Apple made these forced storage alternatives a staple…unfortunately, I find that a lot of other companies are moving toward the same models. Granted the others were free services to begin with…but some email clients used to offer 2x or 3x the storage…and recently stripped those higher limits. Google has remained pretty consistent, but being that all of their services such as Drive, Photos, Emails, etc. are all tied together…I’ve recently hit my cap and have to keep going back in and deleting all unwanted emails, and unsubscribing…but I still continue to get regular emails filling up the inbox. I hit the cap on my outlook as well, because I believe they reduced the storage capacity to about 1/2 of what it was before. Both companies offer you the ability to either purchase more space, or delete a sufficient amount of data. It become monotonous. I think I’m going to get Thunderbird, which is supposed to be pretty good at managing, auto-deleting unwanted emails, and unsubscribing effectively…you generate the preferred settings.

There is no folder called MobileSync or Backup in my Application Support folder. I have a new Mac Studio. Also, I am yet to find a method of backing up my iPhone to an external drive using my Mac. Image Capture does not work, it crashes every time! Photos does not work, it crashes everytime! I have over 40,000 photos/videos on my iPhone 11 Pro Max and all I want to do is back everything up to make it impossible to lose all these valuable photos/videos of my children. Why is such a simple everyday task so impossible? If you have a solution to transfer ALL photos/videos to an external hard drive using a Mac with iPhone connected to a mac i would love to hear it. I gave up trying to use Image Capture and Photos because they always CRASH! I have wasted so much time trying to do this task.

Is is normal that iTunes still says "last backup on this Mac: never". I did it in the night and didn't read any message in the morning. The backup folder is 278 gb which is realistic for my iPhone backup but iTunes shows that my iPhone is 511,98 GB and 175,73GB is available. Doing the math the backup should be 336 GB and not 278...

Help! I am having a rare problem, and is that the HDD keeps ejecting improperly when almost finishing the backup. I thought it was the drive (My Passport For Mac 2TB) and decided to buy another one (same model) along with a straight USB Micro B to USB-C cable from AmazonBasics to not use the multiport (Anker 5-1) since I used it to charge the Macbook and iPhone for the transfer. I have tried many settings such: - Disksleep set to 0 via Terminal - Toggle On the “Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off” - Toggle off the “Put Hard disks to sleep when possible - “Turn display off on battery when inactive“ set to Never as well as “Turn display off on power adapter when inactive” - Also checked in the WD Drive utilities and set the Sleep timer of the HDD to off Note: Both the Macbook Air and the iPhone are both on the latest versions available in the moment: Sonoma 14.2.1 and IOS 17.2.1 I would greatly appreciate if anybody could help with this problem, thanks!

Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question here. After I have done all steps including allowing access to Terminal, it still say I cannot backup iPhone because Mac has not enough space. Would you have any idea why? Thank you

very clear tutorial, but unfortunately it doesn't work for me. i granted terminal the access to all folders but when i do as you told terminal tells me: ln: illegal option -- / usage: ln [-s [-F] | -L | -P] [-f | -i] [-hnv] source_file [target_file] ln [-s [-F] | -L | -P] [-f | -i] [-hnv] source_file ... target_dir link source_file target_file any ideas how to solve this?

Loved this and seemed to work but now how do I set my new phone up from this backup? Can see the mobile sync “Backup” folder with the arrow, I click on it and it goes to my hard drive Backup folder and I can see the backup backup I made….But in finder when I click on my phone it says last backup never but if I click manage backups I can see it. So no option to “restore backup” please help, I know I have the backup on my hard drive.

I followed the instructions carefully and everything seemed to work with the folder linking to my external hard drive. However, when I tried to back up my iPhone it says I don't have enough space on my Mac (I've checked my external hard drive and have plenty of space) I'm confused. Does anyone know where I'm going wrong please? Thanks in advance

I can’t create a folder in my external hard drive and I can’t figure out why. I partitioned my external drive thinking I couldn’t create a folder in the same partition where my Mac iOS backup resided, but that didn’t work. Spend a lot of time time spinning my wheels.

Hi Arthur, I followed your steps perfectly and created the link to a Backup folder on my 2TB external HDD. When I attempt to sync my iPhone and back up iTunes still tells me there is not enough space on my Mac to perform a back up… why is this the case if I have mapped it correctly to my 2TB WD HDD?

it appears I have deleted the original "mobile sync" folder in the application support a while back, I just want to backup my iPhone to the external HD and it is creating a conflict. I did the ln -s to a newly created backup folder but when I press sync, it is still trying to back it up to the Mac. Any solutions for this ?
