for a year I still don't want them forgotten about or deleted from a backup.

That's a very clear tutorial, one question just to be sure: If backup files are deleted after 1 year, what happens with files on the computer that have not been opened or edited for more that 1 year period? I assume the latest copy on the computer remains abcked up? The back up will keep the latest copy irrespective of how long since it was opened or edited? I ask because I have many files that I need to keep but will not be modifying or may not open in any 1 year period. Thanks
@CloudNexus
3 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely correct. The backup will retain the latest version of any file so if it hasn't been opened/altered for a year or more, it will simply keep a copy of the original file. If for any reason, the BACKUP version of that file is deleted, it would simply take another copy of the file from the computer when the scheduled backup runs again.

Great video, well explained. What happens if your laptop and the external hard drive are stolen? My initial thought was that my one drive would be the offsite backup but if the thief then deletes the files off the stolen laptop would it wipe the files from one drive?
@CloudNexus
2 жыл бұрын
Depending on how they wiped the computer then yes there is a risk they could delete the files from OneDrive as well. BUT, OneDrive has a 30 day recycle bin which the thief wouldn't have access to as it's online. You would be able to login to the OneDrive online and restore any deleted files from the recycle bin.

I hope you are answering questions. My computer has a very small hard drive that is now in the red zone. I like the idea of a hard drive and backing up all my files. Thank you for clearly explaining that. Now once I have my files backed up can I just add new files to the folders in the external drive instead of having them in both places since I don't have much storage left on my computer hard drive? Or can I delete a copy of big folders I have and just keep them in the external drive, to free up space in my computer hard drive? Hope those questions make sense.

Great video and one of few that answer the questions in comments.. thanks for that... I have a few myself if you could, as i have always had problems getting my head around backups. 1. Before backing up my laptop to portable drive i just bought, is there an easy quick way to delete all duplicate files.. every time i have added programs to try this.. It's a one by one lengthy process which i still arnt sure of so i don't try. 2. re ONEDRIVE.(another nightmare for me), is there a way i can backup all my onedrive folders/files onto a section of the portable harddrive by itself.. like make a folder on the portable hardrive just for onedrive? 3. I want to backup my full 1TB laptop to the portable drive, but because its so full and slowing the laptop down, i only want to put back on certain folders/files plus the onedrive.. i don't want to clutter up.. What i ideally want to do is start with my laptop being formatted and empty again.. and from the backup just pull across the folders i like..... Is that as easy as it sounds.. can i just go into my new backup drive and drag or copy somehow just the things i need. 4. What about things like my favourites on my browsers.. how do i go about not losing those... and is there anything else that isn't folders/files that i need to think about ( i know i have to back my emails up etc). Sorry about all the questions appreciate if you could give me some advice.. cheers

Question, what if I’m moving all my files to a new laptop with this method? I will want to delete everything off the old laptop, including OneDrive from my File Explorer, or will that go away if I sign out from it?
@CloudNexus
3 жыл бұрын
Thats cool - you can use this as a backup method to migrate files between computers. Once you've run the backup, the easiest way to remove your documents (let's say you're selling the laptop) would be to use the "Reset this PC" option in Windows 10. Start that process and choose "Remove Everything" which will delete all files, apps and settings. If you just log out of OneDrive, it doesn't remove the OneDrive folder or the contents from your User Profile. All those items will still be on the laptop hard disk.

Hey James, Unfortunately not. The Backup experience is a bit different in Windows 11 (and it's not as good) - We've made a video on this here *kzitem.info/news/bejne/tWmkrXysrpyIgHY**.* You should be fine to buy a 1TB drive for your machine. Because of the way the backup works, it only takes incremental backups of any changes. It doesn't make a full backup everytime it runs. You should be all set with a 1TB drive.
@myoption100

I bought a back up drive years ago called Rebit that stayed connected to your PC and imaged your PC, no fussing around pure and simple then there was clickfree another simple external hard drive that too was amazing, now Rebit does not offer these drives anymore but a subscription service and clickfree went out of business. I am bad as I don't backup my PC and frankly I just gave up as I dont see these old classic 1 touch backups any more as I assume they were losing money. Now seeing these new backup drives my question will it image your exact pc if craps hit the fan? With a new hard drive or PC will these Seagate/WD backup hard drives be your same PC? desktop icons etc. Thank you.
@CloudNexus
2 жыл бұрын
Hiya - ah yes, I know of Rebit. I don't think I ever used it but I get the idea. The function here of the Windows Backup really isn't the same, it's all about backing up the files and not really providing a one-touch backup of the entire machine. In Windows 10, it is very simple and will just run in the background backing up your files but it won't let you restore the entire machine if it breaks. There IS an option inside Windows 10 to do a full machine backup which it calls "Windows 7 style backup" but it's not ideal. A lot of comments we get on here point to Aomei BackUpper which give you options to do - the entire machine OR a single drive OR a selection of files. Many good comments coming through on how easy it is to use so that might be worth a look? We are considering it for a review on here too!
